Abstract

Ideational meaning merupakan salah satu aspek dalam systemic functional linguistic yang lebih banyak dianalisa dalam teks tertulis. Ideational meaning terdiri dari tiga aspek utama yaitu participants, processes, dan circumstances. Adanya fenomena masih sedikitnya penelitian analisa ideational meaning dalam teks lisan, maka perlu adanya penelitian tentang realisasi ideational meaning pada teks lisan.  Penelitian ini merupakan kualitatif-analisis wacana dengan menggunakan analisa transitivitas (transitivity analysis) yang bertujuan untuk menjelaskan aspek-aspek ideational meaning yang terdapat dalam video perkenalan diri mahasiswa di kelas Speaking 1. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa aspek participants, processes, dan circumstances yang dominan terealisasi dalam video self-introduction adalah senser (participant), relational (process), and place and cause circumstances (circumstances).  Dapat disimpulkan bahwa mahasiswa kelas Speaking 1 lebih dominan menggunakan senser, relational process, and place and cause circumstances ketika mereka memperkenalkan diri dalam bahasa Inggris.Kata Kunci: systemic functional linguistic, transitivity analysis, self-introduction, speaking

Abstract

Reading offers a combination of challenges for EFL students. In this case, they meet layered difficulties from language barriers to lack of exposure to critically interpret the reading materials. Being aware of this circumstance, the present study attempts to examine the students’ responses in an EFL reading class where authentic assessment is being implemented to help them learn to read in English. In particular, this study is conducted to discover the students’ responses if the instructional framework could accommodate their needs in learning to read in L2. Further, a qualitative case study is applied, and data are collected from questionnaire and 16 meeting field-observation. Results of the study indicate that the students gradually respond positively to the application of authentic assessment. They reveal that authentic assessment (1) motivates them have a reading routine, so that they can find a lot more vocabulary and get used to English discourse, (2) trains them to demonstrate their reading comprehension in more constructive ways such as writing reviews, presentations, and discussions, and (3) helps them assess their own reading performance. In sum, the students admit that authentic assessment helps most of thethem enjoy reading throughout a series of social practices, in this case, the application of authentic assessment components including portfolios, performance assessment, and self-assessment.Keywords: students’ responses, authentic assessment, EFL reading

Abstract

Having tailor-made materials for ESP class can really be a hand to achieve learning goals and also to help students to achieve targeted skills and knowledge in ESP class. This study investigated need analysis of Civil Engineering students in a university  in Indonesia in order to explore the needs in developing materials for Civil Engineering students. Need analysis is an important steps in terms of developing materials. In order to detect students’ views toward what they need to learn, their preferred learning style, and their attitudes, interest toward learning English, a revised questionnaire was utilized. There were 61 students involved in this investigation. There was fifteen questions-questionnaire given to the students. An interview was also conducted as triangulation of the data. The results revealed that the students considered that the four macro skills are the most important component ehich neede the most practice, whereas they found grammar as the component that they most resented and had the least expertise in. Moreover, they tended to have various activities when they learn English. They needed various activities to draw their attention and motivation in learning English. It is hoped that the findings from this study can assist teachers and surriculum and syllabus designer to consider the students’ real needs and try to design and develop materials which can fulfill the present gap.

Abstract

This study aims at developing writing materials based on Eclectic Approach for Indonesian EFL learners. The material is mainly developed and used for teaching essay writing for the third-semester students in the English Department, University of Islam Malang. It is also expected that the materials lower their anxiety as the findings of the preliminary study. This R and D research adapted development model proposed by Borg and Gall with the following procedures: need analysis, developing writing materials, expert validation, revision I, try out, revision II, and final product.  The final product of this research is an instructional material for Writing III course which was developed by considering students' needs, levels, suggestions, and feedback from experts. It also made used of the principles of Eclectic approach to lower their anxiety in writing essay, such as providing much exposure toward the target language with less pressure, integrating the good sides of various teaching techniques, using real-life situation to make learning more comprehensible, considering the students' needs, teaching and introducing contextual grammar and vocabulary, and integrating all language skills.

