Abstract

ABSTRACT             This study is an attempt to analyze, describe, and contrast English and Taa language which focuses on the interrogative sentences in relation to their forms and functions in both languages. The data of the English language were collected from books by Aarts (2001) Azar (1996, 2003), Downing and Locke (2006), and Lou (2006), whereas the data of Taa language were collected by interviewing and recording using a mobile phone recording, resulting in the collected audio materials as the primary data. The data were then analyzed and described. To find out the forms and functions of interrogative sentences, the writer used theory of interrogative sentences based on Aarts (2001), Azar (1996, 2003), Downing and Locke (2006), Lou (2006), and Parera (1988). After that, the data were contrasted by using Lado’s theory (1971). The results of this study show that these two languages have differences as well as similarities. There are eight similarities and fifteen differences between both languages.       Keywords: Interrogative Sentences, English, Taa Language, Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research entitled “Compliment Utterances in The Film Me Before You by Jojo Moyes : Pragmatic Analysis”. The aims of this research is to identify, classify and analyze the compliment utterances and their function in Me Before You film. This research used a descriptive method. The data were collected from conversation among characters, then they classified and analyzed they are according to the concept of Holmes (1986).The result shows five types of compliment utterances and their function applied by the characters in their dialogues. First, ability consists of 7 compliment utterances based on compliment abilities that function to express solidarity and admiration for abilities that are real. Second, possession consist of 10 compliment utterances based on compliments of possession that serves to express an admiration for human property that is real deserves compliment or appreciation. Third, physical appearance consist of 8 compliment utterances the function of expressing a sense of attraction will fascinate the physical appearance who intends to give real compliment without the desire to mock that can establish a smooth and positive communication relationship. Fourth, personality consist of 22 compliment utterances based on personality compliment that serves to express a sense of solidarity, admiration, appreciation of the behaviour, character, or nature of someone who can build one's self-confidence. Fifth, quality consist of 3 compliment utterances based serves to express a sense of appreciation for someone good and bad qualities. This compliment phrase also serves to appreciate the actions or qualities produced by someone who can build one's enthusiasm. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled ‘Register Used in Beauty Pageants Page of Social Media Instagram’. It is expected to give contribution for the theoretical building of the linguistic field, particularly supports the development of subject dealing with sociolinguistics for the other studies and especially also for the beauty pageants lover as this research about the register used in beauty pageants page of media social Instagram. It is an attempt to identify and classify the register used in beauty pageants page in social media instagram and to analyze the variation of language and linguistic form of register used in beauty pageants page in social media instagram. The theories which used in this research are Martin Joos (1968) about variation of language and George Yule (2006) about linguistic form and this research applies a descriptive method. Data were taken in instagram posting from January 2016 to July 2018 posted by 21 users who have been followed by the writer. The result shows that register found in instagram are pride, winner, gown, wardrobe, top, sneakpeak, beauty class, close up battle, catwalk class, bubbling up, placed, styled, crowned, brushed, cocktail dress, stunning, beauty queen, miss, yash, sist, shay, missosology, muses, sash, backtoback, backstage, wishlist, fasttrack, grandfinal, hotpick, funfact, photoshoot, titleholder, powerhouse, firstwalk, glamshoot, fitting, photo, asst, decor, pic, represent, roat to, opnum, MUA, PL, MGIO, BWAP, QNA, BTS, MUO, MS, RU, natcos and TBA. Variation of language that used in register word in instagram are frozen, formal, consultative, casual and intimate, while linguistic form of register found in Instagram are coinage, borrowing, compounding, blending, clipping, backformation, conversion and acronyms. Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research is entitled “Taboo Words in English and Mongondow Language: A Contrastive Analysis” is analyzed and describe in sociolinguistic field. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify and describe the types and meaning of taboo words and to analyze their differences and similarities in English and Mongondow Language. This research used a descriptive method. The data is analyzed using theory of Wardhaugh (1986:230) to find out the types, using Leech’s theory (1981:19) to find out the meaning, and were contrasted to find out the differences using Lado’s theory (1971:217). The significances of this research are theoretically, this research is expected to give contribution to the development of sociolinguistics especially in terms of taboo words and to practically, this research can be useful, for young Mongondow generation who want to learn taboo words in English and for foreign learners who want to study taboo words in Mongondow language. The result of this research shows that taboo words found in Mongondow language were classified into eight types, they are, sex, excretion, bodily function, death, animal, religion, supernatural and hollo. The simillaritiess in English and Mongondow Language is the use of this word can cause misunderstanding and the differences of English and Mongondow Language is taboo words in Mongondow have levels whereas in English there is no level. This shows that the causes of using taboo words are to express the happiness, such as anger, emotion, and surprise, to joke, to insult, and to talk about sex. Keywords : Taboo Words; English and Mongondow Language; Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research is entitled “Verbal Interaction between Teacher and Students of the Sixth Grade of SD GMIM 31 MANADO and Its Influences on the Students’ Motivation”. In this research, the writer focuses on verbal interactions that occur between teacher and students in the classroom and how the interaction influence on students’ motivation. The aims of this research are to identify and classify the kinds of verbal interaction occuring between teacher and stdents in the classroom as well as to analyze how the interaction influences students’ motivation. In this research, the writer uses qualitative method with case study. To analyze several kinds of verbal interactions that occur between teacher and students in the class, the writer uses theory of FIAC by Flanders (1963). Interviews were conducted to find out whether verbal interactions influence student’s motivation. The results of this research show 8 categories of interaction that occur in the class; acceptance of feelings, praising or encouragement, asking questions, lecture, giving directions, criticizing or justifying, response, silent or confusions. In addition, the results of interview show that the interaction influences student motivation in these ways: 1) students like to learn English, 2) students can read in English, 3) students can write in English, 4) students can speak in English, 5) students can listen in English, 6) students understand what the teacher teaches when learning English, 7) the way of teacher to teach is fun for students, 8) teacher often use English when teaching, 9) what is interesting about English, 10) internal interaction class when the learning process between teacher and student motivates the student.      Key Words: Interaction, Students’ Motivation

