Abstract

This article focus on the resistance practice by the DIY metal agents towards popularization of metal in Yogyakarta. Beside, this article also attempt to elaborate the survival startegy of the metal agents in Yogyakarta to maintain the Do-It-Yourself practice. Regarding to those focus, this article does not treat metal as a single entity, rather as a dynamic and fluid social space. Thus this article utilized a considerably different kind of approach compared to previous study of metal in Indonesia. This article is based on an ethnographic research, which utilized praticipant observation and in-depth interview as data collecting methods. The data collection process was carried out of six months. The findings based on the field research show that the resistance practice of metal agents in Yogyakarta was manifested through discursive and musical consumption practices. Both of these practices were used strategically by the DIY metal agents to establish an imaginary boundary against social agents and the field of populer music. Furthermore, the strategy which used to maintain the DIY practices, represented through DIY metal agents involevement within collective actions by one of indie/DIY community in Yogyakarta. Based on the research findings, it can be explained that the dynamics of the field with regards to the resistance and survival strategy by the DIY metal agents represent an intens relation between individuality and collectivity.

Abstract

Central Java is one of provinces that is progressive in developing its industries, especially in manufacturing. However, the unemployment rate among youth in this province turns out to be considerably high. The high number of unemployment rates and low participation in the labor market among youth are caused by various factors. One of them is the gap between human resources and demand in the labor market. The gap in education, skills, and access to information triggering the condition whereas youth are not counted to involve in the labor market. This gap certainly emerged based on the social class differences inherent in each young people. In addition, gender differences also affect opportunities and freedom in choosing a job. This research uses qualitative methods with the process of observation, in-depth interviews, and Focus Group Discussion as techniques for data collecting. Through the selection of two female and two male informants (purposive sampling), this research concludes that social class factors, gender, and changing contexts, especially in the conditions of Labor Market Flexibility (LMF) became the main factors in shaping and influencing the transition process related to future aspirations of youth. The application of neoliberalism and Labor Market Flexibility perpetuates the social reproduction based on class and gender which enables social gaps to increase in the future. This condition is predicted to marginalize poor and vulnerable young people even more

Abstract

Abstract

This study will examine digital work relations that occur between driver partners with PT. Gojek Indonesia which happened because of business management based on digital platforms in the form of applications. The use of this platform has caused a change to existing work relations, especially in terms of existing contracts and wage systems. Gojek as a platform-based business is in great demand by the younger generation of workers because it's working hour's flexibility, higher wages, and bonuses offered. However, in fact, there are many workers' rights that are not fulfilled by Gojek to their driving partners. By using data collection methods in the form of documentation studies and data analysis carried out through the stages of reduction, presentation, verification, and conclusion, it was found that Gojek partners experienced vulnerabilities due to the use of a partner system that eliminated some workers' rights such as social security, overtime salaries, absence of severance pay, and partner relations patterns that were more subordinated. In addition, the welfare promised, in the end, is only an illusion because partners must experience exploitation in the form of unreasonable hours of work, incompatibility with income as promised, and business relationship gaps.

Abstract

Many internet technological discoveries have shaped many aspects of human life, including economic transaction for goods and services. Online-based transportation service is one form of digital economies, which was born out of the current progress of internet applications integrated to smartphones. Motorcycle ride-sharing has been existing in Indonesia from a long time ago, but it becomes much more popular after being offered through internet apps on smartphones. This Article base on mixed-methods research by using survey and in-depth interview as collecting data technically. Based on research on the workers of Go-Jek online-based transportation service in three cities (Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and Banyuwangi), founded that this job has absorbed a very large number of workers, and the majority of them are young workers. The new things in this job are its job design is fully based on the usage of the algorithm, namely in communicating, supervising, rewarding, and punishing the workers. This affects the job process which provides an ultimate authority to the company to make any decision over the workers. Lastly, we especially analysis the process of deskilling and skill trap in which the young workers do not have an opportunity to get the rank promotion, career mobility, and income up-grading. Considering they are still young and have a very long productive age, this issue is urgent to study further by policymakers in the employment sector.

Abstract

Post-Fordism is a relevant context in framing the issue of school to work transition faced by the young generation. In this era, the labor market not only requires energy, but also more specific skills. In addition, rapid and massive social change in the Post-Fordism era requires young people to compete at the local, national and global level. On the other hand, young people are faced with the fact that the distribution of capital has never been equally distributed in every social space. Thus, mobility is one of the important strategies for young generation as an effort to accumulate cultural, social, economic and symbolic capital. This study uses qualitative methods with observation and in-depth interviews as data collection techniques. Through the narratives of 4 young women in Central Java, this study concludes that they must reflexively strategize under particular conditions where social inequality is manifested in the spatial dimension, while at the same time intersects with gender and social class. From family support and opportunities for educational scholarships, two young women utilize mobilities to respond social change towards a new economy amid limited amount of capital accumulation. Two other young women had to to lose their opportunity to achieve upward class mobility. Thus structural and cultural obstacles as women and social class, make it difficult for two young women to upgrade their own capital; thus social change towards Post-Fordism tends to be a threat rather than an opportunity.
