Abstract

Clinically speaking, parotid gland tuberculosis is a rare case. Its diagnostic values are hard to determine as it has clinical similarities with neoplasms. Mistakes during diagnosis happen quite often thus additional layer of examinations are required to be conducted. An 18-year-old woman was referred from a privately-owned hospital with initial diagnosis of infected parotic sinistra tumor. Physical examination discovered a swelling on her sinistra parotid gland and a lump at the colli sinistra region. Ultrasound scan showed benign hypoechoic areas and cystic regions at the left of submandibular muscle which then expanded towards the neck. Results from the PPD5TU (-), BTA 3X (1X positive) and FNAB pointed out an existing a/r parotid and colli sinistra or Tuberculous abscess. The diagnosis of parotid gland tuberculosis is often established after conducting superficial parotidectomy. During this discussion we will present and elaborate a case of parotid gland tuberculous abscess which was diagnosed with PPD5TU, BTA and FNAB. The patient managed to be cured with OAT distribution and no recurrences were recorded afterward. Parotid gland tuberculous abscess is rarely found in clinics. Tuberculosis examination (including PPD5TU and BTA) and FNAB need to be conducted to prevent unnecessary treatment and medical operations.

Abstract

Objective: To review the literature and to present the report of a case with bifid mandibular canal. Methods: A cone-beam computed tomography scan with incidental finding of bifid mandibular canal was studied and presented in different sections. Results: The MC is a bilateral channel in the mandible that gives the passage to the inferior alveolar nerve, artery, and vein. It usually presents as a single canal where a variation in anatomy has been reported. The bifid mandibular canal is such an anatomic variant where it splits into two canals. Conclusion: The role of CBCT scans can be emphasized while performing procedures on posterior mandibular region, as it can provide the vital information regarding anatomical variation to avoid iatrogenic complication.

Abstract

Acrylic resin being has been used in dentistry since 1946. Apple vinegar solutioncurrently popular as healthy supplement drink. It consists of tanin (fenol), acid, andother subtances. Fenol and acid are able to chemically damage to acrylic resin. Thepurpose of this study was to investigate the impact strength of heat cured acrylic resinafter immersed in apple vinegar solution. This experiment was carried out on the heatcured acrylic resin sample of size 65 x 10 x 2.5 mm. The immersion periods variedfrom 45 minutes, 11 days, and 17 days. There were 42 samples, divided into 21samples for three treatment groups and 21 samples for three control groups. Theresult showed that there were significant differences of acrylic resin strength afterimmersion in apple vinegar at 45 minutes and 17 days. The conclusion was the longerimmersion time of acrylic resin in apple vinegar would reduce the impact strength.