Abstract

ABSTRACT  This research is entitled ?Students? Perception on the Use of English Songs for Learning English?. The objectives of the research are to identify, classify, and describe the students? perception about learning English using song. Also, it is to analyze and describe the aspects of learning that can increase students? English skills through listening English song. This research used descriptive method. The writer collected data by interviewing 20 participants at English Department, Faculty of Humanities, Sam Ratulangi University. The writer has found seven perceptions as the result of this research They are The Use of English songs to learning English is fun; not boring; effective learning media; entertaining; media to learn about culture; encouragement to learn; improve brain capacity. In this research, the writer also found improvement in students? vocabulary, pronounciation, listening and speaking skills. There are 15 students feel the improvement in their vocabulary skill, 16 students in pronounciation skill, 15 students in listening skill and 17 students in speaking skill.  Keywords: Students? perception, English Learning, Learning media, Song

Abstract

ABSTRACTWhite Teeth is a 2000 novel by the British author Zadie Smith. It focuses on the later lives of two wartime friends the Bangladeshi Samad Iqbal and the Englishman Archie Jones and their families in London.This research Entitled”Nilai-nilai pertemanan yang dicerminkan dalam Novel White Teeth Karya Zadie Smith” aims to find the values of friendship that exist in the novel through the nature of some of the characters in the novel. this research is expected to be useful for readers in order to understanding the meaning of friendship in life.Through the Friendship Theories by James O.Grunebaum and characterby Robert Stanton, the data were collected by emphasizing on the process and the factors that affected the characters in friendship in the story. In analyzing the data, the writer used the descriptive method with extrinsic and intrinsic approach.The results show that the friendship values of the author are determines the values of friendship and also the value of friendship shown in the characterization of Zadie Smith's White Teeth novel which is illustrated by two main characters, Archie Jones and Samad Iqbal, including the Value of Understanding, Trust, Loyalty and Cooperation as stated above has an influence on their lives and their survival after World War II.Keyword: Friendship Values, Characters, Zadie Smith, White Teeth

Abstract

ABSTRAKTION In dieser Untersuchung wurde die moralische Botschaft im Film Tschick von Wolfgang Herrndorf geschprochen. Diese Untersuchung hat das Ziel, um die moralische Botschaft im Film Tschick zu identifizieren, zu klasifizieren und zu beschreiben.Als theoretische Grundlage benutzt die Schreiberin die Meinungen von Nurgiyantoro und Suseno. Nach Nurgiyantoro (2013:429) ist Moral etwas, die den Leser von dem Verfasser durch seine Werke geliefert wird. Die Moral zeichnet an das Verständnis (Lehre) über das Gute und die Böse in der Beziehung mit der Handlung, Verhaltung, Verpflichtung, usw. Weiter Suseno (2007:142) teilt die moralische Botschaft wie folgt: Ehrlichkeit, Selbständigkeit, Verantwortung, Unabhängigkeit, Mut, Demut, Kritisch.Die Daten warden durch Film Tschick bekommen. Die Schreiberin benutzt deskriptive methode.Als die Schlüßfolgerung findet die Schreiberin sechs Arten im Film Tschick, nämlich: 1) Ehrlichkeit, 2) Selbständigkeit, 3) Verantwortung, 4) Unabhängigkeit, 5) Mut, 6) Demut. Stichwörter: die moralische Botschaft, der Film, Tschick
