Abstract

The decoction of avocado peels was tested for their hepatoprotective activity against carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxicity in rat. The rats were treated with the decoction of avocado peels at doses of 363; 762, 1600 mg/kg per oral once in a day for 6 days and carbon tetrachloride (2 mL/kg) was given on the 7th day. Different groups of rats were given water decoction of avocado peels at a dose of 363; 762, 1600 mg/kg and after 6 hours received carbon tetrachloride (2 mL/kg), respectively. The degree of protection was measured by using biochemical parameters like serum transaminase, alkaline phosphatase and albumin. From these results it suggested that the decoction of avocado peels 762, 1600 mg/kg for 6 hours has a potent hepatoprotective action upon carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatic damage in rats.

Abstract

Sweet potato cultivar Cilembu, kind of rancing from Cilembu Village, Sumedang, West Java has really sweet taste due to the high content of reducing sugar. The amount of reducing sugar needs to be proven scientifically. The study aimed to compare Somogyi-Nelson method and Anthrone-Sulfate method in order to determine reducing sugar level in Cilembu sweet potato. Cilembu sweet potato must be stored in freezer at 15C for 2 weeks before used as the sample. Analytical method validation was performed for the two methods. The determination results between two methods were compared. The amount of reduction sugar (glucose) from Cilembu sweet potato determined by Somogyi-Nelson method was 3.42%, the value of %recovery was 99.8%, LOD = 0.00167 (mg/mL), LOQ = 0.00557 (mg/mL), and value of RSD was 3.7%. While the average amount of reduction sugar determined by Anthrone-Sulfate method was 14.9%, the value of %recovery was 74.7%, LOD = 0.0198 (mg/mL), LOQ = 0.066 (mg/mL), and value of RSD = 8.6%. The Somogyi-Nelson method was more recommended for the analysis of the reducing sugar in Cilembu sweet potato compared with Anthrone-Sulfate method.

Abstract

Epigallocatechingallate (EGCG) in green tea extract has activity as an anti-inflammatory agent. On the other hand the stability of EGCG is poor because of the oxidation. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of Vitamine C and Vitamine E in formulation of green tea extract cream to the stabiliy of EGCG. The green tea extract was obtained from the extraction process by infundation followed by fractination with ethyl acetate as the solvent. The three formulas were compiled in similar composition with the concentration of vitamine C 1% (FI), Vitamine E 1% (FII) and there was no Vitamine C and Vitamine E (FIII) as a control. The EGCG level was determinated by TLC-densitometry methode. The stability parameter was determinated by calculated of the Q10 of each formula. The result of this study showed that the parameter of t90 of EGCG with Vitamine C 1%, Vitamine E 1% and control addition were 0.0108 hours, 0.0087 hours, 0.0084 hours, respectively. Stability of EGCG in green tea leaf extract cream with addition of the vitamin C 1% was higher than it stability with the addition of vitamin E 1%. The concentration of Vitamin C 1% was the optimum concentration as antioxidant in formulation of green tea extract cream.

Abstract

Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) has been known as traditional medicinal plants. It needed to evaluate the safety of roselle extract on long-term oral administration. The research aimed to determine the savety of ethanolic extract of roselle calyx. Subchronic toxicity study of ethanolic extract of roselle calyx had been carried out on 60 Sprague Dawleys (SD) rats for 28 days. The roselle extract was administered orally every day, with doses of 50,100 and 200 mg/kgBW. There are 2 satellite groups, kept for another 14 days after the treatment in order to detect a delayed occurrence of toxic effect. Satellite group was given extract 200 mg/kgBW for 28 days and followed aquadest treatment for 14 days. At the end of experiment the blood was collected for meansuring SGPT, SGOT and ALP activity. The result showed that treatment of roselle calyx extract had no significant changes in SGPT SGOT, ALP activity. The delayed effect was not also observed. The ethanolic extract of roselle calyx didnt show toxic effects on the liver on subchronic administration.

Abstract

Antihypertensive therapy requires adherence therapy to achieve therapeutic targets such as controlling blood pressure both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Pharmacists in counseling interventions have been developed in the form of brief Counseling - 5A and SMS reminders. But the relationship between adherence and blood pressure control is still studied and both of them are related to many factors that can affect. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship of the level of compliance antihypertensive therapy and control of blood pressure (systolic and diastolic) hypertension patients in outpatient PKU Muhammadiyah Bantul, Yogyakarta who get Brief counseling - 5A and SMS motivation.Patients who met the inclusion criteria were divided into 2 groups, the treatment group (n = 30) who received Brief counseling - 5A and SMS motivation, and the control group (n = 30) who received usual care (conventional counseling). Data were collected by interviews using questionnaires compliance of Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS), the value of blood pressure is taken from the medical record. Correlation between level of adherence and blood pressure control have been analyzed using Fisher test. The results showed the treatment group with categories adherent patients (n=25) was increase in blood pressure control by 36.67% compared with the control group of patients adherent category (n=6) only 6.67% that has control of the blood pressure on post study. In contrast to patient with adherent category, who had uncontrolled blood pressure are 46.67% (treatment group) compared to the control group 13.33% on the post study. Patients categories of non-adherent but is having control of blood pressure showed 3.33% (treatment group) and 26.67% (control group) on the post study. Although the rate of compliance in the treatment group was higher than control group on the second visit, but there was no significant relation between the level of compliance and controlling blood pressure both in control group (p=1.000) and intervention group (p=0.622) on the second visit (post). The rate of compliance and blood pressure control of patients with hypertensive was low. There were many factors such as poor of knowledge, drugs side effect, poly pharmacy, which related with level of compliance. There was no correlation between antihypertensive compliance and blood pressure control in hypertensive patients ambulatory PKU Muhammadiyah Bantul Hospital, who get Brief counseling 5A and SMS motivation. Therefore it is necessary to do further research to identify factors that influence to improve patients awareness in the management of hypertension.

Abstract

Diabetic neuropathy is defined as symptoms of peripheral nerve dysfunction in people with diabetes after the exclusion of other causes. According to the earlier studies symptoms of neuropathy such as pain, burning, paresthesia/tingling and numbness can be reduced with neurotropic supplementation. The aim of the research is to determine vitamin B1, B6 and B12 as a determinant factor in the reduce total symptom score in patient with diabetic peripheral neuropathy. This research used case series studies and choose 43 sample with consecutive sampling method. We observed symptoms of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (pain, burning, tingling and numbness) measured as total symptoms score, among the patients treated with vitamin B1 (100mg), B6 (100mg) and B12 (5000mcg) for a month. Measurement of total symptoms score performed at first meeting, the second week later (day-14) and the fourth week later (day-30). The data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate statistics. The patients (n=43) consisted of 20 male (46.5 %) and 23 female (53.5 %). The symptoms of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (pain, burning, tingling and numbness) that measured by total symptoms score compared with first visit (4.70 1.83), second visit (2.99 1.61) and third (2:37 1.62). Bivariate analysis, showed a correlation between a reduction in total symptoms score after giving therapy of vitamin B1 (100mg), B6 (100mg) and B12 (5000mcg) with p = 0.00. Vitamin B1, B6 and B12 proved to be a determinant factor to reduce total symptoms score (pain, burning, tingling, and numbness) in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
