Abstract

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide and is closely associated with dyslipidemia, particularly elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels. Statins are recommended as first-line therapy to reduce LDL levels and lower the risk of cardiovascular events in patients with CHD. This literature review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of statin therapy in patients with coronary heart disease. A literature search was conducted using Google Scholar between May 14 and May 29, 2025, with the keywords "statin drugs," "statin effectiveness," "coronary heart disease," and "LDL reduction." Articles were selected based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria, resulting in ten eligible studies. The review showed that atorvastatin was the most frequently prescribed statin and consistently demonstrated effectiveness in reducing LDL levels by approximately 30–50%, increasing HDL levels, and lowering cardiovascular risk. Simvastatin was also effective in managing dyslipidemia, although several studies reported lower effectiveness compared with atorvastatin. Furthermore, a combination of rosuvastatin 10 mg and ezetimibe 10 mg was reported to be more effective in achieving LDL-C targets than high-intensity statin monotherapy in patients at very high cardiovascular risk. Overall, statins are effective for the management of coronary heart disease, with atorvastatin showing the most consistent therapeutic benefits.
