Abstract

This study examines phonological and lexical change in Kudangan, a minority language spoken by the Dayak Tomun community in Central Kalimantan, and explores its implications for mother-tongue-based regional language education. Employing a qualitative linguistic approach, data were collected through purposive sampling involving community elders and fluent speakers, semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and lexical elicitation. Phonological analysis was conducted using segmental comparison and rule-based description, while lexical change was analyzed in terms of morphological restructuring and semantic shift. The findings reveal systematic sound correspondences, including vowel modification (e.g., /air/ → /arai/) and final consonant addition (e.g., /hujan/ → /hujant/), alongside patterned lexical variation reflecting sociocultural meaning and language contact. These results demonstrate that Kudangan maintains an internally coherent phonological and lexical system despite pressure from dominant languages. The study offers novel empirical documentation of an under-described Austronesian variety and provides a linguistic foundation for developing culturally responsive teaching materials and sustaining minority language transmission. Accordingly, phonological and lexical description is positioned not only as documentation but also as a strategic resource for regional language education and long-term language maintenance.

Abstract

This literature-based study aims to synthesize theoretical and methodological perspectives on needs analysis (NA) in English as a Foreign Language (EFL), emphasizing the framework of necessities, wants, and lacks (NWL) and its implications for materials development. A total of twenty-five peer-reviewed journal articles (2010-2024), three seminal books, and two policy documents were analyzed through thematic and comparative methods. Sources were selected based on their relevance to EFL contexts, academic credibility, and contribution to materials design. The review reveals three key findings. First, needs analysis serves as a cornerstone in curriculum and materials development, ensuring instructional relevance and learner engagement. Second, the NWL framework remains conceptually robust, though its application requires methodological diversification through triangulation of questionnaires, interviews, and observations. Third, digital tools and technology-enhanced approaches have revitalized NA practices, promoting dynamic and data-driven insights into learners’ needs. Conceptually, this study bridges classical and contemporary perspectives on NA. Practically, it offers guidance for teachers, curriculum designers, and material developers to integrate systematic and evidence-based needs analysis into EFL instructional design.

Abstract

Low motivation and engagement among beginner-level santri in learning English in non-formal educational settings have become challenges in mastering English vocabulary. This community service program aimed to improve the vocabulary size of santri at Rumah Qur’an Bani Khamta through digital technology-based English learning using YouTube, Canva, and Kahoot. The implementation method used direct practice targeting early-age santri. The activities were carried out through the introduction of basic vocabulary materials, the use of educational videos, Canva-based worksheets, and Kahoot interactive quizzes. Evaluation was conducted through observation of the students’ participation, enthusiasm, and responses during the learning process. The results showed that the use of digital media and gamification was able to increase the santri’s enthusiasm, active participation, and self-confidence in using English. This program had a positive impact on improving vocabulary size and creating a more interactive, enjoyable, and meaningful learning environment.
