Abstract

Shisha is a water pipe that tobacco extract and fruit scented burnt using coal. It produces the smoke through the vessel and inhaled using a hose with good taste. The culture of shisha smoking is popular in Midle East country that curently has been also entering Indonesia. The side effect of shisha smoking habit is still very rare reported. Aim of this study is to describe the oral mucosa condition of shisha user. A preliminary observasional study was conducted at several sisha cafe at South Jakarta. Under informed consent, subject with habit of tobacco and shisha smoker were included. Sociodemographic data (age, gender, duration, frequency of smoking), salivary flow rate and oral mucosa changes were documented. Eighteen subjects were recruited into this study. Most of shisha smoker was also tobacco smoker. Shisha was more practiced by male at  age (15-24 years old). The oral mucosa changes such as keratosis, melanosis, leukoedema, coated tongue, gingivitis and xerostomia were found on subject with habit of tobacco smoking habit only or both shisha and tobacco smoking. In conclusion apparently the shisha smoking habit may casue oral mucosa changes almost the same with tobacco smoking habit

Abstract

Orthodontic treatment requires complete planning. Various analyzes is needed to determine the treatment plan; one ofthem is analysis of tooth size differences or Bolton analysis. Orthodontic treatments in Dental Hospital of HasanuddinUniversity do not apply Bolton analysis, so it is necessary to know the overview of Bolton index of the cases that have beentreated. This observational descriptive study was conducted in Department of Orthodontics, Dental Hospital ofHasanuddin University in March-May 2012. The samples were patients who completed treatment in 2010-2011. A total of156 samples consisting of 117 females and 39 males. The result showed that the non-intervention group Ideal AnteriorBolton Ratios and group Overall Bolton Ratio <93.21% have a tendency orthodontic treatment success rate, higher thanthe other groups. While the group Overall Bolton Ratio <89.39% showed the lowest successful rate of orthodontictreatment. The conclusion is the case with interventions of extraction, slicing, and expansion showed inconsistenciestendency of the three categories of orthodontic treatment outcome assessment, namely canine position, overjet, andoverbite.

Abstract

Individual perceptions towards denture wear’s are different from one to another, which are affected by number andlocation of missing teeth, age, sex, functional factors, esthetic, cultural factors, socioeconomy and education. Thepurpose of this study is to analyze the perceptions towards denture replacement among a rural community whoexperienced tooth loss based on age groups, sex and education in Desa Ujung Rambung Kecamatan Pantai CerminKabupaten Serdang Bedagai in February 2010. This study was an analytical observatory study. Samples are 200subjects who lost at least one tooth, excluding third molar. Chi-square test shows no significant difference betweenperceptions of appearance, mastication and speech and age groups, no significant difference between perceptions ofappearance, mastication and speech and sex, and no significant difference between perceptions of mastication andspeech and education (p>0,05), but shows statistically significant difference between perception of appearance andeducation (p=0,004). It can be concluded that the overall perceptions of the rural community is poor.

Abstract

Haruan is Kalimantan’s indigenous fish which has the potency to accelerate wound healing. Haruan extract has substantial properties such as albumin, Zn, Cu, and Fe to accelerate wound healing. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of haruan extract on reepithelialization of wistar rats’ buccal mucosa wound healing on day 3, 5, 7, and 10 histopathologically. This study was true experimental with posttest with control design. Samples were divided in 16 treatment groups, haruan extract 25%, 50%, 100% treatment groups and aquadest treatment group as negative control, each treatment was performed for 10 days. Epithelial thickness count reached its peak on day 10. Mean epithelial thickness scoring of each group was 50.40 µm; 56.85 µm; 62.81 µm; 38.28 µm respectively. Two way Anova and Post Hoc LSD tests presented there was a significant difference between negative control and haruan extract groups. Haruan extract treatment significantly increases epithelial thickness count in wound healing process.

Abstract

Modern Dentistry tends to achieve esthetic and efficiency of treatment. Patient will be interfered with edentulouscondition in longterm, especially for anterior tooth. Minimal tooth preparation and short visiting time will be chosenby most of patients. Resin-retained fixed partial denture can be the choice of treatment for partially edentulous tooth,as definitive prosthethic or interim prosthetic. An aspect for the succesfull resin-retained fixed partial denture is thedesign of bridgework. Many dentistsare avoid to provide adhesive bridge for their patients because of its high failurerates. This paper discussed about resin-retained fixed partial denture design as information for the dentists to get theright design for succes rate guarantee.

