Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of family gathering as a scientific approach to parenting education in improving parenting styles and social behavior among children with intellectual disabilities at SLB Lentera Bunda, Solok. Using a mixed-method design with a one-group pretest-posttest model, the research involved 10 children and 9 parents who participated in two structured family gathering sessions integrating recreational and educational elements. Quantitative data were collected through observation checklists measuring 21 indicators of social behavior, while qualitative data were gathered via in-depth interviews and field documentation. Results showed a significant increase in children’s average social behavior score from 12.4 (pretest) to 14.3 (posttest), confirmed by a paired t-test (p = 0.001). Thematic analysis revealed a shift in parenting styles from authoritarian to democratic, with parents reporting improved communication, emotional regulation, and collaborative decision-making. The activity fostered a supportive environment for experiential learning, strengthened parent-child interaction, and enhanced social skills in children. Findings confirm that family gathering, when designed educationally, functions as a valid psychosocial intervention. It is recommended as a structured program in special education settings to promote holistic development through family-school collaboration.

Abstract

Functional speech delays affect children's communication skills, necessitating appropriate language intervention. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of reading aloud in improving the speech skills of children with speech delays. A qualitative case study approach was used, involving five children at the Rumah TIA Special Needs School in Sawahlunto City. The intervention was delivered over four weeks, three times per week, with structured sessions tailored to each child's needs. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed thematically. The results showed increases in vocabulary mastery, pronunciation accuracy, and verbal participation following the intervention. All participants showed positive development, with variations influenced by age and initial conditions. These findings indicate that reading aloud is an effective and practical language intervention strategy. This activity is recommended for routine implementation in schools and homes as a fun method of language stimulation to support children's communication development. Abstract

This research was based on the low ability to order numbers 1–10 in a third-grade student with mild intellectual disability (initials AMA) at SLB Kasih Ummi Padang. In the initial assessment, the student scored only 33.33% in the "Needs Guidance" category, despite reaching 100% in writing and naming numbers. This study aimed to demonstrate the effectiveness of number rods in improving the student's ability to order numbers 1–10. Using a quantitative approach, the study employed a Single Subject Research (SSR) method with an A-B-A design. Data were collected through performance tests and analyzed using visual analysis techniques via graphs, covering both baseline and inter-condition analysis. Inter-condition analysis revealed a low overlap percentage: 16.67% between phases A1 and B, and 50% between phases B and A2, indicating a significant intervention effect on improving the number-ordering ability. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that number rods are effective in improving the ability to order numbers 1–10. This media can also serve as an alternative concrete learning tool, particularly for children with visual and tactile-manipulative learning styles.
