Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the most important parts of language acquisition. Without vocabulary, people will not be able to deliver the message of the conversation. Therefore, students need to develop their vocabulary in order to be able to communicate in English. This research was conducted to investigate on how short story helped students on acquiring English Vocabulary in Basic Reading 2 Class. Therefore, the researcher had formulated two research questions: “How do short stories help students to learn vocabulary in Basic Reading 2 class?” and “What are the activities using short stories that can be applied to teach vocabulary in Basic Reading 2 class?” Theories from Nation (1990) and Parvareshbar & Ghoorchaei (2016) were used to answer the research question formulated. Survey method was conducted in this research. The data were collected using observation sheet and field notes that were used to note the activities conducted in the class of thirty second semester students who were enrolled in Basic Reading 2 class, also an interview with the lecturer of Basic Reading 2 class. The result of this research is that there are five activities conducted by the lecturer.  Two of the activities are stated in the theory by Nation (1990) and the other three were found in the teaching and learning process. Future researchers are suggested to explore more methods that will benefit the students of Basic Reading 2 class in their process of learning new vocabulary.

Abstract

To improve the quality of education outcomes, English teachers have to enhance their competence in assessing students‘ learning. In fact, in Curriculum 2013, many Englishteachers find difficulties in assessing students‘ learning. One of the reasons is lack ofknowledge about the model of assessment for Curriculum 2013. Therefore, in this article, analternative model of project-based assessment is proposed. The focus here is on the Englishwriting competence. This article actually concerns with a proposed model of assessment withpilot study data. The pilot study was conducted by adapting research and development (R &D) procedure. The participants of the study were English teachers from Yogyakarta andgraduate students of English Language Studies, Sanata Dharma University. The techniqueused were questionnaire and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The data were verbal andnumerical. The result of the pilot study shows that the model is good but needs someimprovement. It also reveals some principles in developing the effective project-basedassessment model: practical, holistic, systematic, systemic, relevant, authentic, andmeaningful. In addition, the project-based instrument should have: clear objectives, clearscoring criteria, clear instruction, clear items and feedback. Keywords: alternative model, project-based assessment, writing competence

Abstract

A reflection on teaching is a way to maintain and improve teachers‘ competence which is officially required. One of the reflection sessions to conduct is the end-meeting reflection. The reflection helps teachers evaluate their teaching practice which has been done to confirmthe accomplishment of lesson objectives and to improve their future teaching quality. However, the absence of reflection activity occurs not due to the lack of awareness about theimportance of reflection, but mainly because of the administrative work load and the tightteaching schedule. Therefore, the researcher aims to propose a reflection model to conformteachers‘ insufficient time in doing a reflection. The theories of reflection and the feedbackfrom practitioners underlie the proposed heuristic five-minute end-meeting reflection modelwhich can be done at the junior high school level. Abstract

The Philosophy of translation is excluded from the framework of translation studies. Nevertheless, it is actually essential for developing the theory and practice of translation aswell as solving both internal and external challenges toward the theory and practice oftranslation. Hence, this article proposes the inclusion of philosophy in the framework andoffers a communicative-functional paradigm as the philosophy of translating from Indonesianinto English and vice versa. This paradigm construes translation as interculturalcommunicative act directed by the target-side purpose. It is rooted ontologically as therecodification of matrix code into target code which results in what Ricoeur calls as theequivalence without identity, epistemologically with the employment of cluster concept andaxiologically by directing intercultural mediation with three ethical principles i.e. the primacyof purpose, the loyalty to people and the respecting difference. In Indonesia especially inYogyakarta, based on the interview conducted to professional translators in PéMadInternational Translation, this paradigm has been internalized by Indonesian translatorswithout conscious reflection of the paradigm as the philosophical foundation of theirtranslation practices. Keywords: translation, philosophy, communicative-functional paradigm

Abstract

The article, firstly, analyzes some basic concepts of translation and cooperative learningmodel. Further, a design of translation course’s syllabus for an undergraduate level isdescribed. In addition, an example of lesson plan and an example of students’ analysis areelicited. The teaching methodology consists of a step-by-step procedure which adopts thecooperative learning model. In this cooperative learning model, the educator is understood asa facilitator, whose role is providing the materials, checking the students’ understanding, giving feedback, and evaluating the failures and the weaknesses of the knowledge-transferprocess.Therefore, the transfer process of translation theory and practice is mainlyaccomplished by the students, collectively and individually. Overall, the implementation ofcooperative learning model in the design and procedure of translation course is viewed as aneffective way to improve the ability of students in translating English text into Indonesian andin translating Indonesian text into English. Keywords: translation course, cooperative learning, undergraduate level

Abstract

In Indonesian prose, nature is frequently described as the life support of human beings. The studies about the role of nature in Indonesian prose are still anthropocentric. This paper analyses the position of nature in parallel to woman as the feminine side of culture against male domination using the ecofeminist approach. This paper analyzes Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk by Ahmad Tohari which describes nature as an explorative aspect and culture as a more treasured value than nature. Furthermore, this novel is used to perceive that the work of Asian writers is worth studying as well as to show that the work provides characteristics of the region. By adding another perspective using ecofeminism, this study is expected to contribute in the studies of Asian Literature, especially in Indonesian literature. In addition, this study contributes in the reading of nature exploitation in literary work and discourse about ecofeminism. Keywords: nature, ecofeminism, feminization, culture, Asian Literature

Abstract

Feedbacks have been seen as an effective way to help language learners acquire second language competence. This study aims to find out how the written corrective feedback (CF) has been used in the adult ESL classroom. In this study, the data were generated through the learner’s writing. Then the data were put into direct, coded and uncoded type of the written corrective feedback. In addition, those types of feedback were categorized into content and form category to find the scope of the written corrective feedback. As the result, the direct written corrective feedback was mostly used by the teachers. Interestingly, the teachers only used the uncoded written corrective feedback when it refers to the content of the writing. Besides, the dynamic corrective feedbacks that occur several times can be a proof that the teachers not only focus on the form the writing but also the content. Keywords: written corrective feedback, ESL

Abstract

This study compares the features of poetry works of Victor Hugo from the Romantic Movement to those of Alfred Lord Tennyson from the Victorian Age of literature who lived in cutting age of the two periods of literature. These two ages experienced great expansion of industrial and agricultural revolutions, expansion of British as a super power nation with many colonies and the French revolution which to a great extent influenced the writings of these authors. Romanticism style of portraying themes of imagination, natural beauty and individual emotions over reasoning and sense of intellect influenced the poets of the age of Victorian literature though they still addressed the problems of the Victorian age. Both poets composed short and long poems, used description and sentimental styles, used nature metaphorically to create imagery and describe the emotions of appreciating beauty of the nature and reflecting people’s struggle in different situations of life.Key words: Literature of the Romantic period, literature of the Victorian Age, Victor Hugo, Alfred Tennyson.

Abstract

This is a critical paper inspecting metaphors, the most artistic device, in Mahmoud Darwish's poetry. This research classified metaphors into three basic categories: metaphors of trees and plants such as wheat, metaphors of animals and birds such as butterfly, hoopoe, and dove, and metaphors of concrete and abstract natural elements. This study reports the fact that Darwish was brought up in a rural community. His father was a villager who grew crops for being food secure. Consequently, that rural environment affected the poetry of Darwish through metaphors and symbolism. Thus, it can be concluded that these poetic metaphors are a logic outcome of that rural atmosphere.
