Abstract

Abstract: Transdermal delivery system is one of the delivery system for Pentagamavunon-0 (PGV-0) toavoid the high intensity of first pass metabolism of PGV-0 in peroral route. The purpose of this researchwas to optimize the formula of PGV-0 transdermal matrix with a combination of PVP K30 and HPMCpolymers. The simplex lattice optimization approach of the transdermal matrix formulas was performed byusing Design Expert 7.1.5 software. The visual appearance, weight, thickness, moisture content, moistureuptake, folding endurance, drug content, and dissolution efficiency of the release profil of PGV-0 from thematrix for 6 hours were evaluated as responses to determine optimum formula of matrix. The resultshowed that a combination of PVP K30 and HPMC polymers had a significant influence on the visualappearance, moisture content, and dissolution efficiency of PGV-0. Combination of 1.98% of PVP K30and 4.52% of HPMC as the optimum formula could produce homogeneous and flexible matrix withmoisture content of 3.21%. The dissolution efficiency was 9.11%, indicating that 101.93 g of PGV-0 wasreleased from the optimum formula during 6 hours. Keywords : Pentagamavunon-0, Transdermal matrix, PVP K30, HPMC

Abstract

Abstract: Antibacterial is a substance that can interfere with the growth and metabolism of bacteria, sothat these substances can inhibit growth or even kill bacteria. This research aimed to utilize naturalmaterials as a natural antibacterial. This study investigated the ability of isolates catechins of tea leaves toinhibit Staphylococcus aureus and spectral identification of these catechins. Catechin compounds wasextracted by water, and then fractionated with CHCl3 and ethyl acetate. Ethyl acetate phase wasconcentrated fractionation results using a rotary evaporator for further separation using thin layerchromatography with various mobile. The results of the study showed that the concentration of isolates ofdemonstrated to be effective as antibacterial, with MIC 12.5%. UV spectrum measurement showed that theisolates had a maximum absorption at a wavelength of 279 nm while the FTIR spectrophotometer showedthat isolates catechin-containing functional groups C = C aromatic absorption 1500-1600 nm^-1 and OHgroups, a broad band between 2000 and 3600 nm^-1.Key words: isolates catechins, Staphylococcus aureus, tea leaves, antibacterial

Abstract

Abstract: Abnormality of lipid profile is one of cardiovascular risk factors which increases with aging.Anthropometric measurement is one of the predictors of abnormal lipid profile without invasive methodsand affordable cost. One of the anthropometric measurements that could be used as a predictor is waist tohip ratio (WHR). The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between WHR with abnormality oflipid profile which were related to total cholesterol, Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL), High DensityLipoprotein (HDL), and triglyceride (TG) in pre-geriatrics and geriatrics group. This study was analyticalobservational with cross sectional design. Statistical analysis used Kolmogorov-Smirnov followedbivariable analysis with confidence interval (CI) 95%. The correlation statistical test used Pearson andSpearman. The results showed no statistically significant correlation between WHR with total cholesterol(r=-0.054, p 0.05), LDL (r=-0.047, p 0.05), TG (r=0.018, p 0.05), and HDL (r=0.016, p 0.05).Keywords: lipid profile, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), pre-geriatric, geriatri

Abstract

Abstract: Euphorbia tirucalli L. (Euphorbiaceae) or patah tulang has been used traditionally in Java fortreatment of fungal infections (Propionibacterium acnes causing acne and Candida albicans causingcandidasis). Information on their use is available, but scientific data on their bioactivity and safety ofactions still scanty. A study was conducted on the effect of organic extracts of this plant on fungal strains.Aceton extract were evaluated through the disc diffusion assay. Aceton extract was prepared by Soxhletapparatus for eight hours. Bacteria and yeast test strains were cultured on TSA (Trypthone Soya Agar)and on PDA (Potato Dextrose Agar) for Candida albicans. A 0.5 McFarland standard suspension wasprepared. Sterile paper discs 6 mm in diameter impregnated with 10 ml of the test extract (100 mg/ml)were aseptically placed onto the surface of the inoculated media. Thymol 0,5% and ketokonazol 2% wereused as standards. Discs impregnated with dissolution medium were used as controls. Activity of theextracts was expressed according to zone of inhibition diameter. Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) was used forpreparing test extracts (10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100%) and were tested for Minimum Inhibitory Concentration(MIC) to Propionibacterium acnes and Candida albicans. MIC were obtained that 100% test extract wasgreatest and 10% test extract was weakest. Then, test extracts were prepared by concentrations 10, 9, 8, 7,6, 5%, and the result were the best were 10% test extract to Propionibacterium acnes and 6% test extractto Candida albicans. Antimicrobial test for pharmaceutical preparation, i.e. cream (o/w) were preparedusing 9 and 10% test extracts mixed with cream for testing to Propionibacterium acnes and 5 and 6% testextracts with cream for testing Candida albicans. The final results were 10% test extract had MIC toPropionibacterium acnes and 6% test extract had MIC in cream to Candida albicans. Keywords: Euphorbia tirucalli L., DMSO, Thymol, antimicrobial potency, cream (o/w), Propionibacteriumacnes, Candida albicans

Abstract

Abstract: Trans-cinnamaldehyde is the major chemical compound of cinnamon oil which is potential as anantibacterial agent. Due to this activity, Cinnamon oil can be formulated into a lotion for practical use. This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of cinnamon oil and cinnamon oil lotion againstStaphylococcus epidermidis, which causes unacceptable foot odor. This study was a pure experimentalstudy. Stages of this study were starting from the obsevation of antibacterial activity of Cinnamon oilagainst Staphylococcus epidermidis which was done by using diffusion method to determine theconcentrations used in the formulation. Cinnamon oil was then formulated into lotions with variation ofconcentrations of 12; 18; and 24% (w/w) respectively. Furthermore, the quality of lotion based on itsphysical properties such as viscosity and spread-ability, and the antibacterial activity of lotion weredetermined. The inhibition zones then were statistically analyzed by using the Kruskal-Wallis test withassistance of R 2.14.1software. The result showed that cinnamon oil lotion had good physical properties ata concentration of 12% (w/w). Cinnamon oil itself and the formulations had significant activity againstStaphylococcus epidermidis. Moreover, cinnamon oil and its formulation showed similar antibacterialactivity against Staphylococcus epidermidis. Keywords : antibacterial activity, cinnamon oil, lotion, Staphylococcus epidermidis
