Abstract

The current research seeks the variety of nicknames producing by the students at State Senior High School 1 Model Muaro Jambi. In conducting the present research, the descriptive qualitative desinged is employed where in the data are gathered by mean of  observation, note-taking, and interview. The students’ nicknames are categorized into two types: (1) nicknames directly related to their formal full name and (2) nicknames are not related to their formal full name. Such nicknames are constructed by five rules (Liao, 2000), i.e, (R1) affectionate names (duplication of one syllable/ character), (R2) one character of the full name (prefix), (R3) homophonic wordplay (alliterate, rhymed character and an object/ term associated with it), (R7) describe the person, ability, figure, fondness, etc., opposite quality and (R8) given by relatives. The analysis also shows that most students’ nicknames which are constructed by (R3) homophonic wordplay.Nicknames among students are employed to show an intimacy among their members in which the construction of the nicknames as a result of their creation. Some of them proud with their nicknames and others do not feel comfort.

Abstract

Linguistics Description of English is a new subject in the curriculum of English Education Study Program in the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education in Jambi University. Hence, the material for this subject is not yet available. Therefore, this research aims at developing a prototype of teaching materials for Linguistics Description of English course. By designing the prototype of teaching materials for this course, the researchers expected that lecturers who will teach this subject will not find difficulties in teaching this course. Besides, the use of materials which have been designed based on students’ need and linguistic lecturers’ discussion is anticipated to be able to encourage students to be more active in teaching and learning process. Thus, the choice of the topics is suited to the characteristics of the students and drew from the result of the need analysis questionnaire and forum group discussion (FGD) with the lecturers. This research utilized research and development design, based on the theory developed by Borg and Gall (1983). The result of the research is the prototype of the teaching materials for Linguistics Description of English course.

Abstract

Writing scientific article is one of the ways to develop teacher professionalism. However, writing scientific article remains a problem for some Islamic High School Teachers. To explore about the problem, a preliminary research was conducted. Focus Group Discussion was used to gather the data. The result showed that most of the Islamic High School teachers who became the participants of the research never publish a scientific article because they get difficulties not only in exploring the ideas but also in writing the article itself. The teachers admitted that writing scientifically is not their habit. Thus, encouraging those teachers to write scientifically is highly necessary and supportive atmosphere among teachers should be developed. It takes time to develop a belief that writing and publishing scientific article would help the participant teachers developing their professionalism.

Abstract

The aims of this research were to discover how the communicative competence is represented and to examine how intercultural communicative competence is promoted in EFL textbook “Bahasa Inggris” for Twelfth Grade. Dealing with textbook analysis, this research applied content analysis with a qualitative approach. The data were analyzed based on five steps; observation, marking checklist, classifying, coding, and interpretation. The finding of research revealed that the learning task in the textbook represented four component of communicative competence and predominated by Linguistic. Moreover, the four elements of Intercultural Competence were well covered but less then the other competence, with the dominance of knowledge aspects. Thus, based on this finding, hopefully the textbook will be developed more to assist students in building their Intercultural Communicative Competence.

Abstract

Levelling reading comprehension may help students learning and teacher course designing. This study attempts to portray the level of EFL reading comprehension in a public university in Jambi, Indonesia. The participants were 78 EFL learners who were registered in the academic year 2020-2021. The data were collected through administering a set of adapted reading test and calculated based on the indicator of the scoring system and criteria. These data were classified into each level of reading comprehension which is described in the form of percentage and presented through diagram and chart. The major findings of this study reveal that. 1) there were 77 or (99%) participants can complete most of the literal test items and they just achieved literal level of comprehension of reading skill. 2) there were 24 or (31%) participants were able to answer all inferential test items successfully and they just reach inferential level of reading comprehension. 3) there were 19 or (24%) participants can give their answer critically and they just obtained a critical level of reading comprehension. It is interpreted that numerous students were still in the position of the literal level which is regarded as a very low or basic level of reading comprehension. So, it is strongly recommended that EFL learners at Universitas Jambi require an intensive practice of reading to achieve a highest level of reading comprehension.

Abstract

The concerns about globalization are undoubtedly in this era. Every individual has experienced globalization and cultural diversity. Along with that, every individual must be able to adapt to those of different cultures, backgrounds, and behaviors. Furthermore, being able to comprehend other cultures is crucial where various new cultures have been introduced through globalization which requires us to adjust our behavior towards these cultures. In line with this issue, in this research, the researcher focused on analyzing the intercultural sensitivity level of FKIP students in Universitas Jambi. In this study, the researcher used a quantitative approach, and in the research design, the researcher applied the survey method with descriptive statistic analysis. The research participants were selected using purposive sampling. The data were gathered via a questionnaire. The result of this study showed that the student's level of intercultural sensitivity is moderate. This result also demonstrates that students have acquired a degree of intercultural sensitivity that is quite satisfactory.