Abstract

Oral infections can be caused by the many microorganisms that occupy the oral cavity. Tongue is one of thevulnerable areas of the oral cavity occupied by microorganisms, in which colonized bacteria may cause disease.Mechanical tongue cleansing using tongue scraper can reduce anaerobic bacteria on dorsal of the tongue. Theobjective of this study was to observe the difference of anaerobic bacteria amount on dorsal of the tongue before andafter mechanical tongue cleansing using tongue scraper. This was laboratory experimental study with sampleconsists of 25 students selected by random sampling method. The results showed that the amount of bacteria isdecreased approximately 28% after tongue cleansing using tongue scraper. Based on the statistical analysis with tteston α=0.05, there is a difference on the amount of anaerobic bacteria on dorsal of the tongue before and aftermechanical tongue cleansing using tongue scraper.

Abstract

Propolis, the resinous hive product by bees, is important in the defence of the hive. It is know that extract of propolisexhibits such pharmacological activities as antimicrobia, antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflamatory, immunostimulatoryand promote wound healing. The objective of this studywas to investigate the influence of the propolis on theformation of collagen in the wound healing process of thesubcutan injury of mice that were induced withActinobacillus actinomyctemcomitans (A.actinomyctemcomitans)Thisstudyapplied 24 female BALB/c mice of 2 - 3 monthsof age with the weight of 20 -30 grams. On the first day thewhole population were injected withA.actinomyctemcomitans subcutanly. The second day micewere randomly devided into two groups that was the groupwith special treatment and the controlled ones. The groupunder treatment were given the extract of propolis 100mg/kg body weight every day. While the controlled oneswere only given aquades.Histological observation was conducted upon each groupon the third, seventh and fourteenth days after A.actinomyctemcomitans injection. There-suits of theobservation was based on the density collagen fiber. Thedata obtained then analyzed by using Mann-Whitney U test. The results of the present study indicated that theadministration of 100 mg/kg BWpropolis peroral maystimulate collagen synthesis.

Abstract

Patients with visual impairment experienced debris, calculus and a high index of oral hygiene. Low salivary flow anddifficulty in cleaning the oral cavity in patients with visual impairment caused high accumulation of plaque that causesa decrease in the pH of saliva. Low pH of saliva affects the balance of the composition of inorganic email. Calcium isthe largest inorganic content of the email, thus dissolving calcium email can be an indication of enameldemineralization. This study aimed to determine the solubility of calcium in saliva of blind patients, and salivary pHrelationship with the solubility of calcium. This experimental laboratory study used saliva taken from 8 blind patientsand artificial saliva as a medium of enamel pieces soaking for 24 hours. Dissolved calcium levels were measured byatomic absorption spectrophotometer. The results showed that the solubility of calcium in the saliva of blind patientsgreater than the control group (p<0.05). Pearson correlation test demonstrate the relationship between salivary pHand solubility of calcium enamel, so the lower the pH the greater enamel calcium dissolution. It was concluded that themagnitude of the solubility of calcium enamel due to decreased of salivary pH.

Abstract

Modulus of elasticity is one of the mechanical properties of composite resins affects the resistance to deformation, the strength of bonding with tooth structure and wear resistance. Modulus of elasticity is determined by the volumefraction of filler particles as the inorganic phase composite resin. This literature study aims to evaluate the size, shape and type of filler particles that affect the modulus of elasticity for composite resin. In a constant volumefraction, the larger size of filler material tends to make more rigid while irregular shape of particles produceshigher modulus of elasticity than spherical form of particles. In addition, the type of filler particles also determinesthe modulus of elasticity for resin composite, such as silica as the main type of filler particles will enhance themodulus of elasticity whereas zirconium can result in a higher stiffness. In order to get composite resin restorationwith appropriate modulus of elasticity the necessary knowledge about the effect of different filler particle isrequired.

Abstract

Teeth dimension is the factor influenced the incidence of toothimpaction. The most related factor with teeth dimension is teeth form. This study was aimed to determine the effect of teeth form on theincidence of lower third impaction. It was carried out on Buginese andTorajanese in South Sulawesi. The samples consist of 1! 5 Bugineseand 115 Torajanese, the age range from 20-25 years old with allnatural mandibular teeth including second molar. After impression ofboth upper and lower teeth was taken, each, tooth form wasdetermined by measurement with trubite tooth indicator. The frequencydistribution and coefficient corelation analysis test showed that therewas no significant difference between teeth form and incidence oflower third molar impaction in Buginese and Torajanese.
