Abstract

The aim of Indonesia National Education is to bring its people and country towards better development of skills and characters or attitude in order to be democratic and responsible citizens. A curriculum needs to be created in order to support the achievement of this goal. The current curriculum 2013, has tried to emphasize on knowledge, skills and attitude all of which are in line with the goal of Indonesia National Education. It emphasizes on three types of learning namely project-based, problem-based, and discovery learning in order to promote more skilful people. Yet, it is problematic in some ways for it does not provide enough time allocation for knowledge and skill development. English is now taught in one meeting only in a week. Also, the problem lies in the assessment. It separates the assessment of knowledge, skills, and attitude. It seems to forget that in those types of learning, students have to integrate those aspects in order to accomplish a projector to solve a problem. The partial assessment makes those types of learning impossible. Therefore, an alternative authentic and holistic assessment for a year project for vocational high school students is developed to improve students‟ progress as a whole.

Abstract

This article is an attempt to examine the emerging identities and the primary examples of exceptionalism in early American literature by a review of excerpts from the "Letters from an American Farmer" written by J. Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur. To this end, after a brief introduction, exceptionalism is defined and explained as a political and ideological attitude. Then, a brief overview of pre-revolution and war literature is provided along with some prominent examples of literary works. Finally, after introducing the author’s work, the third letter of the above series entitled "What is an American?" is selected and analyzed within the theoretical framework of this article which addresses the emergence of American identity in early literary works. More specifically, the present article examines the American social life, emerging identities and the early signs of exceptionalism from Crèvecoeur’s perspective. As a conclusion, the analysis of selected excerpts shows that there are rudimentary elements and examples of this ideology in the case under study.

Abstract

This study analyzes Kiana Davenport’s the House of Many Gods, a novel that contextualizes the issue of the nuclearized Pacific and the islanders’ exposure toward the toxic substance as an intersection between environmental/eco-criticism and disability studies. Deriving from Carrigan’s concept of disabling environment, this article foregrounds the continuation of western colonialism and nuclear militarism in the Pacific which is positioned as the periphery, far from the Western metropolitan center. The presence of nuclearized military installations in the Pacific articulates the unequal relationship between the metropolitan center and distant overseas colony in the Pacific as a site for experimentation. The novel dramatizes how the islanders are exposed toward dangerous and toxic substances which ravaged their bodies, denied their agency as healthy citizens, alienated them from their landscape (aina) and kept them in a state of continuous disablement. Employing Carrigan’s concept of disabling environment, this paper argues that the exploitation of indigenous people is legitimized under the guise of advancing Western scientific advancement. This study concludes that the Pacific islanders as it is represented in the House of Many Gods are instrumentalized as the ‘non-human’ in which their existence is necessary for the scientific progress of the Western powers.

Abstract

In Indonesian prose, nature is frequently described as the life support of human beings. The studies about the role of nature in Indonesian prose are still anthropocentric. This paper analyses the position of nature in parallel to woman as the feminine side of culture against male domination using the ecofeminist approach. This paper analyzes Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk by Ahmad Tohari which describes nature as an explorative aspect and culture as a more treasured value than nature. Furthermore, this novel is used to perceive that the work of Asian writers is worth studying as well as to show that the work provides characteristics of the region. By adding another perspective using ecofeminism, this study is expected to contribute in the studies of Asian Literature, especially in Indonesian literature. In addition, this study contributes in the reading of nature exploitation in literary work and discourse about ecofeminism.

Abstract

The structure of a sentence might be influenced by how information is intended to be delivered. In legal texts, how words are arranged is a crucial factor as it might affect how readers understand the messages in the texts. This study investigates the information structure of a prepositional phrase (PP) namely by + V-ing in social media’s legal texts. The data sources of this study were nine legal texts from five social media, namely Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and TikTok. The analysis process resulted in the findings that 43 % of the phrases were preposed and 57 % were in postverbal position. The study also found that every placement of the PP is able to present both given or new information, with introduction of new information dominates the use of the PP. Further, the research also observed several contexts in which the PP is employed. From the research, it is expected that the results could help readers in understanding information delivered in legal texts.
