Abstract

Abstract: This study is aimed at exploring whether a process-genre approach (PGA) teaching steps can help develop senior high students’ writing skills of report text based on schematic structures and linguistic features analysis. A descriptive research design embracing case study characteristics was employed (Nunan, 1992; Cresswell, 2012). The data were gained from teaching process and students’ texts analysis. The basic framework of process-genre approach is the synthesis of teaching steps in genre- and process-based approaches (Badger White, 2000; Emilia, 2010). Students’ texts were analyzed in terms of Report text’s schematic structures and linguistic features using SFL GBA frameworks (Linguistic and Education Research Network, 1990; Gerot Wignell, 1994; Halliday, 1994; Anderson Anderson, 1997; Christie, 2005; Feez Joyce, 2006; Hyland 2007; Emilia, 2012). The results show that, to some extent, PGA helps students develop writing skills of Report text specifically on the genre knowledge, writing process, and feedback from peers and teacher which was observed from the teaching process and schematic structures and linguistic features analysis. Nevertheless, it is figured out that the low-achieving students need longer modelling and teacher-student conference stages. This study is expected to contribute towards teacher’s understanding in implementing and overcoming problems related to PGA in EFL classes in Indonesia, especially in emphasizing the modelling stage for the low-achieving students and in teaching other genres and language skills. Keywords: Process-based approach, genre-based approach, process-genre approach

Abstract

Advances in information technology encourage the emergence of unlimited textual information with the use of online media developing so rapidly that the emergence of the need for information presentation without reducing the value of the information presented. Basicaly the concept of the dataset is a general form of almost every discipline, where the dataset provides empirical basic information for research activities. Sentiment analysis is done to see opinions or feelings about a problem or identify and classify information trends from the problem. The dataset analysis in determining sentiment classification is a model of sentiment classification that has relevance to the dataset with the use of machine learning techniques with supervision that learns from experience to predict output from labeled input data and output from machine learning. The results of experiments and tests that have been carried out on machine learning techniques with supervision can classify sentiments in the tweet text properly and the level of accuracy can still be improved to a better direction with data namely baseline 100 (days) and 83 (weeks), naivebayes 100 (days) and 82 (weeks), maxent 100 (days) and 83 (weeks), and SVM 100 (days) and 83 (weeks).

Abstract

The process writing approach treats writing as a process rather than a completed product. Writing studies are conducted as part of the process due to the completion of the written text. In writing classes, this approach tends to focus on the student, and the teacher only acts as a guide. The process writing approach includes actions that occur when a written text is created. This research analyzed the benefits of the process approach as a teachers’ approach in order to enhance student writing skills in recount text. The researcher used the literature review and some of the previous research which has been conducted before as the measurements toward the process approach could improve student writing skill in recount text whether they understood the material which given by the teacher or not. As a result of the literature review and previous research, the researcher found a significant influence of the process writing approach on writing progress and anxiety mainly in recount text. Based on this finding for written language research, the use of a process writing approach is recommended.

Abstract

Abstract: The research was conducted to pinpoint the students’ reading strategies when they apply cognitive academic language learning approach (CALLA) instructional reading strategies in reading analytical exposition text. The research used qualitative approach which involved the case study method. The participants involved in this research were the 11th Class MIA3 students at SMAN 2 Pringsewu, Lampung. In collecting the data the teacher used think-aloud protocol, observation and questionnaire. The result of this study show that in applying CALLA instructional reading strategy, the students used the entire of three primary of reading strategies suggested in CALLA such as; meta-cognitive strategy, cognitive strategy and social - affective strategy in reading analytical exposition text. The researcher suggested to the teacher to apply the instructional reading strategy in teaching reading. Finally, the researcher suggested the students to know many kinds of reading strategies that could be applied in comprehending the analytical exposition text.Key words: reading strategy, analytical exposition, CALLA instructional reading strategy

Abstract

Natural Language Processing is part of Artificial Intelegence that focus on language processing. One of stage in Natural Language Processing is Preprocessing. Preprocessing is the stage to prepare data before it is processed. There are many types of proccess in preprocessing, one of them is stemming. Stemming is process to find the root word from regular word. Errors when determining root words can cause misinformation. In addition, stemming process does not always produce one root word because there are several words in Indonesian that have two possibilities as root word or affixes word, e.g.the word “beruang”.To handle these problems, this study proposes a stemmer with more accurate word results by employing a non deterministic algorithm which gives more than one word candidate result. All rules are checked and the word results are kept in a candidate list. In case there are several word candidates were found, then one result will be chosen. This stemmer has been tested to 15.934 word and results in an accurate level of 93%. Therefore the stemmer can be used to detect words with more than one root word.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the constructivist approach to enhance students reading comprehension at UMS Rappang. This research employed the pre-experimental method with one group pre-test and post-test design. The population was the second-year students of UMS Rappang in 2018-2019 academic years. The population included 66 students consisting of three classes; one class (I.2) was taken as a sample by using cluster sampling, as many as 22 students. The instrument used in this research was reading test. The result of this research showed that the pre-test got the mean score of 44.50, while the post-test 64.18. It showed that the p-value (0.000) was lower than the level of significance (alpha (α) = 0.05). It means that H1 was accepted. The research concluded that teaching reading comprehension by using a constructivist approach enhances students’ reading comprehension at the First year of UMS Rappang.
