Abstract

Objective : Nowadays several ways  have been evolved  to increase the hardness of the enamel surface as an effort to prevent caries. One of the alternatives that can be used is application of gel with herbal basic material.Material and Methods : The use of herbal basic material is preferred by people because the side effects are relatively small compared to synthetic drugs. Piper betle and cocoa beans are medicinal plants that is often used by people to inhibit caries. This is because piper betle and cocoa beans contain hardness that may influence the enamel surface. The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of piper betle extract gel and cocoa bean extract gel against the hardness of enamel surface. The samples, maxillary first premolar teeth, which has been extracted and does not have caries, were divided into 3 treatment groups: piper betle extract gel, cocoa bean extract gel, and distilled water as a negative control. Each treatment group consisted of 8 samples. The samples are decoronated in cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) areas and planted on orthoplast blocks with labial surface facing up. Samples were applied in labial enamel surface to 5, 15 and 35 minutes period times. Samples before and after the application in each treatment group were measured using Universal Hardness Tester. Data were collected and analyzed using ANNOVA Repeated test.Results : Showed there were significant differences (p <0.05) of enamel surface hardness before and after the application of cocoa bean extract gel. There were no significant differences (p> 0.05) of enamel surface hardness before and after the application of piper betel extract gel and distilled water.Conclusion : Therefore it can be concluded that cocoa been extract gel is more effective to increase the hardness of email surface.

Abstract

Odontogenic myxofibroma is a rare, benign, but locally aggressive neoplasm found exclusively in the jaws. It has a predilection to occurs in the 2nd–3rd decade. The lesion often grows without symptoms and presents as a painless swelling. Most common clinical variant is associated with the impacted tooth and shows local invasion. The surgical treatment of these tumors consists of complete enucleation or radical excision. 15th year old girl with a slow growing, painless swelling in the left mandibular region since 2 years. Results of a radiological examination revealed a multilocular radiolucency extending from first molar up to coronoid process with impacted 3rd molar. Biopsy was done, and the histopathological examination showed a myxofibroma. Hemimandibulectomy was done and the tumor mass was resected along with it. Then the mandibular was reconstructed with AO plate. In this case hemimandibulectomy was done due to high rate of recurrence, surgical treatment through bone resection is the most indicated treatment modality and the patient must be followed‑up closely for years. AO Plate for mandibular reconstruction was considered because it was safe, rapid, easy and tissue tolerance is good. The neoplasm diagnosed on the basis of radiographic imaging modalities and histopathological examination.

Abstract

Enamel decalcification around and under orthodontic appliances have been known asa significant clinical problem, in fact an orthodontic patient is a high risk person.Whether this high risk due to oral hygiene related to orthodontic appliance or as acause of phosporic acid contained in zinc oxyphosphate cement that have beencommonly used to bracket adhesion. The purpose of this article was to provide adescription of enamel decalcification process and prevention of decalcificationfollowing orthodontic treatment. Prevention of enamel decalcification followingorthodontic treatment can be performed by polishing tooth surface after treatment,using tooth paste contained fluoride, rinsing, maintenance good oral hygiene, toothbrushing, and other additional oral hygiene method.

Abstract

Cleft lip and palate abnormalities in infant are the most common birth defect. This abnormality caused by failure of thefusing at the middle side of the facial frame on the week 4 to 10 of pregnancy. This abnormalities may occur togetheror separately. The coordination of the lip, tongue, palate and jaws become inadequate so there is changes in the abilityto suck, to swallow, weak muscle function and oral structure function so that the infant maybe unable to suck properly.Feeding plate use to overcome disproblem, so that the infant can have good nutrition. In infant with complete bilateralcleft lip and palate with protrusive premaxilla the utilization of this feeding device with the strapping extra oral rubberelastic orthodontic and hypapix is sure. In this paper will be discuss the utilization of device with the addition elasticorthodontic rubber in patient with complete bilateral cleft lip and palate. This feeding intervention is quiet effective, thesucking reflects of the infant become stronger and the premaxilla profile becomes more retruded that makes thesurgeon get an optimal surgical result easier.

Abstract

Chin contour and position is important component in facial balance. Deformities ofchin may occur as isolation deformity or associated with other dentofacialdeformities. This is a case report of 15-year old girl with chief complaint of chindeformity, and sliding genioplasty has been performed without any complication.

