Abstract

This research is motivated by the low sustainability of soybean-based MSMEs (Micro Small Medium Enterprises) in West Java. This is due to the low long-term value given to stakeholders in the economic, social and environmental dimensions and the less-than-optimal role of leaders in realizing business sustainability. The purpose of this study is describing the business sustainability, stakeholder engagement, transformational leadership and analyzing the effect of transformational leadership and stakeholder engagement on business sustainability. This research was conducted using a survey method on 254 soybean-based SMEs consisting of tempe, tofu and soy sauce craftsmen in West Java. Data was collected by distributing a questionnaire, interviewing and observations of the unit of analysis. The data that has been collected was analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis techniques. The results of this study stated that the business sustainability of soybean-based MSMEs was actually better in the social dimension and relatively less in the environmental dimension. The ability of transformational leaders to influence their employees to achieve goals is the highest ability, while the ability of forward-looking is the lowest than other dimensions. In building stakeholder engagement, the leader's ability to build trust is the highest, while business openness is the lowest compared to other capabilities. In this study, transformational leadership and stakeholder engagement affect business sustainability partially and simultaneously.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to empirically identify the profitability determinants of mining companies listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange from 2015 - to 2019. Those determinants of profitability investigated in this study are Liquidity, Firm Size, Leverage, and Asset Structure with ROA as the proxy of profitability. This study employs panel data regression with Fixed Effect Model using STATA software and the result of the research found the following: (1) Liquidity has a positive impact on profitability, (2) Firm Size has a positive impact on profitability, (3) The negative impact of Leverage on profitability is not supported, (4) Asset Structure does not have a significant effect on profitability. Because the evidences suggested that liquidity is one of the drivers of profitability in mining companies in Indonesia, it is advised for these companies to reexamine their liquidity management and try to strive to achieve a balance between the benefits and risks associated with liquidity. Furthermore, leverage is also found to be, in general, positively correlated with profitability. Thus, the mining firms are suggested to fund more of their business and expansion project with debt in order to quickly raise funds and also take benefit of the debt tax shield that comes with it. However, it needs to be noted that there is a diminishing return on leverage and there is a limit where the risk of bankruptcy outweighs the benefit of the leverage, so managers should evaluate the optimal leverage for their specific companies.

Abstract

The rapid and massive spread of COVID-19 has a major impact on a country's economy, including ASEAN countries. This research aims to examine the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak information on exchange rate movements and currency exchange rate volatility of ASEAN-5 countries. This study employs data on the number of infection cases to measure COVID-19 information. The research period begins with the first case that occurred in each ASEAN-5 country until December 31st, 2020, using the GARCH research method. The results indicate that the COVID-19 outbreak information had a significant effect on exchange rate volatility but had no effect on the movement of the ASEAN-5 exchange rate in one day. Meanwhile, in five days, the COVID-19 information did not significantly affect the movement and volatility of the exchange rates of ASEAN-5 countries. The influence of COVID-19 outbreak information on the ASEAN-5 exchange rate, which is stronger in one day than five days supports the theory of exchange rate dynamics. This finding implies that COVID-19 information affects the exchange rate volatility of ASEAN-5 countries in the short term. For this reason, investors can be wiser in managing their investment portfolios, and regulators can implement policies to reduce volatility in the foreign exchange market.
