Abstract

ABSTRACT North and South is a social novel written by Elizabeth Gaskell. She describes the life situation and condition in the Era of Victoria. Through the unique story of her, Elizabeth Gaskell successfully represents the real event in the reign of Queen Victoria. This research entitled “Kelas Sosial dalam Novel North and South, Karya Elizabeth Gaskell.” It presents the classification of social class and also the effects of social controversy that are reflected through the novel. The purpose of this study is to identify, describe and analyze the social class classification which is reflected in the novel North and South. It also aims to identify and analyze the effects of that social class classification through the character, lifestyle, and pride. The theories that used in this research are by Wellek and Warren (1949) and Karl Marx (1977). The method which is used in this research is descriptive method by Nazir (1988). In analyzing the data, the writer uses intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The intrinsic approach is used in analyzing characters, social lifestyle, and pride through the people, based on the social classes where they belong. The extrinsic approach is used in analyzing the effects of social classes contradiction to the people in the novel. The result of this research shows the correlation of social class in the Era of Victoria and its effects of social class on society in the novel North and South.   Keywords: Social Class, Era Victoria, Novel, North and South, Elizabeth Gaskell

Abstract

ABSTRACT            This research is an attempt to discover the correlation of English language acquisition and the audio-visual media usage on kindergarten students.  The objectives of this research are to identify wheter the audio-viusal media usage can help the expansion of children English language acquisition and to analyze the factors that can affect the success and failure of the audio-visual usage in children English language acquisition. This study is based on the five principlas for creating effective second language learning environment from Erben, Ban and Castaneda (2009) and second language acquisition theory from Krashen (1985).The quailitative approach is applied in this study and the writer uses Random Sampling technique in choosing the participants. The data collection techniques were observation, documentation, interviews, Likert Scale as the field notes and quitionare. Pre-test and post-test also used to verify the original achievement from the participant and as the instrument to help analyzing the data. The result of this research shows that most participants had shown some progress in English language acquisition trough the audio-visual usage in number 54% on the pre-test and 86.25% on the post-test This research also discovered there are 4 positive factors and 5 negative factors which can affect the success of the audio-visual usage in children English language acquisition.         Keywords: English language, Acquisition, Audio-Visual Media, Correlation, Children

Abstract

ABSTRACT   This  research  entitled “Phrasal  Verbs  in  the  novel  “The  Stars  Shine  Down by  Sidney  Sheldon”  is  written  to  identify  and  analyze  the  phrasal  verbs  in  terms  of  form  and  meaning. The  method  used  is  descriptive  method.  The  data  are  taken  from  the  novel,  and  analyzed  based  on  the  concept  of  Beaumont  dan  Gringer  in  terms  of  form  and  Thomson  Martinet  for  their  meanings. The  writer  finds  that  there  are  four  forms  of  phrasal  verbs  in  the  novel, those  are  the first form  : verb + particle +,  the second form : verb + particle + object and  verb + object + particle,  the tirth form  : Verb + Particle + Object  in  which  verb  cannot  be  separated  from  the  particle,  and the fifth form : Verb + Particle + Preposition. The  writer  also  finds  that  there  are  phrasal  verbs  that  have  more  than  one  meanings  those  are get  up,  put  down,  come  back,  talk  about,  come  up,  finish  up,  keep  up,  make  up,  put  up,  turn  up, set  of  and  give  up. This  research  could  help  the  reader  to  increase  the  knowledge  especially  on phrasal  verbs  and  to  understand phrasal verb in the novel The Stars Shine Down deeply.   Key  words : English phrasal verb,  The  Stars  Shine  Down.

Abstract

ABSTRACT   This skripsi is entitled “Verbs in English and Tobelo Language: A Contrastive Analysis” The objectives of the research are to identify, classify, and analyze the verbs in English and Tobelo language based on the form, function and meaning; and then find out the similarities and difference according to Lado’s theory (1957). The theory used in this research, namely, Frank (1972) and arts and arts (1982). The data in English were collected from English Modern books whereas the data of Tobelo language were collected from informants as primary data and the secondary data were collected from internets. English and Tobelo language derived from different language families. English comes from the indo-European Language family. While Tobelo language from west Papuan language family. Therefore, this language have own characteristic. The result of this research showed that verbs in English and Tobelo language had the similarities in kinds of verbs and the differences between English and Tobelo Language of verbs.in English every kind of we have can get it in Tobelo language we have get some kinds of verb  Key words:  Verbs in English, Tobelo language and Contrastive Analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACT   This research attempts to identify and classify personal pronouns in English and Selaru language. The data are taken from interviewing some informants (native speakers) who was born in Selaru and understand the language and can interact effectively. The identified data are analyzed according to the concept of  Bloomfield and then contrast them by using Lado’s concept. In analyzing the data, the writer uses descriptive method. The problems of this research ore focused on what are the personal pronouns in terms of form and function in English and Selaru language and what are the similarities and differences of personal pronouns in terms of form and function in English and Selaru language. The aims of the research are to identify and classify personal pronouns in English and Selaru language and to find out the similarities as well as dissimilarities of personal pronouns in both languages in terms of form and function. The results of this research shows that English and Selaru language has similarities and dissimilarities. Similarities in English and Selaru language which has the form of the first person, second, third, both singular and plural and dissimilarities in English and Selaru language namely: in English has object, possessive pronoun and   third person singular neutral,whereas in selaru language not found. Abstract

