Abstract

The microbiological purpose of teeth endodontic treatment with apical periodontitis is to reduce microbes in order to achieve periradicular tissue healing and to prevent microbes recolonized. These are obtained by antimicrobial measures, including chemo-mechanical procedures and intra-canal medication, with root canal obturation steps. One of the problems in endodontic is the planning consideration to give treatment with one or two visits. Performing intra-appointment medication is an absolute measure to promote disinfection and successful treatment. Another purpose of this paper is to provide a reference about one or two visit of endodontic treatment decision making for dental professionals. Root canal system on teeth with apical periodontitis treated in two visits endodontic and calcium hydroxide as the intra-appointment medication achieved better microbiological status than the one treated in one visit endodontic.

Abstract

There were several mouth rinses in the market, but chlorhexidine, essential oil, triclosan-sodium fluoride mouth rinseshave often been used because of their effectivity of periodontal pathogen. They can inhibit plaque formation that theycan bind enamel surface coated pellicle. Thirty patients were recruited to the clinical of Periodontology Departmentand have several criterias: no systemic disease and no crowded of teeth. The patients divided of three groups; group Ipatients rinse with 0,2% chlorhexidine 15 ml, 1 minute; group II patients rinse with essential oil 15 ml, 1 minute; groupIII patients rinse with triclosan-sodium fluoride 15 ml, 1 minute. According to one way ANOVA test, there were nosignificant differences plaque index among of the three mouth rinses to prevent plaque formation. It was concluded thatusing chlorhexidine could inhibit the growth of plaque better essential oil and triclosan-sodium fluoride.

Abstract

The success of orthodontic treatment, particularly with removable orthodontic appliances not only relies on theexpertise of the clinician, but also highly depends on the patient's own. It is necessary to know the extent of thesuccess rate of an orthodontic treatment. Assessment of malocclusion severity and treatment outcome has become avery popular object of research conducted by the PAR index. This study aims to determine the success rate oforthodontic treatment with removable appliances based on PAR Index. The research was carried out on March-May2011 with samples of patients dental models who had completed orthodontic treatment in the year 2008-2011 at theDepartment of Ortodonsia RSGMP UNHAS. Sixty six pairs of dental models fulfilled the inclusion criteria and therules of PAR Index. Percentage change in PAR score obtained by 35% in the assessment with no weighted and 36%was assessment by weighted. This results showed the level of orthodontic treatment success include into thecategory of "no change", but with a trend into the category of "a change "with a significant value ρ = 0.000 (ρ <0.05). It was concluded that there was occlusion improvements in orthodontic treatment with removable appliance, although very low and therefore need evaluation and improvement of governance maintenance carried out.

Abstract

The vertical dimension can be described as a vertical height of the face. Practical knowledge about the physiologicalrest position is very important in determining the vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) accurately. DeterminationVDO is one tough stage of prosthodontic treatment. There is no method or tool that can measure VDO accurately. Thisstudy can be used by dentists to help evaluate the results of VDO measurement performed by two dot technique, soconvincing dentists that the measurements are accurate. The distance was measured after the the two points on the tipof the nose and the tip of the chin assess, while DVO on the photo cephalometric measured by assessing the angle ofthe bispinal plane (SNA-SNP) with mandibular plane (Go-Gn), then OVD of cephalometric imaging was comparedwith compare the results of photo DVO cephalometric by two dots technique were measuring with Moyers standard.Based on research conducted at Dental Hospital University of Hasanuddin, there were obtained 20 samples that met the criteria as research subjects. Measuring DVO on the cephalometric photo, the mean value obtained on men20.214°and women 22.231°, insignificant statistically. It was concluded that the mean value of DVO corner was21.52°, still in the range of Moyers value with range 9-32°.

