Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model integrated with Malay Riau culture in enhancing students’ understanding of natural resources (NR) material. The background of this research is based on the importance of introducing the concept of natural resources in a contextual and meaningful way from an early stage of education, considering that textual learning without connection to local realities often makes it difficult for students to grasp the material. PBL offers a student-centered approach by engaging learners with real-world problems, encouraging collaborative solution-seeking, and prompting reflection, thereby fostering active participation and critical thingking. This study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of Student Worksheets (LKPD) and qualitative data obtained through observations and open-ended interviews with students. The research subjects were 32 fifth-grade students at SDN 111 Pekanbaru. The learning scenario raised local environmental issues linked to cultural values of the Malay community, such as gotong royong (mutual cooperation) and musyawarah (deliberation). The data show that 87.5% of students achieved scores above the Minimum Competency Criteria (KKM), with an average class score of 82.6. Observations also revealed active student engagement in group discussions, the use of local terms when expressing ideas, and the ability to propose culturally and environmentally relevant solutions.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the differences in teaching styles between senior teachers and young teachers in responding to the demands of modern learning in elementary schools. The rapid development of technology and changes in educational paradigms require teachers to implement effective, innovative, and student-centered learning practices. This study aimed to analyze the differences and strengths of the teaching styles of senior and young teachers in creating effective learning environments at SD Negeri 013 Kepenuhan. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through observations, interviews, and documentation. The participants consisted of senior and young teachers who actively participated in the teaching and learning process. The findings revealed that senior teachers tend to emphasize classroom management, learning discipline, and the use of teaching experiences accumulated over many years. Meanwhile, young teachers are more likely to utilize digital technology, interactive learning media, and innovative teaching methods that encourage student engagement. Despite these differences, both groups demonstrated complementary strengths in supporting effective learning. Senior teachers contributed stability, pedagogical wisdom, and classroom experience, whereas young teachers brought creativity, technological adaptability, and innovation. Therefore, collaboration between senior and young teachers is essential to create a balanced learning environment that integrates experience and innovation to improve the quality of education in the modern era.
