Abstract

This study aims to know the level of motivation in speaking class and to investigate the significant relationship between students’ motivation and speaking achievement. The subject of this study was thirty-four students in the third semester of English Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Twenty-five statements of questionnaires inquiring about motivation levels and speaking achievement were used as the primary data sources. Motivation type was divided into 2, instrumental and integrative motivation, and the data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative. Speaking achievements from the lecturer were divided into excellent, good, average, low, and very low. Pearson Correlation was used to describe the relationship between students’ motivation and achievement. The result showed that students' motivation level was high and had no significant relationship between students’ motivation and their achievement in speaking class, so motivation is not the only factor that can increase students' speaking achievement. This study illustrates that speaking lecturers need to find another factor to boost students' speaking achievement.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to briefly describe the theories and concepts found in Interstellar films. The film's concepts and theories became interesting for those who watched it, as many such concepts and theories were difficult to solve. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive study, which is the researcher analyzing the reality or events in this film. The data that will be collected will be done by watching the movie more carefully and then recording what is related to the theories and concepts that are in the discussion and then searching for a journal or video related to what is discussed. The results of this study suggest that there are several theories about the film. These are The Gravity Anomaly, The Wormhole, The Theory of Relativity of Time and Space, The Gargantua, and The Tesseract Theory. Interstellar is an interesting film to watch because the theories and concepts contained learning that could be learned.

Abstract

Social media has become the new way to socialize, not only between people from different cities nor regions, but it also lets us socialize on a worldwide scale. As it lets us socialize on a wide scale, students can take advantage of it by socializing with native speakers to improve their conversation skill. Social media creates a fun environment that removes the burden of students to practice conversation as it does in common ways. The researcher wants to know the effectiveness of HelloTalk and the role-play method for improving students’ conversation skill. Therefore this study also wants to find out the significance comparison between HelloTalk app and the role-play method for students’ conversation skill. This study used a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental research design. The study used two groups as its subjects: a control group that implemented the role-play method to assist students in conversation practice and an experimental group that integrated HelloTalk as part of its treatment. The research shows this method works well for developing students’ conversation skill. Compared to roleplay method, HelloTalk App is more effective to improve students’ pronunciation, intonation, grammar, and confidence. The experimental class students who received treatment using the HelloTalk App had their conversation skill improved more significantly compared to the role-play method as the control group.

Abstract

The difference in the pronunciation of English words by the Banyumasan people with English standards is fascinating. This happens because of the uniqueness of the Banyumas dialect. This research aims to describe the various errors, the frequency of errors occurring, and the factors that are thought to cause errors made by respondents from Banyumasan in English pronunciation. The subjects of this research were people who used the Banyumasan dialect, and the sample for this research was 15 people. In this research, the researchers used a qualitative descriptive method. Data collection was also carried out using questionnaires and voice recordings. The researchers analyzed the data using the matching method. The frequency of errors made between the pronunciation of consonants, vowels, and diphthongs that often occur include errors in the pronunciation of the consonant /d/ around (60%) and in the pronunciation of the consonant /g/ around (47%), consonant /b / around (20%), vowel /ɛ/ around (53%), vowel /ɪ/ as much as (47%), and finally the pronunciation of the diphthong /eɪ/ around (60%). Factors that cause errors include mother tongue interference, habits, and input errors, resulting in respondents' lack of understanding of English language rules.

Abstract

This research discusses the role of speech acts in communication, which are classified into five categories by Searle. Qualitative methods and literature research are used to explore the impact of a socio-pragmatic approach in language learning on children's development. Factors such as biological evolution, cognitive factors and the environment also influence children's language development, with parents playing an important role in providing positive stimuli to develop children's language skills. Socio pragmatics, as a branch of linguistics, highlights how social factors influence language use in communication contexts. Language development in children is considered crucial because through language, children can develop their social abilities. Parents and educators have an important role in supporting children's language development, in line with Society Activity Theory which emphasizes the importance of social interaction in language learning. Speech acts, as a means of conveying ideas and feelings, are a key element in children's communication and language learning proccess

Abstract

This study was aimed to explore the teachers’ perceptions and practices of infusing critical thinking skills into reading instruction to improve students’ reading comprehension. It also identified the perceived challenges that hinder the practices of critical thinking skills in reading classes. The research utilized a descriptive survey design and an explanatory mixed-methods approach to collect data. The study involved 40 out of 52 English instructors and three reading texts teachers used to practice reading comprehension questions were randomly selected. Besides, texts used for quiz, mid-exam and final examination were purposely collected to evaluate the text to which the teachers integrated critical thinking skills classroom reading activities and assessments. Quantitative data was gathered through questionnaires, while qualitative data was obtained through document analysis. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS version 24, and content analysis was used for the qualitative data. The survey results revealed that teachers had moderate level of perceptions of integrating critical thinking skills (m=3.59) and identified that student-related challenges (m= 3.76) as significant obstacles to practice critical thinking skills. The results of document analysis indicated that critical thinking skills practiced rarely. It can be concluded that teachers' conceptual perception at moderate level was not adequate to infuse critical thinking skills into reading instruction to enhance students' reading comprehension. Therefore, it is crucial to train teachers in the integration of critical thinking skills into an interactive reading curriculum to motivate and engage students and help them understand the reading skills more deeply. Further research is recommended to explore the impact of teachers' perceptions of critical thinking skills on students' reading comprehension

Abstract

This study focuses on the character and characterization of Janeck and Tony Gardner in Kazuo Ishiguro’s short story “Crooner”. The short story is featured as the first short story in Ishiguro’s short story collection titled Nocturnes: Five Stories of Music and Nightfall. “Crooner” is a story of a “gypsy” or freelance musician named Janeck who helps an iconic American singer named Tony Gardner to serenade his wife. The story takes place in Venice, Italy. The data are gathered by conducting library research. The data are the short story “Crooner,” related theories and previous studies taken from books and journals. The data are analyzed using the theory of character, and the theory of characterization. The result of this study shows the characters of Janeck in the story are friendly, hospitable, enthusiastic, curious, and professional. Meanwhile, the characters of Tony Gardner in the story are kind, assertive, romantic, and realistic or sensible
