Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of flash card learning media in improving students’ ability to read hiragana and katakana in the Japanese Language Center. Basic reading skills are important in Japanese language learning because they become a foundation for mastering vocabulary and other language skills at later stages. However, classroom observations indicate that some students still experience difficulties in recognizing letter forms and reading the corresponding sounds accurately and quickly. This study employed a quantitative approach with a pretest–posttest design. The research participants were students enrolled in classes at the Japanese Language Center. Data were collected using reading tests for hiragana and katakana at the beginning of the study (pretest) and after the implementation of the learning media (posttest). The flash card media were used during the learning process through activities such as letter introduction, repeated reading practice, and pair/group tasks that involved matching letters with sounds. The results of this study are expected to show an increase in students’ reading ability scores for hiragana and katakana after using flash card media. Therefore, this research is expected to contribute to Japanese language learning, particularly at the early stage, and provide references for instructors in selecting learning media that are engaging and effective.
