Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between exposure to textism and spelling competency. A quasi-experimental research design was used to determine how the independent variable (exposure to textism) influenced the dependent variable (spelling competency). A purposive sampling technique was employed to select 92 Grade 10 learners for the study. A preliminary questionnaire was administered to gather information about the learners’ cell phone ownership and text messaging behavior, and to further divide the sample into Experiment and Control groups. The Experiment group comprised learners who owned a smartphone and participated in text messaging, while learners who did not own a cell phone and were not actively involved in text messaging were assigned to the Control group. Data collection involved a dictation exercise and a creative writing task. The results of the dictation task showed a positive correlation between exposure to textism and spelling competency. Participants in the experiment groups, who owned a smartphone and were actively involved in text messaging, outperformed those in the control group, who did not own a cell phone or participate in text messaging. However, the results of the creative writing task presented a mixed trajectory of findings. Although the Experiment group performed better than the Control group in terms of incorrect spelling frequency, wrong word/class usage, and word omission, they also registered a higher count of punctuation-based spelling errors, word-spacing errors, and textism forms.

Abstract

This study examines the segmentation and pronunciation accuracy of the alveodental phoneme thāʾ [tˤ] in Arabic based on students' reading tests. By employing a qualitative descriptive method with a content analysis design, the research seeks to obtain detailed descriptive data in the form of words and images. The Praat application is used to measure sound frequency from various sound sources, ensuring precise and comprehensive analysis. The results indicate that students face significant challenges in correctly pronouncing the phoneme [tˤ], with frequent articulation errors. These pronunciation difficulties are attributed to several factors, including the phonetic differences between the students' native languages and Arabic, the inherent complexity of Arabic phonemes, and the influence of various dialects or accents the students may possess. This study highlights the critical need for a thorough understanding of phoneme properties and emphasizes the importance of consistent practice to improve pronunciation accuracy of [tˤ]. By addressing these issues, educators can better support students in mastering Arabic pronunciation, ultimately enhancing their overall language proficiency. The findings of this research contribute to the broader field of phonetics and language education, offering valuable insights for language teachers and learners alike.

Abstract

Neologism, a term used in linguistics, refers to the creation and definition of new lexical items with new meanings. It is frequently employed in specialized contexts, necessitating the development of new language forms. This study aims to investigate neologisms emerging from gaming language and identify the types that predominantly occur during gameplay. Given that online gaming became a popular pastime during the pandemic, observing the new language arising from in-game chat boxes is particularly intriguing. The study includes conversations from three participants playing three different online games, collected over one day of gameplay. The findings reveal that abbreviations, acronyms, and repurposed standard English terms are prevalent forms of neologisms in gaming language. Abbreviations like "CC" and standard English terms such as "skin" and "clean" are among the most frequently mentioned by players. Interestingly, despite the conversations being in three different languages, the neologisms primarily appear in English.

Abstract

Teaching grammar within the language education landscape presents an enduring challenge for educators. The ongoing debate surrounding the effectiveness of explicit versus implicit instruction underscores the dynamic nature of pedagogical practices in this field. To address this debate and gain a comprehensive understanding of grammar instruction, this research focuses on exploring the drawbacks of both approaches within educational institutions. By examining the practical implications of explicit and implicit instruction, this study aims to provide insights into their application in real-world teaching contexts. Through qualitative research method, faculty members from private institutions in Peninsular Malaysia were engaged in interviews, enabling them to share their first-hand experiences and perspectives on implementing these instructional methods. The findings from these interviews revealed three main challenges faced by educators when teaching grammar. Among these challenges, time constraints emerged as a significant hurdle, impacting the quality and depth of grammar instruction provided to students. Moreover, the research reveals further insights into the diverse requirements and preferences of students, as well as the diverse teaching approaches employed by instructors. Such insights are crucial for guiding the creation of personalized instructional approaches that meet the specific needs of learners in higher education contexts.

Abstract

This paper examines the practice of written error correction from different perspectives in real classroom contexts. Although a plethora of research has been done in different contexts, the subject is least exploited in Ghana, especially in senior High school contexts. This paper reports on a qualitative study of written corrective feedback practices in three Senior High schools in Ghana. Drawing on Schmidt’s noticing hypothesis and Swain’s comprehensive output hypothesis models, the study aims to determine whether teachers’ written error corrections effectively direct students towards ‘noticing’ the gaps in their written ‘output’, thereby resulting in higher degrees of learnability. A sample size of 824 students was selected from five common course areas using a systematic random sampling strategy, while a purposive sampling strategy was used to select nine English language teachers who had at least three years of continuous experience from the three schools. The findings of the study indicate that teachers have positive beliefs about the potency of written error corrections in the development of language. However, variances in the choice of strategies, practices of teachers, and preferences of students result in the provision of non-targeted feedback which affects revision and learnability. This study recommends that teachers should collaborate with learners to provide more targeted corrections which would result in enhanced ‘noticing’ and improved learnability of the English language among Ghanaian students.

Abstract

This research aimed to identify and analyze the indicators of multiple intelligence theory as depicted in the movie The Karate Kid (2010). The researchers employed a documentation method for data collection and applied Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences, proposed in 1983, to validate their findings. To introduce innovative approaches for enriching educational materials, the study also reviewed previous research on multiple intelligence theory. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative methodology, the research thoroughly examined the movie’s content. The results indicated that six out of Gardner's nine intelligence indicators were illustrated in various scenes: spatial (visual) intelligence, musical (audio) intelligence, bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, intrapersonal intelligence, and naturalistic intelligence. These findings underscore the diverse ways in which multiple intelligences can be represented and recognized within cinematic narratives, providing a valuable framework for educational and psychological applications. The research highlights the potential of films like The Karate Kid as effective tools for demonstrating and teaching the principles of multiple intelligences, thereby enriching educational practices and supporting holistic development.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to investigate grammatical errors made by learners when writing descriptive essays. 57 Grade 10 learners were purposively sampled to participate in the study. A preliminary assessment was conducted to inform the researchers’ selection criteria, and to ensure the selection of an information-rich learner sample that possessed participant qualities methodologically sought after by the researchers. The study adopted a qualitative research approach to allow the researchers to investigate the learners’ grammatical errors through a strategic administering of a descriptive essay writing task to elicit qualitative data from the sampled study participants. The sampled high school served as the case study site where an in-depth investigation of the grammatical errors made by Grade 10 learners when writing descriptive essays was carried out.  To collect data from the 57 sampled learners, a descriptive essay writing task was administered, whereby learners were required to write an essay of 500 words under invigilated classroom conditions. Corder’s Error Analysis model and Ellis’s Procedural Analysis were jointly applied to analyse the collected data.  Results of the study revealed that the participants committed grammatical errors that were categorised as sentence fragments, verb tense errors, concord errors, the use of contractions, sentence-initial conjunction, and inappropriate use of personal pronouns. These errors were mainly attributed to the influence of both the learners’ Sepedi home language and also their activity on social media platforms.
