This study is motivated by the importance of examining the cultural representation of Chinese Indonesian communities in literary works, particularly the ideas concerning human relationships and human perspectives toward the universe, which have received limited attention in previous studies of Handry TM’s novel Kancing yang Terlepas. This study aims to describe the complexity of ideas concerning human relationships and human perspectives toward the universe represented in the novel from a literary anthropology perspective. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method with a literary anthropology approach. The data consisted of words, phrases, clauses, sentences, paragraphs, and discourses found in the novel. Data were collected through document analysis and validated using theoretical triangulation, while data analysis involved data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that ideas concerning human relationships are oriented vertically and horizontally. Vertical relationships are associated with social hierarchy, status, and position, whereas horizontal relationships are reflected in solidarity, mutual assistance, respect, and kinship beyond blood relations. Meanwhile, human perspectives toward the universe are manifested through efforts to interpret and harmonize with natural signs as well as attempts to utilize nature for human purposes. These findings indicate that the novel represents Chinese Indonesian culture in Semarang as a dynamic culture shaped by cultural encounters, negotiation, and assimilation with Javanese culture.
