Abstract

This study explores the strategies and efforts that have been made against the risks of using social media for fresh graduate who are looking for job. These risks are obtained from personal historical data and surveillance by other parties, especially Human Resources. These strategies and efforts are carried out as individual goals in modifying employable identity or for getting a job. Therefore, the research questions are how fresh graduate treat personal data about themselves that are shared on social media and how digital self-tracking forms the relationship between digital technology and self-identity. Through a qualitative approach using digital ethnographic methods and self-tracking theory by Deborah Lupton, the authors attempt to answer the questions in this study by conducting interviews and observations on six informants who carry two identities, that is fresh graduate and job seekers. This study showed that the informants carried out two strategies on personal historical data: cleaning and displaying. Furthermore, when doing self-tracking, informants also establish relations with digital technology to produce negotiation related to the formation of the expected self-hood, which at the end of the study shows not only the goal of getting a job but also efforts for self-reflection, learning, and growing process.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic that occurred in Indonesia caused the closure of public spaces as an effort to limit social interaction to prevent transmission. This policy affects the needs of youth for public spaces as a means for them to carry out night activities. For youth, nightlife activities are not just moments to find fun, but also build their identity. Malioboro is one of the places in Yogyakarta that is a destination for youth to do night activities. This research focuses on nightlife activities carried out by youth in Malioboro during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, this study seeks to see the need for youth to have space for expression and shape their identity. Based on this focus, this study looked at how a Malioboro Area space can be reproduced by youth through activities at night to meet their needs. This research uses the case study method, whereresearchers conduct an in-depth analysis of a case through and tracing a number of data that is limited in time and place.  Based on the findings of field data, it shows that activities at night in Malioboro for youth are a necessity even during a pandemic. They see the Malioboro Area as having an appeal through symbols that are displayed as the identity of the space. So the youth use Malioboro as a place to express according to their wishes in taking advantage of free time at night. Based on these findings, it can be explained that youth and a space are related in the formation of identity.

Abstract

This article focuses on individual reflections on ‘ngevent’, which later became ‘slang’ among youths who represent their existence in seeking experiences outside of the campus as volunteers in art and cultural events during their status as students in Yogyakarta. This study is based on a phenomenological study, which uses in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document studies in data collection and is carried out after selecting several participants who have similar experiences in this topic. The findings based on this study show that this experience is proven to be self-enhancing as well as helping to form the values that are attached to identity as agents in youth work who continue to progress through social life. This article explains how the experience is interpreted through construction of the meaning of ‘ngevent’ related to perspectives, motivations, and benefits, as a youth in the context of an late modernity societies that is close to the risk of uncertainty of youth transition in Furlong & Cartmel’s. By using the phenomenological approach with student volunteering perspective and analytical framework of reflexive identity presented by Anthony Giddens help me explain how the social process and the self-construction of the experience, this study found 3 levels of aspect as a result to understand the meaning on the process of ‘ngevent’: External Consciousness, Internal Consciousness, and Oriented Motive & Outcomes. in this end, such experiences can help youth reflection the process & minimize the risk of ‘uncertainty’ in the transition from education to work.

Abstract

To fulfil their daily needs, youth who practice a zero waste (ZW) lifestyle can shop at an eco-bulk store (eco-friendly store) –taking an example of Ranah Bhumi which is located in Prawirotaman, Yogyakarta. On a large-scale however, the consumption practices in eco bulk stores and the implementation of ZW lifestyle have become an arena for seizing capital opportunities as well as a way for the youth to differentiate themselves as part of the global generation. Using a multi-sited ethnographic method, this research focuses on examining how youth as ZW practitioners become part of the global generation through habitus, in addition, to identifying factors behind the consumption practices of these youth at Ranah Bhumi using green consumerism and youth culture theory. The research found that the youth’s ZW lifestyle habit was formed by their parents, friends, community and social media. This structure is also shaped by the youth’s high mobility in the global realm which embodies their awareness of global lifestyle and environmental issues. The consumption practices and implementation of ZW lifestyle are also an attempt to establish class positions as well as relations among the youth as capital. They categorize themselves as mindful people who are presumably better than their parents’ generation and even their peers, although in fact, they are also immersed by the existing ‘green’ discourse.

Abstract

This study examines youths who make “joki skripsi” and “joki tugas” as side jobs. The difficulty of finding the right job for college graduates makes youth trapped in the precarious work. This happens because of the gap between the output and the types of work available. Young people need jobs that are right for them and able to afford what they don't get at their primary jobs. We conducted in-depth interviews with three young “joki tugas” in East Java to discover their reflective steps towards precarious work. We found that in youth making “joki tugas” as a reflective effort to mitigate two risks. The first risk is financial insecurity when they are unemployed. The second risk is the threat of deskilling because their work does not require high skills. This study seeks to enrich the study of “joki skripsi” in Indonesia, their relation to the initiation of the world of work, and the demands for youth to be reflective in dealing with these conditions.

Abstract

Policy making in a democratic country must be inclusive—involving the participation of various segments of society, youth is no exception to be left behind. The attempt made by the public to influence this process is called policy advocacy. There are various problems in this country that require policy advocacy, one of which is the climate crisis. Since the problem is quite complex and has many sub-facets, the climate crisis needs a serious policy instrument from the government. One of the issues that is closely related to the climate crisis is the use of single-use plastic bags. This study aims to look at youth participation in policy advocacy related to the ban on the single-use plastic bags in DKI Jakarta and Bali Provinces. Using a qualitative approach, this study compares youth organizations that carry out policy advocacy in each province—namely Gerakan Indonesia Diet Kantong Plastik (GIDKP) in DKI Jakarta and Bye Bye Plastics Bag (BBPB) in Bali. Based on Hart’s ladder of youth participation, it appears that youth participation in GIDKP’s campaign activities is at level 6 (adult-inisiated shared decisions with youth) while BBPB’s is already at level 8 (youth-initiated shared decisions with adults)—but only reaches level 3 (tokenism) for direct government lobbying. Thus, based on Gen and Wright’s framework of policy advocacy strategies , it can be concluded that GIDKP carries out direct reform strategy whilst BBPB tends to use popular power strategy. There needs to be a collaboration between both organization’s specific strategies and competencies to achieve their mutual policy advocacy goal.

Abstract

Body movements such as brawls, playing with hands and feet, pushing bodies between actors, and cases of death have been found, causing moshing to be viewed negatively, particularly by commoner. Using a phenomenological approach as well as a youth study approach in the form of an emic approach, this research seeks to answer ignorance about the background of moshing and understand moshing as a form of communication for young survivors of hardcore music. According to the findings, there were several types of moshing, including two-step, violence dance, wall of death, stage dive, crowd killer, and pogo, which have also been classified as positive or negative hardcore based on the background of each hardcore band. Moshing was able to provide free space in expressing moods when there were problems, feeling bored and tired after full activities; a place for having fun to vent negative aura into positive aura; and excess inner satisfaction in enjoying hardcore music for youth in Malang City. As a result, if people position themselves as the perpetrator, moshing did not always become a negative thing.
