Abstract

This paper aims to examine a range of semiotic modes used in Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (CRP) by two English language teachers in teaching young EFL learners in Lhokseumawe, Aceh, Indonesia. It evaluated the contributing factors in applying the diverse modes, drew the implications, and proposed practical solutions for effectively integrating CRP within an Indonesian primary school setting. Data were gathered through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews. The observations focused on one fifth-grade and one sixth-grade classroom, supplemented by approximately four hours of audio-recorded classroom observations. The findings revealed the dominant inhibiting factors in incorporating multimodal literacy into the presentation of CRP. The significant issue was a lack of teachers’ skills and knowledge to adopt various modes that engage with young learners. The use of multimodal texts, such as images and gestures, remained limited, with a predominant reliance on traditional text-based methods and endorsed textbooks. Furthermore, the teachers struggled to connect CRP with students’ real-life experiences, which is essential for promoting engagement and understanding. Consequently, when teachers failed to leverage the unique characteristics of young students, the learning environment was often tedious and stressful for both teachers and learners. The study emphasizes the need for targeted professional development to enhance teachers’ knowledge and skills in multimodal literacies, facilitating more effective CRP delivery to young learners. The implications and practical solutions to these challenges are thoroughly discussed, highlighting the significance of adapting teaching practices by teachers to meet the needs of young EFL learners.

Abstract

This community service program is entitled Mentoring of FKIP Student Teaching Practices as an Effort to Improve the Quality of the Learning Process at MA Ulumuddin. The goal is to strengthen the pedagogic competence of prospective teacher students and improve the quality of the learning process at partner schools. The implementation method is in the form of intensive assistance during Field Experience Practice (PPL) for 5 FKIP students at MA Ulumuddin, from September to December 2025. The mentoring model combines remote consultations via mobile phones, classroom monitoring visits, and rubric-based assessments. The results of the evaluation showed a significant improvement in student competence in preparing lesson plans, implementing interactive teaching strategies, managing classes, and conducting assessments. On the other hand, partner schools benefit in the form of refreshing pedagogical practices in the classroom. This program proves the effectiveness of the university-school partnership model that has a dual impact, namely preparing competent teacher candidates and at the same time contributing to improving the quality of education at the school level. For this reason, replication and institutionalization of this model are highly recommended for sustainability.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the occurrence of language shift in Singkil among children in Danau Bungara Village, Kota Baharu Sub-district, Aceh Singkil Regency. The method used in this study is a qualitative research method conducted to provide an actual description of the occurrence of language shift in Singkil among children in Danau Bungara Village. The data collection techniques used in this study are observation and interviews. The data analysis used includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. This research focuses on three domains: the family domain, the environment domain, the school domain, and the factors that cause the language shift. Based on research findings, it shows that in the family domain, the majority of children use Bahasa Indonesia when interacting with family members such as parents, siblings, and other relatives. In the children's environment, they predominantly use Bahasa Indonesia rather than Singkil, whether they are playing with peers or communicating with those around them. In the school domain, children use Bahasa Indonesia overall. These findings prove that there has been a language shift from Singkil in the family, environment, and school domains. The factors causing the shift from Singkil include school or educational factors, family habits, environmental factors, and parental or children's attitudes towards the Singkil language.
