Abstract

                                                   ABSRACT     This research is titled Action Speech Ilokusi in Melodylan Film. In this study discussed a problem that is what are the Functions and Forms of Categories in Melodylan Film. This research aims to identify, classify, and explain the Ilokusi Act based on functions and categories in Melodylan Film that uses Leech and Searle theory with data supply method using simak techniques and note techniques. In the data analysis using PUP method with power techniques such as speech organ refren, other langue, writing, and speech partners.The results of the analysis of this study can be concluded that in film there is a follow-up based on functions consisting of competitive, fun, cooperation, and contradictory while in the form of the category of ilokusi found in this film consists of asertif, directive, commissionive, and expressive.Keywords: Illocutionary Action, Function, Category

Abstract

                                                 ABSTRACT     This research is entitled “Archetypal Analysis as Reflected in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone Novel by JK Rowling”. It is a research which focuses on archetypes reflected by characters in the novel by analyzing them using the concept of character analysis by Mays (2017) and archetype by Jung (1983). By finishing this research, the writer hopes that the way of how Jung described personality construction of people, could help people to understand themselves. This research uses qualitative method in analyzing the data with two steps; first, by identifying archetypes reflected by characters then the second, by analyzing the narration texts or dialogue in order to figure out the reason why it could be concluded as one of the type of archetype. The result shows that, there are twelve characters that reflected the archetypes, by analyzing the narration and dialog in the novel. Each character could have more than one type of archetype. But, not all characters in the novel could reflect the archetype as they need more narration or dialogue of experience and story in order to figure their archetype out.Keywords: Novel, Characters, Archetype

Abstract

                                               ABSTRACT     This research entitled ‘Register Used in Online Transportation Application in North Sulawesi’. It is expected to give contribution for the theoretical building of the linguistic field, particularly supports the development of subject dealing with sociolinguistics for the other studies and especially also for the user of online transportation application as this research about the register used in online transportation application in North Sulawesi. It is an attempt to identify and classify the registers used in online transportation application and to analyze the variation of language and linguistic form of register used in online transportation application in North Sulawesi. The theories which used in this research are Martin Joos (1968) about variation of language and George Yule (2006) about linguistic form and this research applies a descriptive method. Datas were taken in Grab and Gojek applications menus, notifications, messages and services from December 2016 to July 2019 by the writer because he is also working as a Driver in both companies as well. The results of the analysis showed that there are 40 words which contain the variation of languages and linguistic form of register. Variation of languages that used in register word in online transportation application are frozen, formal, consultative, casual and intimate, while language form of register found in online transportation application are coinage, borrowing, compounding, blending, clipping, backformation, conversion and acronyms. The linguistic meanings of register are found using an online dictionary.Keywords : Register, Online Transportation Application : aSociolinguistic Analysis

Abstract

                                              ABSTRACT     The research is entitled “Students’ Perceptions on ELT Materials: A Case Study of Students with Tombulunese Background in the Faculty of Humanities, Sam Ratulangi University”. The objectives of this research are to identify and to analyze about students’ perceptions towards ELT Materials which, in this research, is Written 4 textbook. It is also to analyze and describe the factors that influenced their perceptions of the textbook materials. This research employs case study as an approach and uses a descriptive method. The writer collected the data by interviewing English Department students with Tombulunese background with a total of 6 participants from batch 2015 and 2016. As the result of this research, the writer has found sixteen perceptions based on Tomlinson’s theory of good textbook criterion, where two of them did not fulfill the criteria, and one perception of socio-cultural aspects in the textbook materials. In this research, the writer also found the factors that influenced their perceptions which consists of internal factors and external factors, they are; 1) interest, 2) needs, 3) background, 4) experience 5) culture 6) classroom environment.Keywords: Students’ perception, English learning, ELT materials

