CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS ON PAN POLITICAL BANNER CAMPAIGN USING FAIRCLOUGH THREE DIMENSIONAL MODEL Aji Muhammad Akbar; Roby Salmon Agasi; Tito Yowata

This study was conducted in order to explain of Partai Amanat Nasional (PAN) political banner campaign uniqueness within 2018-2019 campaign periods. This study focused on the linguistic feature which employed and discursive technique in the banner. The data was collected from internet and limited only to banner in West Java province. Fairclough 3D-model is used as framework in this study to see the relation of language and it implication in society. The findings disclosed that the whole banner discourse, including images, design, and language supports the construction of message in the banner. It was also PAN political banner campaign in West Java act as entertainment to the readers.

THE ANALYSIS OF TRANSLATION TECHNIQUES AND TRANSLATION QUALITY OF DIRECTIVES SPEECH ACT IN THE LITTLE PRINCE NOVEL Siirikanda Sakulpimolrat

This research deployed translation of directive speech acts with the descriptive qualitative method. Its objective was to describe the translation technique of the directive speech acts and to evaluate the quality of the translation based on accuracy, acceptability, and readability. It employed document analysis and focus group discussion for data collection. It was concluded words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and contained one type of directive speech act. Data were collected through content analysis and validated by rate through focus group discussion (FGD). The result shows that are 14 techniques which are applied in directives speech act translating, those are established equivalence, variation, modulation, implication, explication, discursive creation, transposition, paraphrase, compensation, addition, reduction, borrowing, literal, and generalization. The research result concludes that the deployment of appropriate translation techniques produces a good transition. The translation techniques affect the translation quality. Established equivalence produces in the accurate quality of the translation. Discursive creation results in a less accurate translation. Moreover, the imperfection of translation quality is affected by the use of reduction techniques.

In a metaphorical expression can contain a concept that describes a person's emotional experience (Kövecses, 2000). The following study aim to find the conceptualization of emotional metaphors—happy, sad, fear, angry, and love—on students of Univesitas Indonesia. Sixteen respondents, seven males and nine females, participated in this research. Respondent’s data collected using self-report in a qualitative form. Research result appear to support statement and previous studies which explains that metaphors apply not only as linguistic feature but also giving concrete picture in abstract or conceptual matters. Besides theoretical benefits, researcher also aim to add more contextual studies, specifically in bahasa Indonesia, regarding the relationship between emotion-related conceptual metaphors through the production of metaphors relating to emotional experience. This study has limitations regarding the lack of depths in studies about culture, considering previous studies by Yu (1995) and Nguyen (2013) highlighted that cultural differences influence the various production of emotional-conceptual metaphors. Future research can incorporate interview and experiment to ignite the emotion-related metaphors.

Film is one communication media to deliver message. This study investigates speech act in the film by using pragmatics approarch. Children film is chosen since children indirectly get new vocabulary in the form of word, phrase, or sentence through film. This study is entitled â€˜A Pragmatic Study on the Function of Speech Act in Disney Princess Filmâ€™. It covers one important thing, such as the function of speech act in children film. This is descriptive qualitative study which reveals the data collection on the film transcript through the characterâ€™s dialogue in the film. The result of this study are as follow. The function of speech act in the children film are a) representative speech act is used to stating, insisting, reporting, summarizing, describing, proposing, and confronting; b) expressive speech act is used to asking apologize, praising, regretting, showing like or love, and showing fear; c) commisive speech act is used to promising, offering, and rejecting; and d) directive speech act is used to commanding, ordering, requesting, asking, and forcing. This result shows the function of speech act which is used in children film. Those speech act is usually imitated and restated by the children who watch movie in their daily life.

KONSTRUKSI KAUSATIF DALAM NOVEL BERBAHASA ARAB RICHLATU ILAL-GHAD KARYA TAUFIK EL-HAKIM Umam, Khaerul

Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan konstruksi kausatif pada novel berbahasa Arab ‘Richlatu Ilal-Ghad’ karya Taufik El-Hakim. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan tipologi linguistik. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Metode pengumpulan data menggunakan metode simak dengan menggunakan Teknik catat. Sedangkan metode analisis data menggunakan metode agih dengan teknik dasar bagi unsur langsung. Teknik lanjutan menggunakan teknik baca markah. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) Konstruksi kausatif leksikal dapat ditemukan beberapa contoh dan pola verba yang dipakai merupakan verba pola I. (2) Konstruksi kausatif morfologis dapat ditemukan pada verba pola II, IV, dan X. (3) Konstruksi kausatif perifratis dapat ditemukan pada pola verba.

