Abstract

Background: Self-management behavior plays an important role in controlling hypertension and preventing complications. Evidence in the adult population still needs to be strengthened regarding sociodemographic factors such as gender and the duration of having hypertension in influencing variations in self-management behavior. Purpose: To analyze the correlation between gender and duration of hypertension with self-management behavior in adult patients with hypertension. Method: This quantitative study uses a cross-sectional analytical approach, involving 287 adult patients with hypertension registered at six primary healthcare facilities on Tarakan Island, using quota sampling techniques. Data on respondent characteristics, including age, gender, and duration of hypertension, were collected using a general demographic characteristics questionnaire, while self-management behavior was measured using the Hypertension Self-Management Behaviors Questionnaire. Data analysis to determine correlation using the chi-square statistical test, with a significance level of p<0.05. Results: The majority of respondents are female, and more than half have had hypertension £ 3 years. There is a significant correlation between gender and self-management behavior (p=<0.001), with the majority of women exhibiting moderate self-management behavior. Conversely, no significant relationship was identified between the duration of hypertension and self-management behavior (p=0.150). Conclusions: There is a significant relationship between gender and self-management behavior, indicating that gender differences contribute to chronic disease management behavior, particularly in hypertension. Furthermore, the non-significance of the duration of hypertension indicates that the length of illness is not always accompanied by improved self-management behaviors. Nurses and other health professionals need to consider gender differences when designing education and support programs to optimize self-management behaviors in adult patients with hypertension.

Abstract

Hypertension is a major factor in premature mortality and often goes undetected until complications arise, highlighting the necessity for effective prevention and management strategies. Coastal adults who actively manage their hypertension can improve their health and well-being while reducing the possibility of complications. This study aimed to describe the self-management behaviour of adult hypertensive patients living in coastal areas. A cross-sectional descriptive approach was used. A total of 287 adult patients with hypertension were included as samples in this study based on the established inclusion criteria. This study used the Hypertension Self-Management Behaviour Questionnaire (HSMBQ), which contains 40 questions in the Indonesian language version. The majority of self-management behaviours among adult hypertensive patients were categorised as moderate (67.6%), followed by low (18.5%) and high (13.9%). This distribution highlights a significant opportunity for healthcare providers to implement targeted interventions aimed at increasing self-management skills, particularly for those in the low and moderate categories. Interventions designed to enhance awareness and skills in hypertension management can be tailored to the cultural context of coastal communities, thereby improving the proportion of patients classified in the high category. Enhancing these behaviours could lead to improved blood pressure control and overall health outcomes in this population.

Abstract

Background: Dengue fever remains a major public health concern in Indonesia, particularly in coastal communities where environmental conditions facilitate mosquito breeding. At the same time, the increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus, underscores the importance of community-based health education and early detection programs. This community service program aimed to improve public knowledge regarding dengue fever prevention and facilitate early screening for NCD risk factors among coastal residents. Methods: A pre–post community intervention was conducted during a one-day community service program in March 2026 in Lingkas Ujung Village, Tarakan City, involving 35 participants. Health education was delivered through interactive sessions consisting of presentations, discussions, and question-and-answer activities supported by posters and standing banners. Participants' knowledge was assessed using pre-test and post-test questionnaires. Health screening included blood pressure, random blood glucose, total cholesterol, and uric acid measurements. Thirty participants completed both the pre-test and post-test, while all 35 participants underwent health screening. Data were analyzed descriptively using mean scores and frequencies. Results: The mean knowledge score increased from 80.7 before the intervention to 97.7 after the educational session. Health screening showed that 48.6% of participants had prehypertension, 34.3% had hypertension, 45.7% had prediabetes, 11.4% had hyperglycemia, 11.4% had elevated cholesterol levels, and 22.9% had elevated uric acid levels. Conclusion: The community service program effectively improved participants' knowledge of dengue fever prevention while facilitating early identification of NCD risk factors. Similar integrated health education and screening programs should be continuously implemented through collaboration among universities, local health authorities, and community organizations to strengthen preventive health efforts in coastal communities.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a major global health challenge due to its rising prevalence and potential for severe complications. This study analyzed differences in blood pressure among hypertensive patients with and without a medication supervisor Methods: A quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional study was conducted at PKM “X” in Tarakan City. Medication supervisors were defined as family members who monitored patients' adherence to medication. The sample included 89 hypertensive patients selected through purposive sampling. Data collection involved interviews and direct blood pressure measurements using a calibrated sphygmomanometer. Bivariate analysis was conducted using the unpaired T-test and Mann-Whitney test. Results: The findings indicate a significant association between medication supervision and systolic blood pressure control. Patients with medication supervisors had a significantly lower mean systolic blood pressure (143.0 ± 16.3 mmHg) than those without supervisors (153.7 ± 16.5 mmHg; p = 0.003, α = 0.05). The mean difference was 10.7 mmHg (95% CI: 3.7–17.7), with a medium-to-large effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.65), demonstrating both statistical and clinical significance. No significant difference was observed in diastolic blood pressure between the group with a medication supervisor (85.1 ± 14.3 mmHg) and the group without (85.5 ± 11.2 mmHg, p = 0.322). These results indicate that the presence of a medication supervisor is a key factor in optimizing systolic blood pressure regulation. Conclusion: A significant difference in blood pressure, particularly systolic blood pressure, was observed between hypertensive patients with and without medication supervision.
