Abstract

This study aims to explore Mohammed Arkoun's thought on the critique of reason and the dimension of historicity as the foundation of modern Islamic philosophy. Arkoun perceives that contemporary Islamic thought is trapped in a "dogmatic reason" that closes the space for new ijtihad. Using a qualitative-descriptive method through literature review, this article analyzes the three main pillars of Arkoun's methodology: deconstruction, the critique of Islamic reason (Critique de la raison islamique), and applied Islamology. The results show that Arkoun's critique of "the unthought" (l'impensé) and "the unthinkable" (l’impen-sable) successfully dismantles orthodoxies considered sacred but are, in fact, historical constructions. By integrating modern social sciences and humanities such as linguistics, semiotics, and anthropology, Arkoun offers a way for Muslims to reconcile tradition (turāth) with modernity. This study concludes that Arkoun's thought is not merely a destructive critique, but an epistemological milestone that allows for the reconstruction of a more inclusive, dynamic, and historical Islamic thought.

Abstract

Religious moderation has become an important discourse in contemporary Islamic studies, particularly in the context of pluralistic societies facing challenges of radicalism, intolerance, and religious polarization. This study aims to analyze the concept of religious moderation from the perspective of Islamic law and examine its application within Islamic education. The study employs a qualitative library research approach by examining various sources related to Islamic teachings, Sharia principles, moderation theory, and educational practices. The findings reveal that religious moderation in Islam is deeply rooted in the concept of wasathiyah, which emphasizes balance, justice, tolerance, equality, and consultation. These values are reflected in the principles of tawassuth, tasamuh, i’tidal, tawazun, musawah, and syura, all of which form the foundation of a moderate Islamic worldview. In the perspective of Sharia and Islamic law, moderation is manifested through flexibility, contextual legal reasoning, and the orientation toward public welfare (maslahah) and justice. The study also shows that the implementation of moderation in Islamic education can be carried out through curriculum development, dialogical learning methods, character education, and the creation of inclusive educational environments. However, the application of religious moderation continues to face challenges such as radicalism, weak religious literacy, politicization of religion, and misconceptions regarding moderation itself. Therefore, strengthening moderation through education is essential in developing Muslims who are faithful, tolerant, inclusive, and capable of contributing to social harmony and peaceful coexistence in multicultural societies.

Abstract

Religious moderation is a fundamental principle in Islam that emphasizes balance (tawazun), justice (i'tidal), tolerance (tasamuh), and the middle path (tawassuth) in religious life. This article aims to analyze the concept of religious moderation from the perspective of Islamic law and examine its implications for Islamic education. This study employed a qualitative approach using a library research method by reviewing primary and secondary sources, including the Qur’an, Hadith, classical and contemporary Islamic legal literature, academic journals, and official documents related to religious moderation. Data were analyzed using content analysis to identify key concepts, principles, and educational implications of religious moderation. The findings reveal that religious moderation is an integral part of Islamic law, reflected in the objectives of Sharia (maqashid al-shari'ah), the principles of justice, tolerance, consultation, equality, and legal flexibility. In the context of Islamic education, religious moderation can be implemented through curriculum development, inclusive learning approaches, and the creation of a tolerant and dialogical educational environment. However, religious moderation has clear normative boundaries and does not imply compromising core Islamic beliefs, including the principles of tawhid, Sharia, and Islamic morality. Therefore, religious moderation serves as a strategic framework for strengthening social harmony, preventing religious extremism, and fostering an inclusive and peaceful Islamic civilization.

Abstract

This research investigates the semantic complexities of Mubham al-Dalalah to determine its influence on the interpretative process of religious scriptures. It aims to explain how textual ambiguity functions within Islamic legal interpretation and contributes to maintaining legal flexibility across different temporal and social contexts. The study employs a qualitative library research methodology grounded in semantic-hermeneutic principles. Classical Usul al-Fiqh literature is integrated with modern linguistic theories, with classical treatises serving as the primary data source for analyzing four levels of semantic ambiguity. The findings classify semantic ambiguity into four categories: Khafi, Mushkil, Mujmal, and Mutashabih, each requiring a distinct level of interpretative rigor. The study demonstrates that semantic analysis transforms ambiguity from a linguistic obstacle into an opportunity for ijtihad, while contextual considerations are essential for selecting appropriate meanings consistent with divine intent and justice. Furthermore, integrating classical Islamic scholarship with contemporary linguistic approaches produces a more comprehensive understanding of religious texts. The study provides a theoretical framework for strengthening contemporary Islamic legal interpretation by combining classical Usul al-Fiqh with modern semantic analysis. It offers guidance for scholars and jurists in addressing contemporary legal and social issues while preserving fidelity to Islamic textual principles, thereby enhancing the relevance of religious interpretation in increasingly pluralistic and globalized societies. The originality of this study lies in its integration of classical Islamic semantic theory (Mubham al-Dalalah) with modern linguistic and hermeneutic approaches. By systematically conceptualizing the four hierarchical levels of semantic ambiguity within a contemporary interpretative framework, the research provides a novel analytical model that bridges traditional Islamic jurisprudence and modern linguistic scholarship.
