Abstract

The article is the result of a research about mythos of a song Durma Kuntilanak in the film Kuntilanak byRizal Mantovani. Problem in the article is how film Kuntilanak describes about mythos of tembang DurmaKuntilanak. The research aims to learn the reality of film Kuntilanak that represents the song Durma Kuntilanakas a mythos created by the film maker. To analyze the sign and meaning in order to find understanding anddescription of the mythos in the story of film Kuntilanak, the research uses the semiotics approach ofChristian Metz. Metz said that the cinematographic indicator and sign have a “motivation” and “reasonable”relationship. It means that indicator and sign in cinematographic will always be diegesis with the referrednature (story). The paradigm will be applied in narrative structure of film Kuntilanak that has been divided intothree sessions and then classified to be sequences covering “cause-effect”. The result shows that themethod of storytelling in film Kuntilanak uses narrative conventional structure and “cause-effect” sceneswhen the song Durma Kuntilanak is presented by the repeated pattern. It makes the audience leaded to theunderstanding of story in accordance to “its path” and believed the mythos of song Durma Kuntilanak bystressing the “cause-effect” scene. Even though the “cause-effect” scene is presented by using symbolicpictures, the connotative signs in the symbolic pictures are no more arbitrary because of the narrativestructure used in the film. As if the audience is leaded to understand easily the meaning of story in accordanceto the presented pictures. The connotative sign can be no more given a meaning deliberately. Keywords: mythos of song Durma Kuntilanak, narrative conventional structure, semiotics of film Christian Metz

Abstract

This study discusses the design of a short film titled Nggabrul as one of the media used as therapy for primary school children. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused parents to worry about their children's education and eventually help them do their homework. The purpose of this design is to produce a film with a cinematic therapy approach by taking the theme of current life phenomena. Cinema therapy can be said to be the use of movies or watching activities to manage medical health, mental health, and life management. The design method used refers to the stages of creative design proposed by Graham Wallas, consisting of (a) preparation, (b) incubation, (c) illumination, and (d) verification. The result is a simple storytelling package. With the choice of angles of the online learning process in the era of COVID-19 as well as the proper cinematographic techniques, the Nggabrul film becomes one of the right therapeutic media for children to face the new normal era and provide moral teachings of honesty. The results of this design are expected to inspire the filmmaker to produce films that respond to the latest phenomena in society. Abstract

Korean serial drama Extraordinary Attorney Woo achieved high popularity following its release on Netflix mid-year 2022. This drama does not only present relevant social issues but also offers captivating visual arrangements depicting emotions for the main character, who has asperger syndrome or autism. This study focuses on cinematographic patterns in romanticizing scenes to project thoughts and emotional expressions of the main character. From the total sixteen episodes, several scenes were selected through purposive sampling to demonstrate repetitive cinematic structures. Analysis was conducted using David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson’s developed theory of cinematography, encompassing three primary aspects: The Photographic Images, Framing and Duration of the Image. The aim of this study is to identify the visual patterns used in romanticizing those scenes, and how these visual arrangements build emotional engagement and deep understanding between viewers and Woo Young Woo as an individual with autism. This study is expected to enrich insights about visual construction within serials and films, particularly in potraying autistic characters through cinematography.

Abstract

The Inner Conflict of the Elderly in the Aftermath of Spousal Death: A Creative Foundation for the Screenplay KarThis creation study originates from the author's empirical experience of witnessing his grandmother's inner turmoil following the sudden loss of her husband, which is related to the phenomena of late-life crisis and grief dream. The film scenario was developed using an empirical approach (through observation and interviews), which was then processed using Robert McKee's miniplot narrative structure. Sartre's existentialist theory (the concept of the Other) and the aesthetic approach of magical realism are integrated to build character conflict and depth. The results of this creative research demonstrate that the empirical experiences of grieving elderly individuals can be effectively crafted into a meaningful cinematic narrative, representing emotional complexity, the search for meaning, and the process of psychological healing in the elderly. The screenplay Kar not only serves as a personal reflection but also offers a new perspective on the importance of social support and the redefinition of self-identity for the elderly after the loss of a life partner.
