Abstract

This article explores the perception of Generation Z students towards classical music in the digital era. The era in which various streaming platforms have made accessing a wide range of music genres easier. Despite the easier access, classical music is still identified as a highbrow taste. Bourdieu’s theory of habitus and cultural capital has been challenged by Peterson’s theory of cultural omnivorousness, which suggests that individuals now tend to have more diverse and eclectic tastes, enjoying a range of cultural genres from both highbrow and lowbrow across the traditional hierarchical social class boundaries. However, this research indicates that Bourdieu’s theory on the cultural capital and upper-class habitus as elements shaping the taste for classical music remains highly relevant. By employing a phenomenological approach, the research focuses on the subjective experiences of UGM Student Choir members to understand their views on classical music as a taste of the upper class. This research finds that despite the growing access to digital music streaming, the perception of classical music as the taste of the highbrow class persists, especially because enjoying, appreciating, and understanding classical music still requires the knowledge attached to the habitus of the highbrow class.

Abstract

COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to the emergence of various innovations and developments in the social lives, especially in accelerating the utilization of the virtual world. One of the innovations offered is virtual tourism, which has begun to be popular among young people. Virtual tourism is utilized by urban communities, especially young people, as a new alternative in tourism practices involving technology and social media. This article discusses virtual tourism, which is widely practiced by urban youth in Yogyakarta. Various factors, motivations, and experiences of young people in virtual tourism are the topics investigated in this article. By using a qualitative method through observation and in-depth interviews with seven informants practicing virtual tourism, this article found several interesting points: (1) virtual tourism has become a practical alternative holidaychoice for urban youth, (2) the advancements and conveniences offered by social media as tools for virtual tourism, and (3) the livelier expression of young people’s imagination in virtual tourism of both natural and urban landscapes. Driving factors such as digital technology facilities are determinants for virtual tourism practices that can contribute to digital humanities.

Abstract

Appropriate outfit choices are an important aspect of presenting a professional appearance at a music concert. Each concert is closely associated with the identity of the singer, reflected in the concert concept, choreography, stage setting, and costumes. This research will examine the significance of outfits and friendship bracelets worn by young Taylor Swift fans, who have become a defining feature of her The Eras Tour.  This research employs a combination of digital ethnography methods, specifically utilizing Instagram and TikTok platforms, and participant observation techniques. The results of this study indicate that the use of outfits by Taylor Swift fans tailored to specific albums reflects the fans' strong connection with Taylor's songs, as evidenced by certain outfit modifications. This form of connection can be observed among young people who engage in the voluntary practice of sewing, modifying, and searching for outfits that align with their preferred Taylor Swift album. Furthermore, this form of connection is disseminated and reinforced by fans at The Eras Tour concerts through the exchange of friendship bracelets. Each fan creates bracelets inspired by Taylor Swift's albums, titles, or lyrics, which they then exchange with other fans at the venue.

Abstract

This article explores how young adults navigate the challenge of spending leisure time with friends amid the increasingly individualized transition to adulthood in the era of late modernity. Heightened by productivity demands that contribute to feelings of alienation, maintaining friendships has become increasingly difficult. As a result, opportunities to experience being with friends are limited, prompting them to look for alternatives, one of which is through Community-Based Open Vacations (CBOV), known in Indonesian as Vakansi Terbuka Berbasis Komunitas (VTBK). Inspired by the resurgence of open trips following the COVID-19 pandemic, VTBK offers curated experiences of social togetherness as a means for young adults to engage in shared vacations. This research was conducted through an eight-month ethnographic study (September 2023 - April 2024) on two VTBKs as the main site, which were Sobat Healing (@kamisobathealing) and Besok Libur (@besoklibur.titik), and three other VTBKs as additional sites, which were Jalan-Jalan Jajan (@_jalanjalanjajan), Sahabat Bermain (@sahabat_bermain), and Nyari Bandung (@nyari.bandung). The results show that VTBK constructs the need for friendship among young adults through experiential consumption of being together with friends. In the process, VTBK seeks to position the relationship between participants in a strangership relation as a substitute for previously established friendships. However, these relationships can only develop into deeper friendships through socio-technical interactions on social media.

Abstract

Youth in their maturation process are constructed through three stages of transition, one of which is having their own home. However, in the context of Yogyakarta City, the transformation of urban space that occurs is increasingly leading to tourism gentrification. This condition results in land scarcity and high land prices in Yogyakarta City. This study aims to determine the subjective meaning of Yogyakarta City youth regarding home ownership. This study uses a qualitative method involving four informants who are Yogyakarta City youth with certain criteria, namely based on status (students or fresh graduates), coming from different social classes (upper middle social class and lower middle social class), and considering gender aspects (male and female). Data collection was carried out through in-depth semi-structured interviews and supplemented with literature studies through relevant studies. The results of the study show that having your own home is still a reference for maturity for youth, but empirically not all can go through this transition smoothly. In addition, social class and gender aspects also influence the subjective meaning of youth regarding home ownership.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology presents new challenges, particularly in addressing online gender-based violence (OGBV), which also impact young people in suburban areas of Indonesia. This study aims to explore the perspectives and understanding of suburban youth regarding OGBV and its prevention, based on the assumption that there are significant gaps in information and intervention efforts aimed at eliminating such violence. This research adopts a constructive paradigm and employs a phenomenological research method focusing on young people aged 18-35 both women and men, in Tanjungharjo Village, Kulonprogo, and Gari Village, Gunung Kidul, in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The main objectives are to examine suburban youth’s perspectives on OGBV cases in Indonesia and to gain deeper insights into their understanding of OGBV preventions and handlings. The findings show that young people’s perspectives on OGBV are highly diverse, shaped by factors including social norms, patriarchal culture, lack of education and intervention related to gender equality and OGBV. Furthermore, their awareness and knowledge of procedures for preventing OGBV are relatively low. This research serves as a foundation for formulating intervention and prevention programs for OGBV in Indonesia. Such programs should move beyond urban-centric approaches and instead be tailored to the specific conditions and needs of suburban youth.