Abstract

Lesions caused by traumatic or unbalance occlusion, and overextension denture may occur in the majority ofpatients who use denture. This generally occurs in the use of unfit full dentures (FD) and in a long period of timecausing chronic irritation to mucosal tissues caused by the sharp and overextension of the FD flange. One of themost common tissue reaction caused by using unfit FD is inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia or more commonlyknown as the flabby ridge. This tissue reaction appears as fold of mucosal tissue, single or multiple, growexcessively around the sulcus mucobuccal, on the mucosa area unite gingiva and the cheek mucosa. Movement andgrowth of the tissue continuously causes problems in maintaining retention of FD. This article reports themanagement of denture-induced hyperplasia on maxilla edentulous of a 65-year old woman. Hyperplasia occurredfrom the left premolar to right premolar region of the maxilla. Excision was carried out through a 7 cm length tissueand then made for a conventional FD. As the result, patients are satisfied with the use of the new FD and did notfeel any further disruption to mucosal tissues

Abstract

Being old is a biologic process that can not be avoided, where degeneration occurs inmany ways, which finally decreases the function. These cause aging people prone tovarious diseases; including periodontal disease. Prevalence and severity of periodontaldiseases vary in world population. These differences seem to be related with age, sex, socioeconomic, education, and also ethnic and geography. This study was aimed toinvestigate the periodontal tissue of aging Buginese and Mandarnese. Total samples are390 persons (195 Buginese dan 195 Mandarnese). The condition of periodontal tissuewere checked using CPITN from WHO. Of 195 samples, 88 samples of Buginese and 55samples of Mandarnese were edentulous. The result showed periodontal disease ofBuginese were bleeding 2.8%, tartar 39.25%, pocket of 4-5 mm depth, 50.47%, andpocket of 6 mm depth, 7.48%. Periodontal disease of Mandarnese ethnic were bleeding2.14%, tartar 53.57%, pocket of 4-5 mm depth 21.43%, and pocket of 6 mm depth22.86%. Therefore, the need for periodontal treatment for aging Buginese were brushingteeth instruct 100%, prophylaxis 97.19%, and restorative 7.46%. Aging Mandarnese;were brushing teeth instruction 100%, prophylaxis 97.85%, and restorative 22.86%.

Abstract

Dental caries is one of the most frequent tooth decays experienced by pre-school children which can interfere with their growth process. Maintenance instructions for oral health at home have been made byexperts. Theprogramemphasizes theprevention of caries. Parental participation is necessary in guiding, giving understanding, reminding, and providing thefacilities to children so they can maintain the cleanliness of their teeth and mouth. The purpose of this observationalanalytic cross sectional study was to determine the relation of mothers' knowledge of dental and oral health care anddental caries status of students atKusudarsini Kindergarten in Makassar. Research subjects consisted of 33 kindergartenstudents who attended and participated in the study and returned questionnaire study. Pearson correlation test was usedto see the correlation. Correlation between the mother's knowledge and the value of df-t, showed r = -0.263 and p =0.133,which means there is no statistically significant relationship between knowledge of mothers with dental caries status ofchildren. This study concluded that there is no significant relationship between mothers' knowledge of dental and oralhealth with their children’s caries status. The better the mother's knowledge, the lower df-t value.

Abstract

To determine nutritional status among a school children of Barru Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, in relation with gingivitis and dental caries severity. Cross-sectional study. A total of 127 school children in the age range of 9-12 years from Barru Regency were included in this study as a sample of simple random sampling. Nutritional status of children (BMI index), degree of gingival inflammation (using chi-square test statistic), and missing teeth (DMF-T index) were recorded. Additional information was collected using a questionnaire survey regarding knowledge about dental health, dietary habits, and oral health behaviors. The data were processed using the program Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). A group of who severe underweight (102 children), had higher odds for mild gingivitis (GI 79.4%) than others group of who has an ideal weight (16 children), had mild gingivitis (GI 62.5%). Children, who severe underweight, had higher odds for moderate caries (38.2%) than others group of who has an ideal weight, had moderate caries (18.8%). Based on chi-square test, there are correlation of nutritional status and dental caries severity (p=0.000<p=0.05). There is a relationship of nutritional status with gingivitis and dental caries severity among a school children.
