Abstract

This study is motivated by the importance of understanding the relationship between traumatic experiences and the formation of a character’s personality in literary works. The purpose of this study is to describe the representation of past trauma and the formation of the character Dasiyah’s personality in the novel Gadis Kretek by Ratih Kumala, based on Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. This study employs a qualitative approach using library research. The primary data source is the novel Gadis Kretek by Ratih Kumala, while secondary data was obtained from relevant books, journals, and references. Data collection was conducted through reading, listening, and note-taking, followed by analysis using qualitative descriptive analysis. The results indicate that the representation of Dasiyah’s past trauma is depicted in three forms: trauma resulting from the loss of a loved one, trauma resulting from betrayal and disappointment, and trauma that continues to influence the character’s life. This traumatic experience had a profound impact on Dasiyah’s psychological state and was repressed into her subconscious, as explained in Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. Furthermore, the formation of Dasiyah’s personality is evident through the dominance of the ego, which plays a role in rationally managing inner conflicts, and the superego, which shapes her sense of responsibility, morality, and concern for her family. Thus, past trauma is not only part of the plot but also plays a crucial role in shaping the character of Dasiyah.

Abstract

This research is entitled "Resistance to Patriarchal Culture in the Novel Perempuan yang Menangis kepada Bulan Hitam by Dian Purnomo: A Henrietta L. Moore Feminist Study.” The purpose of this study is to describe the forms of patriarchal culture and the forms of resistance carried out by the female protagonist against patriarchal practices in the novel Perempuan yang Menangis kepada Bulan Hitam by Dian Purnomo. This research employs a literary psychology approach using Henrietta L. Moore’s feminist theory, which focuses on gender relations, female subordination, male domination, gender inequality, and women's struggles to achieve autonomy and freedom. The research method used is qualitative with a library research design. The data consist of quotations, dialogues, narrations, and monologues found in the novel. Data were collected through documentation techniques by reading, recording, and classifying the data according to the research focus. The results of the study indicate that the novel represents patriarchal culture through practices such as forced marriage by abduction (kawin tangkap), the subordination of women, restrictions on women’s rights to make life choices, and male domination in decision-making processes. Furthermore, the forms of resistance demonstrated by the female protagonist include rejecting the practice of kawin tangkap, voicing opposition to gender injustice, fighting for bodily autonomy and personal freedom, asserting the right to determine her own future, and challenging cultural norms that perpetuate the oppression of women. This study reveals that women possess the ability to resist patriarchal systems and reclaim their rights through self-awareness, courage, and social support. Therefore, the novel serves as a representation of women's struggles against patriarchal domination and gender-based oppression.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of an older sibling as a substitute parent in the novel Dia Adalah Kakakku by Tere Liye using a sociological literary approach based on Soerjono Soekanto’s role theory. The focus of this research is the representation of the older sibling’s role in performing parental functions, including protection, affection, guidance, economic responsibility, and self-sacrifice for the younger sibling. This study employs a qualitative method with a library research design. The primary data source is the novel Dia Adalah Kakakku, while secondary data are obtained from books, journals, and other relevant literature. Data collection techniques include intensive reading and note-taking, which are then analyzed using content analysis. The results of the study show that the older sibling in the novel assumes the role of a substitute parent due to the absence or inability of biological parents to fulfill their parenting functions. This role is reflected in various actions such as providing protection, emotional support, moral guidance, fulfilling daily needs, and sacrificing personal interests for the future of the younger sibling. These findings indicate that family roles are dynamic and can shift according to social conditions, as represented in literary works.