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the safety of a pomegranate seeds ethanolic extract in Swiss Webster mice.Material and Methods: Pomegranate seed’s ethanolic extracts were evaluated for minimum inhibitory concentration against streptococcus sanguis ATCC 10556, using microdilution method through 96-wells microplate. In acute toxicity test, 12 females and 12 males Swiss Webster mice weighing 20–30 grams were divided into four groups, each consisting of 3 females and 3 males. Three groups were orally given of sample with concentrations 0.2% equivalent to 40 mg/kg, 0.4% equivalent to 80 mg/kg, and 0.8% equivalent to 160 mg/kg, while the control group was given distilled water. Observations were made at 30, 60, and 90 minutes, for 24 hours and 7 days.Results: The MIC against Streptococcus sanguis was on 2000 ppm concentration and until 24 hours observation no lethal effect occurred on the mice, but at the 7 days observation in the group of 0.8% per kilogram body weight, the lethal effect occurred at one mice.Conclusion: The ethanolic extract of pomegranate seeds has antibacterial effect and no acute systemic toxicity, which can be considered safe on the use as oral topical solution since the toxic dose is greater than 160 mg/kg of body weight.

Abstract

An occlusal splint is a removable appliance usually made of acrylic, that fits over the occlusal and incisal surfaces ofthe teeth in one arch, creating precise occlusal contact with the teeth of the opposing arch. Occlusal splint has severalfunctions, one of which is to temporarily provide an temporary occlusion that allows the temporomandibular joints(TMJ) to make the most othopedically stable joint position. Occlusal splint is also used to protect the teeth and itssupportive structure from abnormal forces that may create breakdown and/or tooth wear. Occlusal splint is reversibleand noninvasive treatment, which is most important in treating temporomandibular disorders (TMD) with manycausative factors involved. Many types of splints have been suggested for the treatment of TMD, but the most frequentlyused are the stabilization splint and the anterior positioning splint. The purpose of this paper is to describe the types ofocclusal splints and indication used for the treatment of TMD.

Abstract

Orthodontic treatment usually involves tooth movement. The orthodontic force as anextrinsic mechanical stimulus, evokes a biologic cellular response in the periodontalsupporting ligament. At early stage, it causes inflammation of periodontal tissuewhich is followed by the release of cytokines, T cell, B cell, and then MMP enzyme.MMP-8 (collagenase 2) is a member of matrixin subfamily plays an important role inperiodontal ligament remodeling. It has capability to maintain the cellular structure,integrity, activity, and function of extracellular matrix of periodontal tissue. The maincomponent of extracellular matrix is tissue protein, i.e. collagen, fibronectin, andglicosaminoglycan. During orthodontic tooth movement, collagen degradation occursin extracellular matrix of periodontal tissue and alveolar bone. As a result, it enablesthe release of cells from extracellular environment, for example osteoblast moves toapposition and osteoclast to resorption sites that enable the tooth movement. Theexpression and level of MMP-8 can be assessed in the gingival crevicular fluid. Theaim of this review is to describe the role of MMP-8 in orthodontic tooth movement.

Abstract

In the case of losing many teeth and the residual teeth have short clinical crown, design of the denture may hybriddenture. Hybrid denture is a removable partial denture with metal frame which have retention in the form ofprecision attachment. In short clinical crown, placement of crowns and the use of traction can be a problem,because there is no or lack of retention. In the manufacture of hybrid denture with precision attachment retention,using abutment with short clinical crowns is contraindicated. But in some literatures mentioned that the rest of theclinical crown height of not less than 2 mm can still be used as an abutment, but the abutments must be modified,such as making a longer preparation towards cervical edge. In several studies and literature, it is mentioned that toimprove the retention of the crown, the axial wall of abutment must be 4-6°. This article is aimed to report the clinical success of using the hybrid denture on abutment teeth which have short clinical crowns in a patient woman

Abstract

Neem is one of the traditional medicine known by society as immunomodulator. On the other hand, 80% of oralinfection diseases is caused by C. albicans. This research is aimed to explain the phagocytosis activities on wistarrats which were inoculated with C. albicans and fed with neem leaves. There are 5 groups, namely control group(KO)with no treatment, the other treatment groups were classified into 4 groups. First group (KP1)was inoculatedwith C. albicans only. KP2 was fed with 50 mg/day/kg BW aqueous extracts from neem leaves, then inoculated withC. albicans start from day 8-21. KP3 was fed with 100 mg/day/kg BW aqueous extract from neem leaves, theninoculated with C. albicans start from day 8-21. KP4 was fed with 200 mg/day/kg BW aqueous extract from neemleaves, then inoculated with C. albicans start from day 8-21. On day 22, the tongue was swabbed for each group,then cut for immunohistochemistry preparation. The study that there was significant difference showed that therewere different results computed using anova, HSD test, and linier regression. The conclusion was neem leavesincreased the phagocytosis activity of wistar rats, inoculated with C.albicans.
