Abstract

UNDP 2004 has reported that 75% of the world inhabit a high-risk disaster-prone area. Oxfam 2005 has narrated that during the tsunami attacking Indonesia and other countries, 77% casualties were women and girls. This facts shall strengthen the understanding of international gender instrument that support those who are vulnerable during disaster. Indonesia has impotant task to work and cooperate among multistakeholders such as government, communities, CSOs, NGOs, mass medias, etc to reduce disaster-risks. Indonesia should also pay more attention to promote women’s agency in reducing disaster-risks.

Abstract

This paper examines the tension between private and public sphere in deciding women’s role against ecological crisis. State, companies, traditional tribe-based women alliance, village women have their own perception and definition in projecting to save the ecology. Private sphere is where women construct their identity, transmitted ecological spirit to their children, according their phantasy of beauty and fashion based on ecological-friendly product, etc. Public sphere is where women campaign explicitly against company that destroy their environment as form of ecological and gender injustice. The urge to protect the ecology, for women, means the dealing of the tension between domestic and public spheres.

Abstract

This article examines a recent ILO funded project designed to engage more Indonesian journalists and media organizations in advocacy journalism on behalf of domestic worker legislation. Applying Ann Stoler’s notion of ‘disregard’ in the context of post-Suhartodemocratization, I illustrate how established newsroom practices and patterns of reporting helped maintain distinctions between ‘home’ and overseas domestic workers which impeded progress towards comprehensive legislation. Indonesia’s endorsement of the adoption of ILO Convention 189 in June 2011 opened up political opportunities, provided a framework for re-scripting media narratives and encouraged journalists to give more space to domestic workers’ voices. At the same time, increased media coverage enabled those opposed to legislation to reiterate a gendered disregard for the social and economic value of domestic work.

Abstract

Notion of “wani ing tata” basically is manifestation of noble conception to regard women having dignity in society. That actualization then explained in dual roles which operated in both areas; domestic and social engangement. The words “wanita” basically has been encountered in three social realms such as “wanodya” and “putri”. Those three concepts symbolized multifunctional roles that ascribed women as educator, nurse, and balancer. Javanese women leadership proved by prominent famous figure like Queen Shima, Tribhuana Tungga Dewi, and Suhita. In this case, its conception has ramified into both others notion; ardhaneswari and prameswari. Prameswari can be understood as main women; meanwhile ardhananeswari can be explained as tough and strong women. The emergence of patriarchal system into sociey reduced concept of “wani ing tata”. It puts women as inferior symbolized by “kasur”, “pupur’, and “sumur”.

Abstract

This research was conducted in Morodemak and Purworejo Villages, Demak District, Central Java Province, Indonesia, by focusing on problems faced by fisherwomen—those who go out to sea as well as those who process fishing catch—and the activism of Puspita Bahari (fisherwomen organization in Demak). This research aims to show that women have contributed to the economic progress of coastal communities. Additionally, this research became a personal project as the researchers had the opportunity to directly observe the activities of fisherwomen who go out to sea. Furthermore, in the research process, the researchers participated in the advocacy process to help fisherwomen gain recognition for the work they do. By using Naila Kabeer’s gender analysis, this research found that the complexity of the problems faced by fisherwomen are truly layered and involve the family, community and market. Division of labor, biased bureaucracy and domestic violence are the three main topics studied in this paper. It’s urgent to recognize fisherwomen, as this recognition would be the first step that must be taken in order to improve the lives of fisherwomen.

Abstract

This paper is an overview toward SOGIE (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression). This charted the history of lesbianism in Indonesia. Approach being used is feminist personal history. There are two approaches in advocy of human-right based SOGIE. First, the advocacy toward KUHP (product of law) that is based on positive and gender-normative that will endangered the existence of LGBT in Indonesia. Second, SOGIE-activists shall understand fully the plurality of gender and sexuality that is homegrown in Indonesia. This is the best way to advocate the rights as an integral part of Nusantara culture.