ABSTRAC The aims of this study is to identify, classify and analyze the types of deixis in the novel "Assalamulaikum Beijing" by Asma Nadia and explain why authors use deixis in the novel "Assalamulaikum Beijing". The method used in this study is a qualitative method using qualitative descriptive data and using the theory of Purwo (1983) and Putrayasa (2014). Analysis of the use of deixis in the dialogue contained in the novel, is divided into five sections: deixis persona, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis and social deixis.                Study pragmatic dialogue novel "Assalamualikum Beijing" by Asma Nadia Reviewing about deixis with the study of deixis first person (I, my, me), deixis second person (you, they), deixis third person (she, it), deixis first person to second person (us), deixis person first without the second person (we), second person is more than one (you), deixis third person more than one (they) deixis a locative (here, there), deixis place demonstrative ( this, it is), deixis of time (past, present, earlier), discourse deixis (this, that), social deixis (use a polite word). deixis is often used by authors and frequently appears in this research that deixis persona second category a total of 77 pieces, 74 pieces deixis third person and first person deixis 66 pieces. Abstract

ABSTRACT          This research entitled “Depresi dalam Novel The Lovely Bones arya Alice Sebold” is intended as a requirement to accomplish the bachelor’s degree at Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University Manado. The purposes of this research are to identify and classify the depression symptoms of Salmon’s family. This research also analyzes how Salmon’s families overcome their depression. This study used descriptive method in analyzing the data from the novel. The collecting data used theory of depression by Bhowmik et.al. (2012).  There are 15 depression symptoms from the depression theory. The results show that the Salmon’s family experienced 12 depression symptoms. There are feelings of sadness, loss of interest or pleasure in normal activities, insomnia, changes in appetite, agitation, irritability or angry outbursts, slowed response, decreased concentration, tiredness or loss of energy, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, trouble in thinking, and unexplained physical problems. Jack Salmon experienced 9 symptoms, Abigail Salmon experienced 6 symptoms, and Lindsey Salmon experienced 3 symptoms. Among them experience some of the same symptoms of depression. Because the loss of Susie, they experienced depression. Abstract

Abstract This study entitled Interrogative Sentence in the Novel Murder in The Mews by Agatha Christie is used to identify, classify and analyze the interrogative sentence found in the novel. The data have been collected from the dialogs among the characters found in the novel. The data then analyzed based on Aarts and Aarts concept (1982). In analyzing data the descriptive method is used. The result shows that interrogative sentence found in the novel are yes/no question, question tag, and wh-question. Three kinds of interrogative sentences found in the novel, there are also found . interrogative sentence without question word, one or two words followed by question mark in terms of its function in communication which can function as question. ─────────────────────────────────────────────────── Keywords: Interrogative sentence, grammatical analysis, novel Murder in the Mewsby Agatha Christie.

Abstract

ABSTRACT  This study entitles “Simbol-simbol Religius Katolik Dalam Misa Requiem: Analisis Semiotik”. A symbol is a sign that shows the natural relationship between signifier and signified. The relationship between signifier and signified is an arbitrary and it is based on the convention (deal) of society. The religious symbol distinguished from other symbols. It is a representation of something that totally exist outside the conceptually. Religious symbol refers to the ultimate reality that is implicit in religious acts, to what concerns us in the end.  This study is an attempt to identify, classify, and analyze the religious symbol in requiem mass by the Catholics. The data are collected through the writer’s experience which follow the whole of requiem mass and based on the order of requiem mass book’s. The writer uses the theory of John Riches in Dillistone to identify, classify, and analyze the data as symbol which states that religious symbol is a symbol that related to the special community or inside the certain communities. The writer uses a descriptive method of Nazir. The results of this study show that based on the theory of Dillistone, there are four kinds of religious symbol in requiem mass. Those are, the symbols that reveal to the general visual of God, the symbols that reveal to the general visual of human, the symbols that reveal to the general visual of world, and the symbols that reveal to the general visual of reality. The meaning of religious symbol in requiem mass is a way of communicaton among the religious community and God by the symbols that used in a mass such as verbal and non verbal symbol to tell a purpose and pray.  The writer hopes that this study will help the reader to understand about semiotics especially on symbol as one of many ways to communicate. Abstract

ABSTRACT            This study which is entitled “The Images of Death depicted in Phillis Wheatley Poems” focusing on the types of imagery that are appeared in every selected poem written by Phillis Wheatley. The writer chooses five poems by Phillis Wheatley that related with death as the themes of the poems and analyzes them by using intrinsic approach to discover types of imagery of every poem. This study uses the theory of Wellek and Warren (1976) about the relationship of literature and life.  The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the types of imagery that are appeared in every selected poem written by Phillis Wheatley. The result of this study can be summarized as follows: there are five types of imagery which are found in five selected poems written by Phillis Wheatley, that are : visual imagery, tactile imagery, auditory imagery, kinesthetic imagery and organic imagery. Types of imagery depicted in Phillis Wheatley’s selected poems are dominated by visual imagery, auditory imagery and kinesthetic imagery. Keyword : Poems, Intrinsic Approach, Imagery, Death, Phillis Wheatley
