Abstract

This study was motivated by the low speaking skills of children aged 5–6 years in expressing ideas, telling experiences, and using vocabulary coherently during learning activities. This research aimed to develop Storyboard DAB (Daily Activity Board) media and determine its effectiveness in improving the speaking skills of children. This study used the Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE development model, which consists of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The subjects of this research were 25 children in group B at TK Islam Al-Fatah. Data were collected through expert validation sheets, observation, and pretest–posttest assessments. Data analysis was conducted using the Paired Sample t-test and N-Gain test. The results showed that the Storyboard DAB media was feasible to be used in learning activities. The hypothesis test indicated a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000 < 0.05, which means there was a significant difference between the pretest and posttest results. The N-Gain value of 0.0536 indicates that there was an improvement in children's speaking skills, although it was still categorized as low. In conclusion, Storyboard DAB (Daily Activity Board) can be used as an alternative learning media to help improve the speaking skills of children aged 5–6 years.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study examines the effectiveness of counter-linguistic strategies implemented through interactive storytelling to address the imitation of age-inappropriate slang among early childhood students driven by massive digital media exposure. Data gathered through observations, interviews, and documentation reveal that creative narratives featuring polite characters effectively motivate children to adopt correct diction naturally. The two-way interaction inherent in storytelling allows children to clarify the meanings of slang terms encountered on social media, while the repetitive use of positive vocabulary within the narrative helps internalize politeness values without being preachy. The results demonstrate that this strategy successfully reduces slang usage by replacing it with more communicative and polite alternatives. The success of this intervention relies heavily on the teacher's creativity in weaving target vocabulary into engaging plots, leading children to voluntarily switch to more respectful language in their daily interactions, thereby fostering better character development and linguistic etiquette.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the experiences of children, parents, and teachers in early childhood education coloring competitions, as well as the meanings constructed within these practices. The study used a qualitative approach based on narrative inquiry. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis to identify patterns of meaning across participants’ narratives. Data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation conducted during a coloring competition event held in Surabaya. The participants consisted of six children aged 4-6 years, five parents, and three teachers or organizers selected through purposive sampling. Data analysis followed Braun and Clarke’s six phases: familiarization, coding, theme generation, theme review, theme definition and naming, and report writing. The findings indicate that parents’ motivations range from recreational to competitive orientations. Teachers and organizers tend to maintain coloring competitions for practical reasons, while children’s responses range from enthusiasm to pressure. These findings suggest that coloring competitions serve as a social practice that shapes children’s experiences within a competitive value framework. This study offers a critical perspective on art practices in early childhood education. In practice, it suggests reorienting art activities toward more appreciative formats, such as open-ended drawing festivals that allow children to express themselves without competitive pressure.

Abstract

Abstract

Marine environmental awareness in early childhood is essential to fostering lifelong environmental responsibility. This study evaluates the comparative effectiveness of STEAM and scientific approaches on children’s marine awareness, specifically examining the moderating role of critical thinking among second-grade students in West Java, Indonesia. Using a quasi-experimental design with a 2×2 factorial structure, the study involved 51 children aged 7–8 years. Data were collected using the New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) Scale adapted for children and a critical thinking assessment rubric, then analyzed using Two-Way ANOVA. Results confirmed that the STEAM approach significantly outperformed the scientific approach in enhancing marine awareness (F(1, 45)=111.65, p<.001). Crucially, a significant interaction effect (F(2, 45)=3.49, p=.039) revealed that the efficacy of STEAM was amplified in students with higher critical thinking skills (M=136.27) compared to the scientific group (M=112.75). Practically, these findings advocate for shifting early environmental pedagogy from linear scientific inquiry to transdisciplinary STEAM models. Educators are recommended to integrate critical thinking scaffolding within STEAM activities to maximize marine literacy and environmental responsibility in young learners.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of unplugged coding using traditional snack media to develop computational thinking skills in children aged 5-6 years. The lack of integration of local cultural elements in technology education is the primary background of this study. The research method used was a quantitative quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest. Data were analyzed using a paired t-test to assess the significance of differences in children’s abilities before and after treatment. The results showed a significant improvement in decomposition, pattern recognition, and simple algorithmic skills after children interacted with traditional snack media. These findings prove that abstract computational concepts can be taught concretely and contextually through local wisdom. This research contributes to the development of early childhood education by providing an innovative model of digital learning without devices (unplugged) while preserving cultural values. Theoretically, these results strengthen the integration of ethnopedagogy into modern educational curricula and provide a foundation for digital literacy from an early age, without dependence on gadgets.