Abstract

Abstract Education 4.0 is a new paradigm in educational context in which it focuses on the innovation and maximizes the use of information, internet, and technology. This new paradigm is currently promoted in many subjects, including English subjects in English Education Study Program of Universitas Tidar. One of the subjects that promote Education 4.0 is English for Survival. Therefore, this study reports to explore the challenges in promoting Education 4.0 in English for Survival classes. This study uses qualitative research in the form of case study. The participants of this study are the lecturers and the students of English for Survival classes. The instruments of data collection are questionnaire and interview. The finding shows that three challenges revealed in promoting Education 4.0 in which they cover lecturer’s teaching technique, students’ speaking skill, and facilities. Besides, the lecturers and the students need to highlight those challenges and solve those problems. All in all, against all the odds of promoting Education 4.0, the lecturers and students need to apply Education 4.0 in order to help the students to compete in the era of 4.0. Keywords: Education 4.0, speaking, autonomous learning, perceptions

Abstract

The use of preposition of place in speaking performance still becomes problems for students. Therefore; it is important to evaluate the students’ ability in using preposition of place. This research aimed at evaluating the students’ ability and describing the problems faced by students in using prepositions of place in speaking performance.The descriptive qualitative method was applied in this research. The instrument of this research was an oral test. To get the data, the researcher used Tape Video Recorder (TVR). There were 25 participants of the first semester students of English study program of Timor University chosen randomly as the sample in this research. There were four steps used in analyzing the data, namely transcribing, codifying, analyzing and describing.The results of the research showed that five students passed and nineteen students failed in the test. The highest score was 80,95 and the lowest score was 31. There was one student categorized as very good; two students were categorized as good; three students were categorized as enough; eleven students were categorized poor and seven students were categorized as very poor. For the kind of preposition; the highest percentage was IN which was 67,53%. Then it was followed by ON which was 57,32%. The preposition BEHIND made 55,51% which was higher than NEAR/CLOSE which was 51,56% but it is lower than IN FRONT OF which was 56,57%. The preposition UNDER was 48,39% which was higher than AT. The lowest percentage was preposition AT which was 47,94%.. The students’ average score was 54,60. Therefore the students’ level of ability was categorized as poor. This means that the students failed in using prepositions of place in speaking performance.

Abstract

This study aims to propose a method called Translatonomics to teach English for Economics through translation practice to encourage the students to understand English contextually. The participants are 25 students of Management and 25 students of Accounting study program. The research is conducted firstly to identify the ability of the students to understand English text about Economics and translate it into Bahasa Indonesia, then to introduce contextual translation from translating simple sentences, short paragraphs, and text. The result shows that most students still have high dependency on instant translation such as Google Translate and do not try to relate the context as they do not understand the text. Therefore, it is important to encourage the students to understand the text contextually and one of the ways is through translation practice. In Translatonomics, the translation practice section is divided into three parts: translating simple sentences, translating short paragraphs, and translating texts. On the first part, students are encouraged to translate English simple sentences about Economics. Then, on the second part, students are encouraged to translate English short paragraphs extracted from Economics texts. Finally, on the third part, students are encouraged to translate some Economics texts.

Abstract

This research aims to find out: (1) verbal feedback used by EFL teachers in classroom interaction, (2) function of verbal feedback used by EFL teachers in classroom interaction. This research employs descriptive qualitative research. The participants of this research were English teachers and the students of SMA Buq’atun Mubarakah. The data of this research were collected by recording the classroom interaction. The obtained data was analyzed by using Miles & Huberman analysis. The results of this research reveal that (1) the verbal feedback used by EFL teachers in classroom interaction, are (a) questioning, (b) praising (c) clarifying (d) comment (e) repeating (f) explicit correction and (g) Treating. (2) The functions of verbal feedback used by the teacher are a) interactional feedback, and (b) evaluative feedback.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find the types of code switching used in the novel and to describe the reasons influencing the use of code switching in the novel. This research used descriptive qualitative method; this method used to describe clearly about the fact of code switching weather the form and the reasons based on the data that gained through reading the whole contain of the novel. Analysis focused on three types of code swtiching (inter-sentential switching, intra-sentential switching and tag-switching) and the reasons of code switching. The results of the analysis revealed that mostly inter-sentential switching of utterance used in this novel.

Abstract

Probolinggo, East Java is an area of Pandalungan. Culturally, the area has the mixing of Javanese and Madurese cultures, so as the local languages that are used by the society. Most of Probolinggo people master Javanese as well as Madurese language. Besides, there is one more dialect developing in Probolinggo, that is Tengger dialectdialect. It is used by the Tengger society in Tengger Mountainuos region around Mount Bromo. The Javanese that is used by the Tengger society is different from the Javanese of Probolinggo or even the standard Javanese. The significant difference is in the pronunciation of the vowel. It tends to have the features of the Old Javanese. By doing Comparative Historical Linguistics study, the features of Tengger dialect compared to the Modern and Old Javanese. The qualitative descriptive study uses an observation method to collect the data. Then, they are analyzed by the distributional and identity methods. It indicates that the distribution and development of Javanese as a part of Austronesian language family is not merely innovatively. It can be relix likewise. The Tengger dialect phonetical and lexical features tends to be similar to the Old Javanese feature, not the modern ones as the innovative Javanese.
