Abstract

This study discusses the historical process of cotton introduction and commercialization in Maumere, Sikka Regency, Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, from 1912 to 1943 using political economy perspective. In the early 20th century, the Netherlands enacted the 1870 Agrarian Law. Flores was one of the areas officially colonized by the Dutch. A number of crop commodities were introduced, including the establishment of plantations, to participate in global trade traffic. Cotton is one of the plants introduced to Flores for the benefit of the world’s textile industry. The people of Flores were forced to plant, but along the way, the plants did not succeed in providing surplus value to trading companies, let alone to local people. This study was conducted based on literature. This study finds that the power relations between the Dutch East Indies government, trading companies, and local rulers, led to the forced commercialization. This interwoven political economy relationship had an impact on the existence of a primitive and capital accumulation mechanism. The mechanism causes local residents to lose land and shelter and some of them fall into forced labor to serve the feudal elite and colonial rulers.

Abstract

This study discusses gender division of labor in agroforestry at Tarumajaya Village, upstream of Citarum Watershed. This study aims to describe the division of labor mechanism of agroforestry farmers based on the anthropology of gender perspective. The manifestation of gender can be seen from the mechanism of division labor on every kind of land-use system. Agroforestry is an intensive land-use system that combines crops, woods, and/or livestock in one intensive land to obtain economic-ecology harmonization. Agroforestry was introduced by the government through a top-down approach, by Peraturan Presiden No. 15/2018 about the Acceleration of Pollution Control and Damage to the Citarum River Basin, which is used to conserve the Citarum Watershed. Unfortunately, agroforestry had unfavorable condition due to the clash with crops habits and subsistence economic needs. This research applied ehnographic methods and the data were collected through literature study, observation, and in-depth interview. The data were analyzed using Gender Harvard Analytical Framework. This study found that the division of labor in agroforestry households is negotiable. Men and women have the opportunities to work together in the system. However, gender blind introduction of agroforestry only made women as cheap wage labor. They are being subordinated and alienated by the system. They don’t have equal access and control to the technology, information, and market. These problems occur because gender intersects with various factors such as culture and religion, demography, economy, formal law, social class, and politics. Therefore, agroforestry needs to take a gender approach to get optimum results.

In their activities, the LBG do not aim to repair or to beautify the existing heritage and history, but they reintroduce it through various activities instead. Their effort receive diverse responses from society both rejection and acceptance. Meanwhile, the discourse carried by LBG indirectly serves as a non-physical revitalization project on cultural heritage and an effort to realize the ideas of the advancement of Banten’s culture.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic, which has occurred in Indonesia since March 2020, has created a crisis in society. The state began to take appropriate policies in handling the Covid-19 pandemic. The alignment of state’s policies in the economic or health sectors has been questioned. This research aims to examine the state’s practices in  delivering aid to members of society and the incoherent images about the state which results from the practice. The relationship between the state and the society was analyzed through Migdal’s framework. This autoethnographic research was conducted in Karangwuni Village, Polokarto District, Sukoharjo Regency. Data were collected through participatory observations, archival study, and in-depth interviews with various members of social groups, such as village chief, midwives, and residents who are directly affected by Covid-19. The result of this research indicated that the village has become an arena for domination contests by the state and the society. The state’s practice of delivering aid to members of society through the village government has led village authorities, health workers, and the aid beneficiaries to construct various images about the state. Apparently, the state is not the dominant actor. The image of the state that was originally coherent has been challenged as both the state and the society tend to pull out each other.
