Abstract

The number of women in the medical field today is probably much evolved compared to when this science was first introduced in Indonesia. In the colonial period, the number of women entering into the medical field was minimal. Patriarchal values restricted women’s access to education, including the education of doctors, nurses, midwives and pharmacists. Becoming a doctor was considered to be against women’s ‘nature’. The STOVIA medical school at the turn of the 20th century, for example, was discriminatory towards women. The medical profession was seen as suitable only for men. Using a historical perspective, this study seeks to uncover the experience womens in the medical field in Indonesia. The achievements of women to date were inspired by the struggles of thewomen in the past.

Abstract

Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) continued to decline from secondary schools to universities level, as well as in lab, teaching and research policy-making and technology. This is triggered by the absence and minority of women in policy and decision-making regarding research in science and technology. Women’s leadership is very low in the area of energy use, adaptation to climate change, and economic production. In the formal sector, only 10% of women are in the sector of STI (science, technology, innovation). Only 5% of women who become members of the national academy of science technology in the respective disciplines. Why does it happen? This paper studies several vocational schools in Jakarta to answer those questions. This research found that the fear of a mother and daughter against STEM is not just happening today, but deeply rooted in the tradition, even in modern era. Besides bullying both in school and in the community, girls’ interest in STEM is also still very low compared to boys. However, this study found how girls copes those hindrances with strong will via their agency to win STEM in their education pathways.

Abstract

This paper not only narrated the National Social Security System in Healthcare, but also findings of fact of the direct field practice of the registration of Indonesian Health Card (KIS)-Contribution Assistance Recipients (PBI) for poor women, minorities, and other vulnerable groups in the poor area of Jakarta, Bogor, and Depok. Abstract

Just like others, women undergone an imprisonment sentence also have specific women needs relating to biological, psychological condition, and the vulnerability as a woman. In Indonesia, the government commitment in fulfilling the special needs has started with the signing of a number of national and international regulations. The materialization of the commitment ismandated to the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, in this case is the Directorate General of Corrections that has a job and function relating to criminal execution. To see the seriousness of the government in executing the commitment, the Center for Detention Studies did a surveyon the quality of correctional service in 12 women penitentiaries involving 385 women inmates and 35 women detainees in 4 (four) different periods in between 2013-2015. The result shows that the commitment to provide the women special needs has not yet been done well. The strong patriarchal paradigm considering that women are not supposed to commit any crime causes some components in women detention to be not gender-sensitive yet. The shape of the building and the facilitation pattern shows that women are not expected to become an occupant of detention facility. As the consequence, the specific needs of women spending their time in detention facility are neglected.

Abstract

The paper brings about the personal experience of Indonesian women citizen (WNI) who marry to foreigners (WNA) in obtaining access to their right in land ownership and in struggling to challenge the constrains and strategies in order to have their rights rehabilitated by the state who has been treating the citizen unfairly. The marriage status has caused women to be discriminated if they don’t have a prenuptial agreement. The research uses feminist-perspective qualitative methodology, reinforced by three theories, namely multicultural feminism, feminist legal theory, and access to justice theory. There are three findings of the research. First, the prenuptial agreement places woman WNI in a dilemmatic position to choose between access to land ownership rights or joint marital property. Second, some see this and name it as legal smuggling or some dub it legal breakthrough. Third, it is necessary to build solidarity to unite in struggling for change against discriminative policy, by involving and being involved in voicing woman experience to rehabilitate equality of rights before the law.
