Abstract

Bali's Sanur tourism sector is home to many well-known structures with unique, non-Balinese architectural styles. This paper aims to expose the Balinese physical-meaning system found in the Three Monkeys restaurant's architecture in Sanur. The approach is descriptive; first, the "physical" architecture is explained, followed by the "purpose of existence" and "essence." Open frontage, bottom level raised over the terrace, and an alang-alang roof supported by bamboo poles. There is an open figure to the left and north, with bamboo trees around it and a glass-block wall atop. a blend of Balinese traditional and modern architecture. The arrangement: an open pool acts as a mediator between the dining room, kitchen, and bathroom; the terrace is shaded by frangipani trees, and there is a place of prayer in the northeast corner. The upper rooms are conditioned, enclosed by glass walls, modern compared to the lower rooms. The terrace materials are traditional (alang-alang roof, parasol stone wall - bamboo), the lower dining room is a mix of traditional (bamboo wall, alang-alang roof, wooden furniture) and modern (polished concrete floor, glass-block wall), and the upper room is modern (frameless glass wall, stainless-steel railing). The traditional-modern Balinese blend is displayed through the building's figure, layout and materials.

Abstract

The traditional village of Gurusina is located in the Jerebu'u District, Ngada Regency, Flores, and is inhabited by three major tribes, namely Ago Ka’e, Ago Azi, and Kabe. The traditional houses in the Gurusina village are rich in traditional symbols originating from the traditions of its resident tribes. A fire incident that occurred in August 2018 resulted in the destruction of several traditional houses and the disappearance of symbols that had been preserved for generations. The purpose of this article is to find inspiration from the traditional symbols on the traditional houses in Gurusina village. The research method used is Ethnographic Research, where the researcher approaches the subject qualitatively to discover inspiration or foundations for the emergence of the form, function, and meaning of these symbols. The findings reveal that the symbols on the traditional houses in Gurusina village are inspired by flora, fauna, human and local beliefs. This means that the surrounding nature, human and local beliefs are the primary inspiration for the function, form, and meaning of the traditional symbols in the Gurusina village. This research theme is interesting for further investigation to understand and preserve traditional symbols in Indonesia.

Abstract

In order to gain illicit benefits or abuse power for one's own benefit, corruption is a type of dishonesty or a criminal offense committed by a person or organization in a position of authority. This study examined the effect of corruption on achievement of construction project goals. This study collected data through the use of structured questionnaire that were administered to registered professionals in Ondo State. The target population comprises of Quantity Surveyors, Architects, Builders, and Engineer. Sixty-one questionnaires were administered; fifty questionnaires were retrieved from professionals. The data retrieved were analyzed using descriptive statistics, mean score response analysis frequency and percentages. The study concluded that the three major effect of corruption on achievement of construction project are: increase in cost of materials, high cost of the construction project as results of inflated price of bill of quantities and un-realistic claims during the course of execution of the project, creation of monopoly and also it was concluded that corruption is having major effects on cost more than on quality, client’s satisfaction, time, safety. Moreover, the study recommends that corruption should be eradicated in order to prevent increase in the cost of materials, high cost of the construction project as results of inflated price of bill of quantities and un-realistic claims during the course of execution of the project, creation of monopoly.

Abstract

This research is conducted to determine the underlying reasons a particular theater group adjusts to a certain setting and conditions in order to maintain its continued presence in a location. One of the reasons previously identified for the acceptance and adaptation is the low affordability of housing. Therefore, qualitative design and grounded theory method were applied, and the habitation form of the group was observed to determine their dwelling adaptation. The results showed that the role of the government as patron was very important for the survival of groups, specifically in providing increasingly affordable housing for urban poor and catering for psychological and social welfare. Client was also discovered to have become increasingly attached to the housing assistance and considered patron as important figures and protectors. It was argued that certain stakeholders have an important role in producing residential designs to empower and maintain the survival of urban poor.

Abstract

Buildings in Indonesia, which has a humid tropical climate, receive direct exposure to sunlight on the roof. The influence of this heat will directly affect the space under the roof and will increase the temperature significantly. Heat transfer is often not taken into account carefully in building physics calculations, even though increasing temperature will affect energy consumption. This research was carried out to determine the distribution of heat and how to prevent the entry of solar heat through the HT-Flux software. The aim of this research is to analyze heat transfer patterns and prevention efforts in buildings. The research method used is an experimental method, where roof construction patterns are tested, to obtain the right roof construction in tropical areas. The result of this research is to obtain damping on the roof by testing it with HT-Flux software.

