"SANGKHAKALA" refers to the shell horns that blown regularly to convey certain messages. In accordance with the meaning, this journal expected to become an instrument in the dissemination of archaeological information to the public which is published on an ongoing basis. Berkala Arkeologi Sangkhakala is a peer-reviewed journal published biannual by the Balai Arkeologi Sumatera Utara in May and November. The first edition was published in 1997 and began to be published online in an e-journal form using the Open Journal System tool in 2015. Berkala Arkeologi Sangkhakala aims to publish research papers, reviews and studies covering the disciplines of archeology, anthropology, history, ethnography, and culture in general.

Abstract

AbstractArchaelogical data about prehistoric burial inside of prehistoric cave or rock-shelter site in Indonesia has been found in some sites that spread at some different provinces, such as Central Java, West Java, East Java, East Borneo, and also South Sumatra. Now, there is addition one that found in Loyang(cave) Mendale and Loyang Ujung Karang in Takengon, Central Aceh, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam.

Abstract

AbstractsBuried is one of some activities in human life, which have been doing if someone died. In Indonesia, since arrival of Islamic influence, the prehistoric buried in several places have been developed and change with new phenomenon. In other site, some places have indication with two signs of prehistoric and Islamic buried. That facts, we can find in Bawahparit site that have location on Kototinggi District, Limapuluhkoto regent’s, West Sumatera. In this site, we could find a hundred of the up right stones as a sign of buried and human skeletons were setting in cavity and putting down in northwest-southeast orientation. It is the same with Islamic buried.

Abstract

AbstractPakpak community belief that there is spirit have control their land, Beraspati ni Tano. To show their mutual respect to that, they make lizard or flying lizard ornament on their traditional house and also symbolize that with lizard or flying lizard stone statue. At the rice planting season, they run the ritual for plentiful harvest hoping.

Abstract

AbstractTjong A Fie’s residence is one of the monument of the Colonial buildings are situated on Jl. Ahmad Yani, no. 105, Kesawan, Medan, North Sumatera. The building was built in 1885 to 1900. This paper aims to examine architectural styles that affect Tjong A Fie’s house. Scope of the study include: the pattern layout, layout, construction, decorative ornaments used in. The approach used is qualitative descriptive research. Data collection using direct observation in the field, but it also carried an interview. To deepen the analysis is conducted literature study which related to the topic under study. Sources of data used in this study is artifact and textual. Architectural style Tjong A Fie's house is the result of acculturation of Chinese architecture, Colonial and Malay.

Abstract

AbstractComputers were created to facilitate and accelerate the work of man. Archaeology as a discipline that is struggling with the database and the document will certainly take advantage of this technology. Many data are currently processed using a computer. However, software prices are still expensive, thus make some crucial software being pirated to make it functional and can be used. Open source software has been emerged as an attractive alternative for used as needed. Through explorative-descriptive method, in this case will be presented of the use of open source softwarefor archaeology.

Abstract

AbstractTrought the lithic tool, the indication of cultural periodization and the development of culture could be refered to. Also, by the finding of a lithic tool in Loyang Mendale site. It can indicate time and cultural periodization which was growing at the time. Those understanding can be achieved by doing the description of the morphology and the technology on lithic equipment. In addition to the description, the comparison object can be done trought the lithic tool-making stages of processing compared with lithic tool around Loyang Mendale site that has a contemporary culture. Based on morphological and lithic technology in a tool of cultural sites hoabinh lowland and highland hoabinh culture sites produced relativaly similar morphology. In addition, the same technology as the technology during mesolithic culture that developed on the Loyang Mendale site has compatility with the hoabinh culture.

Abstract

AbstractArchaeology not only describing about the past, but also present. The form of cultural transformation process which describe the process of archaeological record disposition in the post-depositoanal factors, one of example form describe from present. Cultural transformation of archaeological record was found in Benteng Putri Hijau site. Precipitation position of archaeological data and stratigraphy can give information about cultural transformation data and contexts remain found in archaeological deposition.