Abstract

Annotating is an active reading strategy for improving comprehension and retention of information. However, it is not always clear how the EFL learner understand and use it. The purpose of this paper is to explore students practice on annotation as their reading strategy. The participants are a class of EFL students enrolled in Reading and Writing for Academic Purposes in a public university in Jambi, Indonesia. The data were collected through the students’ written reflection and classroom discussion. The qualitative analyses on the data revealed that the students have adequate understanding about annotation, and they use it to achieve their reading goals. However, some of them stated that they lack practice, and their annotating skills are insufficient. Therefore, ample time and effort for practicing the strategy are needed to help students in their learning.

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) ini bertujuan untuk melatih siswa kelas XI Sekolah Menengah Atas Swasta Al-Mahdaliyah Kota Jambi dalam melakukan note-taking secara konvensional dan digital. Note- taking konvensional berarti mencatat menggunakan kertas dan pena, sedangkan note-taking digital adalah mencatat dengan menggunakan aplikasi pada gawai. Dengan memberikan pelatihan keterampilan note-taking yang efektif diharapkan dapat membantu siswa mengembangkan keterampilan mencatat untuk meningkatkan kinerja akademik mereka, tidak mudah lupa pada pelajaran, dan mengembangkan critical thinking (karena bisa menganalisis informasi dan mengaplikasikannya dalam buku catatan). Selain itu, siswa bisa berlatih mengembangkan teknik note-taking mereka sendiri agar menjadi lebih efektif. Metode yang diberikan dalam kegiatan PkM adalah pelatihan, modelling, dan tindak lanjut berupa pengimplementasian note-taking dalam pembelajaran. Kemudian, angket refleksi kegiatan diisi siswa setelah pemberian materi dan praktik. Hasil analisis kualitatif pada data angket tersebut menunjukkan bahwa siswa memilik persepsi yang positif terhadap materi pelatihan note-taking dan mulai mengenal teknik note-taking secara digital. Mayoritas siswa mengatakan akan menggunakan teknik yang diajarkan untuk membuat catatan dalam pembelajaran yang mereka lakukan.

Abstract

Pandemi covid-19 telah mengubah proses pembelajaran baik pada sisi belajar siswa ataupun sisi mengajar guru. Hal ini dikarenakan mayoritas belajar dilakukan dengan moda online atau dalam jaringan (daring). Siswa dituntut agar lebih bertanggung jawab pada proses belajarnya karena ketiadaan guru disamping mereka walau mereka tetap diberi penjelasan dan tugas secara daring agar tetap termonitor proses belajarnya. Guru dituntut agar menguasai pendekatan pembelajaran yang sesuai dengan perubahan yang terjadi, satu diantaranya adalah pendekatan pembelajaran self-directed learning. Berdasarkan hal tersebut, kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (PPM) FKIP Universitas Jambi telah dilaksanakan dengan tujuan untuk memberi pelatihan dan pemahaman mengenai pendekatan belajar Self-Directed Learning (SDL) kepada guru SMPN 1 Merangin. Dengan teknik penjelasan, pemberian contoh dan modelling, dan diakhiri dengan sesi tanya jawab, kegiatan pelatihan ini telah terlaksana dengan baik. Tindak lanjut dan refleksi dari peserta juga telah didapatkan melalui angket yang disebar melalui google form. Secara umum guru-guru peserta pelatihan telah mengerti konsep dasar dan karakteristik SDL. Dengan pemahaman tersebut mereka diharapkan bisa memaksimalkan potensi penerapan SDL dalam kegiatan belajar mengajar nantinya.

Abstract

Pelaksanan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan keahlian guru SDIT Cahaya Hati Jambi dalam menyusun rencana pembelajaran tematik berdasarkan pengutan pendidikan karakter. Hal ini sejalan dengan peraturan presiden Nomor 87 Tahun 2017 tentang Pengutan Pendidikan Karakter (PPK). Pengetahuan bagaimana menyusun dan memasukkan poin-poin berbasis pendidikan karakter ke dalam RPP (Rencana Pelaksaan Pembelajaran) adalah penting bagi guru-guru di sekolah tersebut. Implikasi dari keakuratan poin-poin pendidikan karakter tersebut dapat memandu guru-guru di sekolah tersebut dalam proses pembelajaran para siswa berdasarkan jenjang kelasnya. Dengan adanya RPP tematik yang baik dapat membantu guru mengembangkan pembentukan karakter siswa dan juga kemampuan menyusun dan meramu nilai-nilai karakter yang tepat akan meningkantakan kompetensi dan profesionalisme guru dalam proses pembelajaran di kelas.
