Abstract

This systematic literature review examines knowledge management (KM) implementation in academic libraries by mapping technology enabled practices and identifying technological and organizational barriers that constrain adoption. Following PRISMA guided procedures, a Scopus based search (2015–2025) retrieved 118 records; after screening against predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, 11 full-text journal articles were included for narrative synthesis. Study quality and contribution were appraised using a relevance-based scoring scheme (1–10) aligned with the review focus (technology use, implementation detail, and barrier reporting). The synthesis indicates that academic libraries operationalize KM primarily through implementation of collaborative technologies, IoT, analytics and data-driven technologies and blockchain technology and digital security systems. Key barriers recur across contexts of infrastructure limitations, limited human resource capacity, limited managerial support and policies, knowledge hoarding, and standardization and technology interoperability. Reported impacts include improved knowledge sharing, stronger service effectiveness, and enhanced support for academic activities. This review consolidates technology categories and barrier mechanisms into an implementation-oriented synthesis and offers actionable implications for library leaders and policymakers to strengthen infrastructure readiness, interoperability planning, governance clarity, and workforce capability development for sustainable KM implementation.

Abstract

This study examines the contribution of tacit knowledge externalization to the preservation of organizational memory and identifies the mechanisms and barriers that emerge within formal organizational contexts. The study applies a systematic literature review method using PRISMA 2020 as the reporting guideline for the literature selection process. Data were analyzed through a narrative synthesis approach to describe key findings from relevant studies. The results indicate that externalization plays a fundamental role in sustaining organizational memory by mitigating knowledge loss, strengthening collective memory, and developing knowledge repositories. Externalization mechanisms are identified in two main categories, consisting of process-based mechanisms and technology-based mechanisms. The most influential barriers to externalization are concentrated in three main clusters, namely cultural, structural, and technological factors, which simultaneously weaken organizational capacity to build and sustain collective memory in contemporary formal organizational settings. Overall, the findings emphasize that externalization depends on readiness to address barriers.

Abstract

Abstract

Plain Language Summaries (PLS) are used to increase the readability and public accessibility of research findings, making them highly relevant within knowledge sharing (KS) practices. This study conducted a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using the Scopus database to identify the roles of PLS in KS and the technologies utilized in their creation. Article selection followed the PRISMA framework, resulting in 24 eligible studies. Data were extracted and synthesized using Microsoft Excel. The findings indicate that PLS play a critical role in simplifying scientific information, enhancing comprehension, expanding dissemination reach, and strengthening user engagement. Additionally, eight categories of technologies were identified, including readability tools, machine learning, large language models, knowledge translation platforms, and multimedia production tools. Overall, PLS serve as a strategic instrument for cross-audience knowledge transfer and require strengthened standards and governance of technological tools to ensure their quality and effectiveness.
