Abstract

Abstract

Accurate blood cell classification is crucial for diagnosing Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) but limited medical data poses challenges for traditional machine learning models. This study presents a Few-Shot Learning (FSL) framework utilizing a Prototypical Network architecture with a ResNet-34 backbone to classify AML blood cell types from microscopic images. In this study, we utilize datasets consisting of 15 morphologically distinct cell classes. A 15-way, 5-shot, 5-query episodic setup was adopted to simulate data-scarce conditions. Evaluation via 5-fold cross-validation yielded strong performance, with an average accuracy of 97.76%, precision of 98.78%, recall of 96.55%, and F1-score of 97.76%. FSL training times were consistent (4.22–4.26 minutes per fold), and t-SNE along with confusion matrices confirmed the model’s ability to distinguish similar cell types. To validate the approach, its performance was compared with a conventional supervised CNN using the same ResNet-34 backbone. The FSL model outperformed the CNN across all metrics such as accuracy (98.32% vs. 77.25%), precision (98.55% vs. 76.87%), recall (98.31% vs. 78.66%), and F1-score (98.33% vs. 75.26%), while also requiring far less training time (~4.24 min/fold vs. ~420 min total). These results highlight the promise of FSL based methods for accurate, efficient, and scalable hematologic diagnostics in data limited settings.

Abstract

Blood cholinesterase level is the amount of active cholinesterase enzyme in blood plasma and red blood cells. Early detection of pesticide poisoning is by checking the cholinesterase enzyme in the blood. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors affecting cholinesterase enzyme activity in farmer groups in the Trimurdjo district and Central Lampung district. This study uses quantitative research that uses a cross-sectional approach, and the subject of this research is the farmers of Trimurjo District, Central Lampung, as many as 86 farmers. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between cholinesterase enzyme activity and nutritional status variables, pesticide doses, and the highest risk obtained was the variable use of personal protective equipment (PPE) (PR = 0.205, 95% CI = 0.048 - 0.866) in farmers in Trimurjo District, District of Trimurjo Regency. Central Lampung has been controlled by confounding variables. The results showed that the activity of the cholinesterase enzyme in farmer groups who used pesticide doses that were not under SOP (Standard Operating Procedures), did not use personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when spraying, and had poor nutritional status had a higher risk of experiencing pesticide poisoning or cholinesterase enzyme activity. low. Efforts that can be made to reduce the number of farmers experiencing pesticide poisoning or low cholinesterase enzyme activity are by conducting counseling by related sectors.

Abstract

Background: The increasing spread of Aedes aegypti as a vector of dengue disease has encouraged the exploration of safer, plant-based larvicidal materials. This study aimed to identify the phytochemical constituents of green betel leaf (Piper betle L.) extract and to develop a bio-larvicidal granule formulation as a modified dosage form. Phytochemical screening was conducted to identify bioactive compounds potentially associated with larvicidal activity. Methodology: Granules were prepared using the wet granulation method, employing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a binder and lactose as a filler. The formulated granules were further evaluated through physical characterization tests, including flow rate, angle of repose, and dispersion time, to assess their suitability as a granular dosage form. Findings: The results demonstrated that all formulations exhibited acceptable flow properties, appropriate angles of repose, and rapid dispersion in water, indicating favorable handling and application characteristics. The flow rate test results showed that granules with concentration variations of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% exhibited flow rates of 71.4 g/s, 62.5 g/s, 50 g/s, and 45.5 g/s, respectively. Physical evaluation demonstrated that the granules had acceptable angles of repose (31°–36°) and dispersion time (20–25 seconds). Contribution: This study was conducted as a step toward developing an environmentally safe, natural-material-based biolarvicide

Abstract

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis affects approximately 5–25% of the global population, and the limited residence time of conventional topical formulations often reduces therapeutic efficacy at oral mucosal lesions. Polymeric films have emerged as promising localized oral drug delivery systems because they prolong mucosal retention and enable sustained release of bioactive compounds. Garcinia mangostana peel, an abundant agricultural by-product, is rich in xanthones, flavonoids, tannins, and phenolic compounds with antibacterial potential, although its application in oral films remains limited. This study aimed to fabricate and characterize a composite oral film based on starch/poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan containing Garcinia mangostana peel extract and evaluate its physicochemical properties and antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans. Mangosteen peel extract was prepared by maceration using 70% ethanol, cassava starch was isolated by wet extraction, and composite films containing 0%, 1%, and 2% extract were fabricated using the solvent-casting method. Mangosteen peel extraction and cassava starch isolation yielded 10% and 25%, respectively, while phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and phenolic compounds. All formulations produced intact films with uniform thickness (0.260–0.268 mm), neutral pH (6.410–7.393), and folding endurance exceeding 300 cycles. Increasing extract concentration significantly enhanced antibacterial activity (p = 0.009), with inhibition zones increasing from 5.31 ± 0.19 mm (F1) to 6.66 ± 0.38 mm (F2). The 2% extract-loaded formulation exhibited the most balanced physicochemical properties and antibacterial performance, highlighting the potential of starch/poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan composite films as naturally derived platforms for localized oral drug delivery in recurrent aphthous stomatitis.