Abstract

Well known as one of the most crowded and problematic urban kampungs in ASEAN since 2020, Tambora has been struggle with health, fire, and social problems. Its density is related to the composition between solid and void especially on the boundary as they control the accessibility while influencing the overall gesture of the kampung. Unfortunately, the majority of research related to boundaries is more interested in delineation rather than 3D relationships. Further investigation is required to understand its series of volumetric composition, configuration, and orientation to comprehend its architecture as a continuation of its geometrical investigation. As boundaries are relatively considered more stable locations, they exhibit intensity, complexity, and hybridity between formal and informal. A diverse collection of houses at these particular locations displays specific language while providing correlation. Genomic tabulation is utilized to interpret the kampung massing series' spatial quality. The QGIS instrument converts lines into volumes, with steps are follows: 1) collection of data, 2) conversion of 2D into 3D, and 3) interpretation of the samples. By focusing on the massing series at the kampung boundaries, the typology and morphology are emerged, providing various gaps and potentials as alternative solutions for building the kampung network.

Abstract

The revitalisation of traditional market was prioritized by the Indonesian government to protect the unique socio-cultural space. This was achieved through a set of national standards designed to have a more organized and effective infrastructure to meet contemporary requirements. However, only a few have been able to comply with this high standard required. One of the distinct traditional markets without the capacity to fulfil the standards is Mangiran because of the limitations of the area. Therefore, this research investigated an alternative approach to integrate the urban fabric potential into the Mangiran market for the purpose of fulfilling the required standards. The approach was sued to review the national standard in order to have a new perspective and interpretation of traditional markets. The review was further assessed by collecting and analysing primary and secondary data using a qualitative method. The result showed that the integration of urban fabric into Mangiran market was advantageous in challenging the area limitation. This was achieved through the introduction of new types of customers to the market by diversifying the function using both tangible and intangible urban fabric potential.

Abstract

Oebobo District has the highest density level among all sub-districts in Kupang City. The impact of population growth and circulation is that the mobility of people and goods often occurs quickly, thus hampering efficient observation. This research highlights the need for accurate recognition to develop recommended effective and optimal space management and utilization. The focus of this research is population movement patterns by considering spatial structure. Quantitative descriptive research method used over the space syntax approach on QGIS and DepthMapX softwares. Quantification is carried out on the connectivity value to measure the level of connection in the road network and the integration value to reflect the integration between spaces. With the highest connectivity and integration scores, Oebobo District has the potential to become the city center or main activity center in Kupang City.

Abstract

The Republic of Indonesia's Ministry of Religion reports more than 700,000 mosques in the country. Insufficient research has been conducted concerning this mosque-turned-building, particularly regarding how it may help the country accomplish its environmental commitments. The Istiqlal mosque received a green building assessment certificate (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiency) from the International Finance Corporation in April 2022. This certificate should serve as a foundation for future research into the distinctive features of mosque building designs in Indonesia and their potential to contribute to accomplishing national environmental targets. Mosque buildings as an embodiment of the concept of Rahmatan Lil Alamin or mercy for all of nature should be in line with the concept of green buildings which strive to preserve nature. This research aims to determine the challenges of implementing the green building concept in mosque buildings with a case study of two mosques in the city of Bandung. To identify their traits, this study employed observational methods, case studies, and interviews with mosque managers. The Minister of Public Works Regulation Number 21 of 2021 about Green Building Performance Assessment will be employed to examine and assess the gathered data. The outcomes demonstrate that the low-performance value persists. Considerable work is required to achieve the desired results. In-depth talks with stakeholders are also required to map the distinctive qualities of mosque structures and identify methods in which they can support the realization of national environmental preservation objectives while also exemplifying the principles of Rahmatan lil Alamin.

Abstract

The case study is a research approach carried out in a natural, holistic, and in-depth setting about a unique, best practice, and bounded phenomenon. Even though it was rooted in social sciences, the case study has characteristics that are almost the same as a process of studying past architectural works (precedent studies) that have long been carried out in architecture. Unfortunately, precedent studies are sometimes only limited to documentation and descriptions of architectural works as physical objects, without critical, in-depth and holistic analysis of the decisions behind the design decisions of a precedent. On the other hand, previous research that discussed the case study approach in architecture tended to understand this approach as just a social research method that was simply applied in architectural research. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the terms of the 'case' itself. This research aims to provide a complete and in-depth understanding of the case study approach, to filter and elaborate this approach for architectural research. This research examines and elaborates on credible and recent literature on case study, both in social and architectural research. Elaboration from the literature review is used to formulate an operational framework based on architectural function-form-meaning. It is hoped that the results of this research will enrich architectural knowledge. The in-depth understanding is ultimately beneficial for improving existing architectural practices and becoming a source of knowledge for the general public.
