THE ROLE OF LITERATURE IN INDONESIAN DEVELOPMENT PROCESS Wati, Erna

In Indonesia, literature has been one of critical media to respond to the political and social issues. This study reviewed three literary works of the three Indonesian writers from different era: Bumi Manusia (1980) by Pramoedya Ananta Toer, Potret Pembangunan dalam Puisi (1980) by W.S. Rendra and Laskar Pelangi (2008) by Andrea Hirata. In this study, the writer analyzed how each literary work conceive the idea of political and educational development and how they contribute positive impacts to the development process of Indonesia society. The findings confirm each literary work has some similarities to the other in regards to contribute the idea of Indonesia development. The three authors agreed that education is an effective aspect to develop Indonesia society. They also have the same opinion that education which has a better quality is not always come from the formal institution. They depict a wider concept of education which is obtained from the fantastic culture and moral values.Keywords: Indonesian literature, the role of literature, development

THE ANALYSIS OF STUDENT’S WRITING BEFORE AND AFTER THE IMPLEMENTATION OF READ-TO-WRITE APPROACH Rosmawan, Hana

The focus of this article is on the analysis of student’s writing before and after the implementation of Read-to-Write Approach. Read-to-write approach is one of strategies of how to write by reading the articles what other writers have written. This study aimed to find out how the students’ writing skill can be improved through the implementation of read-to-write approach. This research used the instruments of writing tests including pre-test and post-test. The finding showed that students’ writing skill could be improved through the implementation of read-to-write approach during one cycle classroom action research which consisted of four meetings. Actually, this article searched deeply to find out how the differences between the writing results of the student after and before the implementation of read-to-write approach. The analysis was conducted by using analytic scoring rubric. The results of the analysis showed improvement on each aspect of writing.Keywords: read-to-write approach, reading and writing skill, holistic scoring rubric, analytic scoring rubric

This article describes the dominant local languages with the highest number of usage areas in Malinau Regency of North Kalimantan Province. The data in this article is based on and become part of the Research Repot on The Profile of Local Languages in Malinau Regency (Arifin, et.al, 2015). The research was designed in qualitatif approach and descriptive methode toward the local languages used in the daily communication of the people in the regency. Data colleting was done with interview and recording techniques. Data analysis was carried out with tracing technique. The decision of weather or not a status of a local language belong to dominant one is based on the intensity of usage variabel. The criteria applied was that when a language is used in the daily communication by the largest number of population of a particular area (desa), the status of that language belongs a dominant one in that particular area (desa). Meanwhile a language with a minor number of speakers was labeled as the complementary language. Data analysis indicated that there are a total of 21 dominant local languages and another 7 complementary languages in Malinau Regency. Three out of the total 21 dominant local languages with the highest number of usage areas are respectively as fallows: Punan Language 30 out of a total of 106 areas/desas (28.30%), Lundayeh Language 24 areas/desas (22.64%), and Lepuk Tau Language 8 areas/desas (7.54%). FENOMENA ‘BLACK SWAN’ DALAM KISAH ADA APA DENGAN CINTA? Dahlan, Dahri

This paper analyzed the ‘black swan’ phenomenon in the story “Ada Apa dengan Cinta?” ‘Black swan’ phenomenon is an event with a content structure that has three characteristics: (1) it is different from the others and unpredictable, (2) it has major effect, and (3) after the event happened, it finally becomes explainable and predictable. The analysis of the phenomenon in the story was conducted using structuralism approach that covers the theory of plot and character. Both theories are used since plot makes the story flows and characters play the plot. As the result of the analysis, it was found that the never-predicted events, which caused major effect to the character Cinta, were in fact explainable and predictable.Keywords: Black swan phenomenon, major effect, structuralism, plot, character.

ANALYZING THE PORTRAYAL OF PATRIARCHAL OPPRESSION TOWARDS THE FEMALE CHARACTERS IN J.K. ROWLING’S THE CASUAL VACANCY: A REFLECTIVE POST-FEMINIST CRITICS Fitri, Nurliana; Suparti, Erni

The oppression and subordination towards woman mostly happened because of the patriarchal system which exists in the society. The purposes of this study are to analyze the portrayal of patriarchal symbols in the society of Pagford Town in J.K. Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy and the patriarchal system abuse or oppression towards the female characters in J.K. Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy. The results of the study show six symbols of patriarchy which is found in the novel. They are female as sex objects in public patriarchy, male as villain in public patriarchy, male as villain in private patriarchy, female as the faulty in private patriarchy, female as mother or angel in the house in private patriarchy and female as damsel in distress in private patriarchy. The study also shows the indication of abuse occurred to several female characters. The patriarchy system generated from the participation of the male and female is the main cause of the sustainability of female oppression and subordination in the society.Keywords: patriarchy, symbol, oppression, abuse, victimization, The Casual Vacancy
