Abstract

This article investigates the utilization of spiritual imagery in Kahf’s advertisement that continuously uses spiritual imagery in their advertisements. This article aims to reveal the utilization of spiritual imagery in advertisement that can attach and represent the brand’s identity to the audience. The authors gained the data by selecting textual and image components inside Kahf’s advertisements. The authors elaborating the findings using the theory of Popular Culture and connecting them to previous studies. This article focuses on discovering the use of spiritual imagery in framing spirituality in advertising to attach the audience. The result of this study shows that spiritual imagery such as the use of spiritual words, symbols, also the selection of images, and models in Kahf’s advertisements play important role in framing spirituality. The utilization of all of the spiritual imagery effectively leads Kahf’s advertisements to attach specific audiences and represent their brand’s identity.

Abstract

Because of the advanced development of technology, people can now interact with others easily by any means of communication, such as text messages and telephone calls. One of the most popular applications that has messaging and call features is WhatsApp. WhatsApp messaging feature is also used by the lecturers, students, and staff of English Department at Universitas Abdurachman Saleh Situbondo for sharing both academic and non-academic information. The group members communicate using Indonesian, English, and the mix of the two. This current research analyzed the types of code mixing used by the members of the group and the reasons why they used code mixing. The data of this descriptive qualitative research are the utterances containing code mixing made by the members of the group. Muysken’s theory was used to analyze the types of code mixing and Bhatia’s was used to study the reasons for using code mixing. The result of this research shows that insertion is the onl type of code mixing which appeared in the group, while situational factor is the most used reason why the code mixing occurred.

Abstract

This research examines Keiko Furukura’s character development influenced by the convenience store as the main spatial setting in Sayaka Murata’s novel entitled Convenience Store Woman (2018). The study is a literary criticism which uses the theory of New Criticism, especially its argument that centers on the analysis of the main character in the story. This research proposes that spatial settings can become one of most determinant factors to affect the character’s development in the story. The finding proves that the store is influential to the main character’s development as it plays as the character’s life-anchor to evaluate, measure or even, eventually, decide how worthy the main character is as a human.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find the formal and casual register used by the characters in the movie “Run” 2020. This research uses the qualitative type of research and uses the descriptive approach to analyze and identify the data obtained. The data were analyzed using Martin Joos’s theory of register. Based on the result there are 10 pieces of data obtained from the movie. The data identified as 2 data (20%) is formal register and 8 data (80%) is casual register. The casual register dominates the result because in the movie there is no such circumstance that requires to use formal register. The investigation shows that field and tenor factors influence how the register is used in communication by interlocutors.

Abstract

Annotating is an active reading strategy for improving comprehension and retention of information. However, it is not always clear how the EFL learner understand and use it. The purpose of this paper is to explore students practice on annotation as their reading strategy. The participants are a class of EFL students enrolled in Reading and Writing for Academic Purposes in a public university in Jambi, Indonesia. The data were collected through the students’ written reflection and classroom discussion. The qualitative analyses on the data revealed that the students have adequate understanding about annotation, and they use it to achieve their reading goals. However, some of them stated that they lack practice, and their annotating skills are insufficient. Therefore, ample time and effort for practicing the strategy are needed to help students in their learning.

Abstract

The present study was action research to overcome the disengagement among EFL student teachers by using attendance questions. The participants included 37 student teachers who attended the ELT Methods course in Google Classroom. In the second half of the semester, they responded to attendance questions at the beginning of each session to increase their motivation and improve their engagement in learning. To collect the data, the teacher educator kept reflective journals and conducted participatory observation. The student teachers completed a questionnaire on learner engagement, followed by semi-structured interviews. The results indicated the intervention effectively revived the student teachers’ engagement. The improvement occurred in the behavioral, affective, and cognitive areas, but the affective engagement was the most favorably affected. The reasons for the improved engagement from the student teachers’ perspectives provided compelling insight into the connection between the attendance questions, motivation, and learner engagement. Based on these findings, the implication for the EFL teacher training was presented.
