Abstract

The surge in the use of English has escalated in the higher education sector due to the drive of advancing university ranking world-wide.  Major universities from expanding circle countries, including Indonesia, are motivated to send their academic staff and students for short-term mobility programs organized by top world-class universities which are normally situated in inner-circle countries, as faculty and student mobility is essential for developing international quality education. Standardized English proficiency tests are the tools for selecting candidates, as native speaker’s English is still regarded as the norm for lingua academica. Therefore, those who receive the access for mobility are always the same people who have already received some academic experiences overseas. With this in mind, we need to challenge the ideology of native speakerism and start embracing the concept of multilinguality. Yet, this is not an easy task to change the deep-rooted ideology. Forty-nine out of 57 college students (82%) of a reputable English Department in Indonesia, for example, still believed in native speaker standards, although they were aware that they could not attain them. In fact, based on socio-psychological and neurobiological evidence, multilinguality unnecessarily impairs intelligibility.

A theory proposed by Hoffman (1991) was used as a guidance to achieve the objectives. The final findings concluded that the seven reasons from the theory are completely found in the data. Also, Alexander Thian’s intention of clarifying the speech content for his followers on Twitter as interlocutors is the most prominent reason with 38% occurrences of total data. The particular reason found in 19 out of 50 data. Among the reasons, the least of all is the reason for quoting somebody else which only has 4% occurrences.

Abstract

This study intended to use “The Yellow Wallpaper” as a case study to demonstrate how illness narratives can be used to form an empathetic connection with respect to patients’ anxiety, predicaments, trauma, or other health problems and, further, to reach self-identification and justification. To achieve the research objectives, the study used Charon’s illness narratives regarding attention → representation → affiliation and Engel, Zarconi, Pethel, et al.’s six narrative skills as a framework to examine how the nameless female narrator struggles to reach her own female identification and subjectivity in a gender-discriminated patriarchal hegemony, but gradually becomes hysterical, losing her mind, and finally, going insane.

Abstract

Adult learners are conscientious learners. They are aware of their education in many ways: what they want to learn, goals they want to achieve, and how they will achieve their goals. What makes adult learners different is that they are expected to have autonomy in their own learning. However, not everyone can show their autonomous learning skills due to various factors, one of which is their experience in the teaching and learning process in the classroom. This research describes the application of project-based learning activities to foster autonomous learning skills among university students in the online classroom setting. The study is designed as qualitative research in which data is collected from online classroom observations and semi-structured interviews conducted with selective participants. There are 60 participants who are divided into two groups. The results of the data collection were analysed using a framework developed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014) which is divided into three stages: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The result shows that project-based learning activity develops student skills to be autonomous learners.

Abstract

The research was conducted to find out the perceptions of ELT students towards the use of WhatsApp as a Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) device for learning English during the COVID-19 pandemic. The researcher distributed a survey which was filled out by 225 English Language Teaching (ELT) students of Universitas Negeri Malang, Indonesia. The data analysis results show that the students find WhatsApp convenient features due to its connectivity, instant, portability, spontaneity, personalized, and ubiquity. They think that the app is useful for bite-size learning, blended learning, collaborative learning, various learning strategies, learning autonomy, task-based learning, asynchronous and synchronous learning, facilitating interactivity, and for mediating learning. They are also content to use WhatsApp for self-study and improving learning motivation.
