Abstract

Background: Diabetes is a disease caused by a decrease in the hormone insulin produced by the pancreas, or insulin resistance. This results in the body's inability to properly process glucose, leading to elevated blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia). Physical activity is a modifiable risk factor for diabetes, while family history/genetic factors are non-modifiable risk factors. Purpose: To analyze the relationship between physical activity and family history with diabetes mellitus in patients. Method: This quantitative study used an observational analytical approach with a cross-sectional study design. The study was conducted from June to August 2025 with a sample of 100 respondents selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data collection used medical records, questionnaires, and rapid tests (blood sugar measurements). Results: The chi-square test yielded a p-value for the association between physical activity and family history of diabetes mellitus of 0.001. This indicates that both variables have a significant association with the incidence of diabetes mellitus. Conclusion: There is a significant association between physical activity and family history with the incidence of diabetes mellitus.   Keywords: Diabetes Mellitus; Family History; Physical Activity.

Abstract

Background: Rabies is a zoonotic disease that remains a public health problem in Indonesia, with a high mortality rate, despite being preventable through vaccination and post-exposure care. Indonesia is a rabies-endemic country with a high bite rate from rabies-carrying animals, low animal vaccination coverage, delayed post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), and a lack of public awareness, all of which contribute to the increased risk of death. Purpose: To conduct a systematic review of the incidence, risk factors, and mortality rates of rabies in Indonesia. Method: This systematic literature review (SLR) study used the PRISMA guidelines and the PICOS approach. The literature search was conducted from Google Scholar, PubMed/MEDLINE, and ScienceDirect databases for the period 2015-2025. Inclusion criteria included a cross-sectional design, Indonesian and English versions, and full-text access. Of the 4,344 articles searched, only 8 met the inclusion criteria and were reviewed. Results: The incidence of rabies in Indonesia remains high, particularly in endemic areas such as Bali, East Nusa Tenggara, and North Sulawesi, with most rabies cases caused by dog bites. Key risk factors include low dog vaccination coverage, delayed or incomplete PEP, low public awareness, dense stray dog populations, and limited access to health services. Rabies deaths are still reported annually, with a near 100% mortality rate after the onset of clinical symptoms, largely due to delayed treatment and a lack of public awareness of the importance of immediate action after a bite. Conclusion: Rabies in Indonesia remains a significant public health problem, with high incidence and mortality requiring serious attention. Strengthening mass vaccination programs for infected animals, improving access to and compliance with PEP, and ongoing public education are strategic steps to support the target of eliminating rabies deaths.   Keywords: Incidence; Mortality; Rabies; Risk Factors.

Abstract

Background: The high incidence of hypertension, a non-communicable disease, is a public health problem, both globally and nationally. In Manado City, hypertension has a high number of cases, particularly in the Tuminting Community Health Center area, which shows an annual increase in cases. This situation highlights the need to identify risk factors associated with hypertension to facilitate more effective prevention and control efforts. Purpose: To determine the relationship between family history, smoking habits, and physical activity with hypertension. Method: This study used a quantitative analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. It was conducted at the Tuminting Community Health Center in Manado City over a three-month period, from July to September 2025. A sample of 95 respondents was selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through interviews using a questionnaire and analyzed using the Chi-square test. Results: Family history was significantly associated with hypertension (p=0.006), and smoking habits were also significantly associated with hypertension (p=0.009). Meanwhile, physical activity did not show a significant association with the incidence of hypertension (p=0.090). Conclusion: Family history and smoking habits are risk factors associated with the incidence of hypertension. Therefore, promotive and preventive efforts are needed, such as smoking cessation education, early detection in at-risk groups, and increasing public awareness regarding hypertension prevention.   Keywords: Family History; Hypertension; Smoking Habits.

Abstract

Background: Hypertension in the elderly can impair blood flow to the brain and lead to a decline in cognitive function; this makes it a health issue requiring attention within the elderly population. Purpose: To determine the cognitive function profile of elderly patients with hypertension. Method: This study employed an analytical survey design with a cross-sectional approach, involving 81 elderly patients with hypertension selected via purposive sampling. The study was conducted from December to January 2026 at the Tuminting Community Health Center. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) questionnaire was used to assess cognitive function. Results: The majority of respondents were aged 60–69 years (61.7%), female (58.0%), and diagnosed with stage I hypertension (56.8%). Meanwhile, most respondents exhibited normal cognitive function (84.0%), followed by possible cognitive impairment (9.9%) and definite cognitive impairment (6.2%). Conclusion: The majority of elderly patients with hypertension at the Tuminting Community Health Center demonstrated normal cognitive function. However, some respondents were found to have cognitive impairment. Therefore, routine monitoring and management of hypertension are necessary to prevent cognitive decline in the elderly.   Keywords: Cognitive Function; Elderly; Hypertension.