CATEGORY SHIFTS IN TRANSLATING TEXT FROM ENGLISH INTO INDONESIAN (AN APPLIED LINGUISTICS STUDY) Arif Topan, Tegar

ABSTRACTThis paper is conducted in order to find out the shifts in novel of Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard into Indonesian. Shifts are inevitable in rendering text. According to Catford (1965:80) in Hatim (2001:15) classified the translation shifts into two major types of shifts are identified: Level Shift and Category Shift. Category shift could be as structure, unit, class, and intra-system shift. Problems discussed in this research: 1) what kinds of category shifts found in the novel of Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard? 2) what is the dominant category shift found in the novel of Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard? The data of this research were taken from the novel of Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard and its translation by Reni Indardini. The findings would show: 1) all kinds of category shifts found in the novel of Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, 2) the dominant category shift found is unit shift.Keywords: literature, linguistics, translation, shifts, category shift AbstrakMakalah ini dibuat untuk mengetahui perubahan dalam penerjemahan pada novel Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard ke dalam bahasa Indonesia. Pergeseran tidak bisa dihindari dalam menerjemahkan teks. Menurut Catford (1965: 80) dalam Hatim (2001: 15) mengklasifikasikan pergeseran terjemahan ke dalam dua jenis pergeseran utama yang diidentifikasi: Level Shift dan Category Shift. Category Shift dapat berupa pergeseran structure, unit, class, dan intra-system. Masalah yang dibahas dalam penelitian ini: 1) jenis perubahan kategori apa yang ditemukan dalam novel Magnus Chase and the Gods Asgard? 2) apa pergeseran kategori dominan yang ditemukan dalam novel Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard? Data penelitian ini diambil dari novel Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard dan terjemahannya oleh Reni Indardini. The objectives of this study are: 1) to identify the target and learning needs of English Conversation Club students in learning English and 2) to design English learning materials for English Conversation Club in SMAN 2 Kota Pekalongan.This research is classified into Research and Development (R & D). This research was conducted through the following steps i.e.; (1) conducting the needs analysis, (2) analyzing syllabus, (3) designing the material. The subjects of this research were the ECC students of grade ten in SMAN 2 Kota Pekalongan. The data were collected by distributing questionnaires to the students. The questionnaires were administered to find out the needs of the ECC students in learning English.In this research, the researcher designed three units of learning materials with eight tasks in each unit. They are ‘Congratulation’, ‘Complimenting’, and ‘Accepting and Refusing Invitation’.Key Words: Learning Materials, Speaking, ECC

The purpose of this study to find a variety confirmation language style, and the influence of stilistika dominant aspects in his President official speech. The study was descriptive qualitative research. The data in this study is a lingual unit in the form of words, phrases, or clauses that contains stilistika study. The data sources in this study is official speech of the President of the Proclamation of 70th Independence. The data acquisition techniques is see and note. The results of this research is there are 10 stylistic confirmation style, apositif, redundancy, repetition, alliteration, paralisme, tautalogi, sigmatisme, climax, eksklamasio and enumerasio. The dominant confirmation language is enumerasio with 27.7%. KONSTRUKSI VERBA GERAK DIREKSIONAL DALAM BAHASA BANJAR Ahmad Imam Muttaqin

Directional motion verbs construction classify a language into two types: satellite-framed language and verb-framed language. Based on two components: ‘path’ that contained directional meaning, and ‘manner of motion’ that contained the way verbs/something done. The concept of language typology related with directional motion verbs construction pioneered by Talmy (1985) is to put it universally, and actually it does work when it faced with Banjarese which is the main language of South Borneo. There is no one ever researched about directional motion verbs in Banjarese before, so it is important to make one and hopefully it would trigger another interest from people to research Banjarese. This paper aims to discuss directional motion verbs in Banjarese, to classify the frame of Banjarese, and also to evaluate whether Talmy’s typology is relevant for Banjarese. The results of the analysis show that directional verbs in Banjarese are using preposition, so Banjarese can be said as a satellite-framed language. The adjectival resultatives that also one of the character of satellite-framed language according to Talmy’s statement also can be found in Banjarese.Key Words: Directional motion verbs, Language typology, Banjarese

This research entitled ”An Analysis of Figurative Language in Onlen Short Story Posted on The Jakarta Post” is aimed to found some kinds of figurative language used; she also studies about the meaning of figurative language used in selected short story on online the Jakarta Post. This research employs the library research in the sense that the researcher visited the libraries to get the data. There are two kinds of data in this research: (1) primary sources and (2) secondary sources. Primary source is firsthand information. Then secondary sources provide secondhand information. In this study, the primary source is short story gained from online Jakarta Post. Then, the secondary source was from books, e-books, journals, English dictionary, observation and documentation that were related to the research which was gained.After the data are gathered, they classified, analyzed, and interpreted by using several theories namely: (1) the theory of Figurative Language by Perrine (1982:61)), Short Story by Klarer (1998:13).Some of the important research findings are presented as follows. First, figurative language has many types, such as metaphor, simile, personification, metonymy, irony, symbol, hyperbole, paradox, alliteration, allusion, onomatopoeia, and many others. Henceforth, all kinds of figurative language cannot be found in all work of literature. There are some types mostly found in the literature, such as simile, personification, hyperbole, metaphor, irony, and metonymy.In this case, the writer only conducted the research in short story. The writer found some types of figurative language in the short story; those are personification, simile, symbol, and onomatopoeia. Personification is one of types of figurative language mostly found in the short story posted on online Jakarta Post. Keywords: Figurative, language, Jakarta post
