Abstract

This article explores two major approaches in understanding Islamic religious texts: the textual (literalist) approach and the contextual (interpretive) approach, and their implications for contemporary Muslim life. The textual approach emphasizes a literal reading of the Qur’an and Hadith, while the contextual approach takes into account historical, social, and maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah considerations. Using a qualitative library research method, this study examines selected verses and hadiths interpreted through both lenses and proposes an integrative (wasatiyyah) approach to address contemporary challenges without compromising Islam’s normative foundations. The findings reveal that synthesizing both approaches provides an understanding that is both authoritative and socially relevant.

Abstract

This study investigates the historical, theological, and socio-political differences between Sunni and Shia Islam. By examining core issues such as leadership, understanding of the Prophet's companions, and interpretation of the Quran, the study highlights the complex factors that contribute to sectarian divisions. The paper then explores the potential for harmonization between the two sects, focusing on the importance of interfaith dialogue, education, and community-building initiatives. Although Sunnis and Shias share a common foundation in Islamic belief, their differing perspectives on key doctrinal and historical issues have caused sectarian tensions for centuries. The study argues that by fostering mutual understanding, promoting tolerance, and addressing the underlying political and social factors, sectarian conflict can be reduced and bridges can be built between Sunni and Shia communities. The paper concludes by emphasizing the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation in achieving lasting peace and harmony in the Muslim world.

Abstract

This study aims to explore models of the relationship between religion and the state in the Indonesian context by examining the thoughts of two prominent moderate Muslim intellectuals: Nurcholish Madjid and Abdurrahman Wahid. Utilizing a qualitative method through library research and content analysis, this study analyzes academic literature, ideological interpretations, and the socio-political historical context of Indonesia. The findings reveal three prevailing approaches: the integralistic, the secularistic, and the ethical-substantive model. Both Madjid and Wahid advocate for the ethical-substantive approach, which promotes justice, freedom, and deliberation within a democratic framework, without turning religion into a state ideology. The study concludes that their moderate perspectives are highly relevant for maintaining a balance between religious spirituality and state rationality in a pluralistic society. It is recommended that this ethical-substantive approach be adopted in public policy formulation and inclusive civic education in Indonesia.
