Abstract

This paper shows that the role and position of Indonesian women in local governance are improving gradually since the implementation of direct elections in 2005. The “structural opportuinities” for women to be elected as local leader have increased under the direct elections. The number of women elected as local leaders has risen significantly during 2005-2014 periods. Female local leaders’ profiles are diverse in terms of their socio-political background, individual capital and political parties, reflecting a new typology of female local leaders.The presence of female local leaders does not necessarily mean that they always advocate for women issues in their policy line, as this ideal condition depends on other influential factors. And yet, this paper suggests the declining trend of participation and opportunities of women in local governance as the new Local Government Act No. 23/2014 adopts the election of local government head via the Regional People’s Representative Council to replace the earlier mechanism of direct election.

Abstract

This paper shows the importance of feminist pedagogy as a vision in Christian theological education. Oppression experiences of women as the root of all of oppression of human and ecology, are approached by liberation and transformative education, for justice and equality. Feminist theology needs a place in theological education and in the church education, thus within feminist perspectivecontexts. The core of the Christian tradition in theology is liberation and transformation. Peruati is presenting this feminist vision. As anassociation of theologically educated women in Indonesia, they come together with theologically educated men for movement, for liberation and transformation. Peruati enter the house-ekklesia as feminist pedagogy. Those are the church education and theological Christian education.

Abstract

In Beijing Platform Action (BPFA) in 1995, one of the twelve critical issues is the girl-child. Referring to the reality in many countries that girls from an early age are treated discriminately and harmfully into practices such as female genital mutilation, sex selection before the baby is born, even the killing of female infants, violence against girls, child marriage, sexual exploitation, sexual abuse, discrimination against girls in provision, protection, & participation and other discriminatory practices, such as regarding the health and welfare facilities for girls. This paper will examine Indonesia’s efforts to reduce the marriage of girls.

Abstract

Women’s participation in politics is a crucial discourse in Indonesia. Affirmative action policy by providing 30% quota for women in parliament is a positive thing enforcing women to enter into political contestation. However, encouraging women to engage in politics is not easy task. Politics from the outset has been identified as a distinctive world of men and women experienced constant domestication systematically orchestrated by the state. Ibuism ideology caused women to experience a variety of vulnerabilities and bundle of violences in formal politics. To revive women politically especially at the community level, women can learn to negotiate outside of formal politics to voice their representation.

Abstract

The number of women in the medical field today is probably much evolved compared to when this science was first introduced in Indonesia. In the colonial period, the number of women entering into the medical field was minimal. Patriarchal values restricted women’s access to education, including the education of doctors, nurses, midwives and pharmacists. Becoming a doctor was considered to be against women’s ‘nature’. The STOVIA medical school at the turn of the 20th century, for example, was discriminatory towards women. The medical profession was seen as suitable only for men. Using a historical perspective, this study seeks to uncover the experience womens in the medical field in Indonesia. The achievements of women to date were inspired by the struggles of thewomen in the past.

Abstract

This paper narrates indigenous women, land rights, indigenous forests and the status of women’s marginalization in the agrarian conflicts in Nusantara. Forests are not only as natural resource, but for indigenous peoples, they were seen as culture. Rivers and swamps are not only a source of food. These are also the culture of indigenous women. Rivers and swamps are source for indigenous women in teaching their children to survive in nature. Since the presence of monoculture plantations, mining, etc., then they lose their cosmology (logos on beauty). Not only that the beauty is lost, but also acute environmental pollution that affect birth of disable infants.

Abstract

Power constellations perspective about sexuality of women and women’s body in the context of legislative advocacy Elimination of Sexual Violence Bill which is currently being carried out by a network of women’s movement representing how women and women’s body interpreted. This was reflected in the legal product and legal draft which being advocated, from the recognition of who is considered to be the victims should be protected and who is the perpetrator who should be subject to sanctions. The comparison between the Law No. 44 Year 2008 on Pornography as an initiative of the Parliament members with a legal draft on the Elimination of Sexual Abuse, can describe the power constellation of thinking about women’s sexuality. Because of a legal product shows the ideology of the manufacturer o f the law itself, in particular the law maker (government and parliament) as well as more broadly is the society.

Abstract

Gender Watch is a strategy to advocate policy that is based on pro-women data. Gender Watch is developed to improve access and participation of poor and marginalized women to government social protection. The improvement of access started with the development of poor women capacity and organizing in grass root level with the establishment of Women School in Gresik Regency. In this school, women collect data, work with many stakeholders, submit the obtained data to the policy maker, and oversee the Regional Development Planning Forum (Musrenbang) in the village up to the regency. The work and the contribution of Women School in development force the Gresik Regional Government to be committed to allocate the budget for Women School and to replicate Women School in several villages. The commitment of the regional government is included in Mid-Term Regional Development Plan (RPJMD), City Work Plan (RKPD), and Regent’s regulation. The paper outlines the process and the experience of organizing in the grass root level and the data-based advocacy effort, so the policy advocacy strategy that stresses on the organizing of the grass root women through women schools, attracts the attention of the regional government to allocate the budget in the village level up to the regency level.
