Abstract

Severe protein calorie malnutrition is often accompanied by vitamin A deficiency and intercurrent infections. These three conditions have a synergistic action on each other. The younger the infant, the more severe are the hazards of nutritional deficiency. Severe malnutrition in early infancy results in: Direct hazards to the infant consisting of: Retardation of physical development. Retardation of brain development with subsequent impairment of learning ability. Decreased resistance against infections. PCM is a predisposing factor to diarrhoea, with aggravated the malnutrition. Blindness due to vitamin A deficiency.

Abstract

One hundred and sixteen babies were given electrocardiogram examination on the 1st day until the 7th day of birth as well as the examination at 3 and 6 months. There were definite changes in the heart rate, P duration, PR interval, T axis, and T wave of the right precordial leads on the 1st day, especially on the 1st hours of birth. These changes may be caused by physiological adjustment after birth and anatomical changes like the closing of foramen ovale and ductus arteriosus. There were changes on the second day and thereafter caused by increased activities of the left side of the heart. Observations were made on ECG examination on fullterm normal babies on the 1st week of birth. Genetic factors should not be ignored (Sutin and Schrire, 1964) as data gathered in this study have shown some differences from data gathered in other studies.

Abstract

The picture of congestive heart failure in diphtheric myocarditis was mainly determined by poor general condition, hepatic enlargement + epigastric pain, dyspnea. Basal rales and peripheral edema were not observed. Cardiomegaly on X-ray examination supported the diagnosis. Congestive heart failure as a complication of diphtheric myocarditis occurred in 31.2% - 52% of cases with severe ECG changes and only in 5% of cases with ST depression or T wave changes. Of 29 cases with congestive heart failure only 3 survived. Apparently good results of digitalis treatment were obtained when only gallop rhythm, as an early sign of heart failure, was found. Extensive myocardial damage by diphtheria toxin may explain why no beneficial effect of digitalis treatment was obtained. Prophylactic digitalization before signs of congestive heart failure appeared, as suggested by several authors; was not performed in this study.

Abstract

ECG abnormalities were found in 39 (45.3%) out of 86 diphtheria cases; 29 cases (33.6%) had significant myocardial involvement. Myocardial involvement comprised minor changes in 24 cases and major changes in 5 cases. Twenty two cases of myocardial involvement occurred in the first week of hospitalization, while 7 cases occurred after the first week of hospitalization. The ECG abnormalities of the 29 cases disappeared within 1 to 2 weeks or after 3 weeks. Minor changes have a good prognosis, while major changes, especially an AV block, have a poor prognosis.

Abstract

Ninety-one cases out of 102 diphtheritic children admitted to the University of Gadjah Mada Hospital were studied, correlating enzyme levels (SGOT and SGPT) with ECG findings. The results showed that there was a correlation between the SOOT value and the severity of the ECO abnormalities. Beside ECO, the determination of serum transaminase should be considered as an adjunct laboratory examination in evaluating the diagnosis and prognosis of diphtheritic myocarditis.

Abstract

An analysis of the clinical picture on 37 cases of patent ductus arteriosus proved by operation is presented, including the chest X-ray and electrocardiographic findings. In 13 cases preoperative hemodynamic studies were necessary to establish the diagnosis, although in most of the cases it could be based on clinical findings only. During the years 1968 to 1973, 37 patients were operated upon for patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) at the Cardiologic Center, Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Medical School University of Indonesia, Jakarta. This paper is meant to analyze the clinical picture and in some instances, the hemodynamic findings of those 37 patients.

Abstract

Three cases of Levocardia and situs inversus atria were reported. The clinical diagnosis of the first two cases were based on clinical signs and laboratory findings which were confirmed by Electrocardiography, Chest Xray, heart catheterization and angiography. The third case died before further investigations could be done. Classification, management and prognosis were also discussed.

Abstract

Procedures and other arrangements concerning adoption at Dr. Kariadi Hospital, Semarang, is discussed in this paper. From 1969 to the first three months of 1974, 41 children with ages ranging between 5 days and 3 years old have been adopted. A visit to 18 of them showed that their health condition was satisfactory; a psychological evaluation also indicated that no mental retardation was observed, excepting that their I.Q. level was difficult to determine. Five children received official approval from the court, one from the notary and the others from the local District Head (Lurah/Camat).

Abstract

From a cross sectional study on height and weight of children from 6 to 14 years of age, percentile curves were drawn. This study was done in Bandung during a period of 10 months in 1973. The subjects were obtained from 215 elementary schools and 17 Kindergartens and 65,809 pupils were measured. Only 15,099 children were selected for this study based on their birthdates. The 1Oth, 30th, 50th, 70th and 90th percentiles, mean and standard deviations were calculated and plotted in graphs. Data within the range + and - 2 SD were considered normal. Data in the category between + 2 SD and 90th percentile were considered "Tall or heavy", between 30th and 70th percentiles "Average" and between 10th percentile and -2 SD "Short or light". Data outside the limits of -+- 2 SD were considered extremes. These graphs can be recommended in following the growth of children transversally as well as longitudinally.