Abstract

                                                 ABSTRAK   KEBERADAAN MILITER MINAHASA DI CIMAHI PADA MASA KOLONIAL                                               TAHUN 1896-1942     Penelitian ini berisi tentang keberadaan militer Minahasa pada masa kolonial di Cimahi, yang menjelaskan pembangunan serta perkembangan Cimahi pada masa kolonial Belanda, perjumpaan dengan bangsa Eropa yang menjadi suatu permulaan dalam perkembangan militer di Minahasa serta peranan yang ditimbulkan dari kehadiran dari militer Minahasa di wilayah Hindia Belanda termasuk yang berada di Cimahi. Dalam penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian sejarah dengan tahapan 1. Heuristik (pengumpulan sumber), 2. Verifikasi (kritik sumber), 3. Interpretasi, 4. Historiografi (penulisan sejarah). Hasil dalam penelitian ini menunjukkan 1) Cimahi ditetapkan sebagai salah satu garnisun dan dalam perkembangannya berbagai pembangunan militer kemudian dilakukan. 2) Terjalinnya interaksi dengan bangsa pendatang di tanah Minahasa menyebabkan terjadinya perlawanan. Perkembangan yang ditimbulkan adalah terciptanya aturan untuk menyediakan prajurit dari Minahasa untuk membantu Belanda. 3) Peranan yang ditimbulkan dari hadirnya militer Minahasa di Cimahi selain aktif dalam dunia pers, juga turut dalam berbagai ajang kemiliteran, kompetisi olahraga dan kegiatan sosial.Kata kunci: Militer, Cimahi, Minahasa, Kolonial.                                               ABSTRACTMINAHASA MILITARY PRESENCE IN CIMAHI DURING COLONIAL PERIOD                                                1896-1942     This study contains about the Minahasa military presence during the colonial period in Cimahi, which explains the development of Cimahi during the Dutch colonial period, encounters with Europeans that became a beginning in military development in Minahasa and the role arising from the presence of the Minahasa military in the Dutch East Indies including those in the Cimahi. In this study using historical research method with stage 1. Heuristics (source gathering) 2. Verification (source criticism), 3. Interpretation, 4. Historiography (history writing). The results in this study showed 1) The Cimahi was designated as one of the garrisons and in its progress various military developments were then carried out. 2) Intertwined interactions with the settlers in the land of Minahasa led to resistance. The development resulted in the creation of rules to provide soldiers from Minahasa to help Dutch. 3) The role arising from the presence of the Minahasa military in Cimahi in addition to being active in the world of press, also participated in various military events, sports competitions and social activities.Keywords: Military, Cimahi, Minahasa, Colonial.

Abstract

                                              ABSTRACT     This research is about noun phrase pre-modified by adjective phrase. The aims of this research are to identify, classify the types of adjective phrase and to analyze the function of adjective phrase that appear before the head of noun phrase by using the theory of Aarts & Aarts (1982). The method used in this research is descriptive method. There are 70 noun phrases found in the five pages of “Grammys 2020: Big Speeches and Emotional Moments” article, within each noun phrases, there are 47 adjectives which function as pre-modifier. Those adjectives divided into seven types; adjective denoting nationality, adjective denoting substance, adjective denoting colour, adjective denoting age, adjective denoting shape, adjective denoting size, adjective denoting properties. Afterwards, noun phrases which contain adjectives have been analyzed by using a simple tree diagram. The results of the analysis show that each constituent has their own function as suitable as three functions in the structure of noun phrase: Determiner, Modifier and Head. Thereby, it has been proven that the function of adjective phrase is a pre-modifier of the head of noun phrase.Keywords : Syntax, Noun Phrase, Adjective Phrase, Pre-Modifier, Grammys 2020

Abstract

                                               ABSTRACT     This research attempts to describe and analyze the kinship terms of English and Mori Language (Analysis Contrastive). English and Mori language are two different groups of language which have specific patterns of kinship terminologies. Both languages have a special set of terms to indicate the kinship relations. This research aims to compare and contrast the analysis between English and Mori Language and using Lado’s (1957) concept as well as using descriptive method by Burling (1971) in which the kinship terms are characterized as “consanguinal” and “afinal.” The writer also used the method of Wardaugh, Burling and Loundsburry quoted in Leech to find out the similarities and differences between the languages. The data of English were collected from several relevant text books, and severalreliable sources from the internet, and the data of Mori Language were collected from informants through interview. The result of this research shows that both English and Mori Language have similarities in terms of sex, generation and lineage. The difference is that the English kinship terms give distinctions on the sex of all the relatives of in ego, while Morilanguage only has on severalrelatives of in ego. In generation, both of this languages have same generation such as four generations above and below ego.Keywords: Kinship terms of English and Mori Language, Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

                                                  ABSTRACT     This research is entitled “University Students’ Perception on the Influence of Instagram Use in Learning English”. The objectives of this research are to identify the ways in which university students use Instagram to learn English based on the theory of Freeman & Anderson’s (2011) and to analyze the university students’ perception about the influence of Instagram use in learning English based on the theory of Gibson et al (2009). A qualitative method with open-ended-interview is the method used to identify and analyze the university students’ perception on the influence of Instagram use in learning English. The writer collected the data at Sam Ratulangi University, specifically at the English Department in Faculty of Humanities. The result showed that the university students use Instagram to learn English in many ways, since Instagram can be used both as providing teaching resources and enhanced learning experience. Moreover, most of the university students have positive perceptions on the influence of Instagram use in learning English based on the five factors of stereotype, selectivity, self-concept, needs and emotions.Keywords: University students’ perception, Influence of Instagram use, Learning English
