Abstract

Technology plays an essential role in people's lives, and gadgets have become a prevalent trend for information and communication. However, excessive gadget use among children can have negative side effects. Children often spend extended periods of time engaged with gadgets, disregarding screen brightness and maintaining a close distance to the screen. Some parents resort to gadgets as a quick way to pacify their children during tantrums. To address the challenges posed by advanced technology, this study aims to observe and interview parents with children aged 5 to 12. According to UC Davis Health in California, blue light, which is emitted by electronic devices, has the shortest wavelength and the highest energy. It can disrupt the production of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep. Exposure to blue light in a dark room, such as when children use electronic devices at night, further disrupts their sleep patterns. To mitigate this, the study will explore the implementation of biophilic natural lighting, which mimics the lighting found in nature. The goal is to create a harmonious and healthier environment that connects children with the natural world, promoting their well-being. By conducting a case study involving workers in biophilic and non-biophilic environments and a dark room is not an ideal choice for playing with gadgets, the study aims to investigate how biophilic natural lighting can reduce the exposure to blue spectrum in dark rooms, particularly for children. The ultimate objective is to determine the impact of biophilic natural lighting on children's sleep quality and propose effective lighting strategies to improve their overall sleep quality. The results of this study will demonstrate the significant improvement in children's sleep quality with the implementation of biophilic natural lighting, providing valuable design guidelines for creating healthier environments for children.

Abstract

Glodok is considered one of the largest Chinese urban areas in Indonesia, featuring shops, dwellings, temples, alleyways, and various other elements of Chinese culture. Several local urban practices can also be identified, including selling and buying, as well as the house-shop relations that are accomplished through the spaces between the buildings or the alleys. The people act as active agents of spatial production in everyday life in this location, supporting their economic, social, and cultural activities. To investigate the interrelationship between Chinese-Indonesian market culture and its influence on interiority, literature studies, and ethnography methods were practiced. The results of the study showed three main aspects affecting the interiority of Glodok, namely the 3-dimensional space of the alleys, the cultural identity, and the activity of the people, as well as experiences. Furthermore, the interiority is manifested in the activity of each individual and experiences within the alley, which exists due to market culture. Through an architectural approach that focuses on accommodating the local tradition, culture, and beliefs, the ambience present in Glodok causes both the people and visitors to unintentionally think about nostalgic experiences and memories, thereby creating an emotional, cultural, and historical engagement.

Abstract

Research in the field of architecture plays a significant role in the advancement of architectural knowledge and encourages architectural professionals to produce better architectural works. Choosing the right research methodology is essential to producing high-quality research. Research methodologies are employed to determine the best scientific strategy for testing hypotheses provided by a particular theory. Thus, selecting the right methodologies has a big impact on how well a research project turns out. However, because there is such an extensive variety of research methods accessible, researchers frequently have trouble deciding which one is best for their objectives. The objective of this study is to investigate the Delphi method, one of the methods that can be applied to architectural research. Experts on a particular topic are surveyed and their opinions are gathered using the Delphi technique. This research will explore several architectural research journals that have utilized the Delphi method, focusing on the methodology section of each study. Through this exploration, the reasons for employing the Delphi method in each research and its procedural implementation will be examined. The findings of this research can serve as a basis for consideration in selecting and appropriately utilizing the Delphi method in architectural research.

Abstract

In the modern era, many traditional houses have changed to functional spaces, as stated in several journals, including the Lamin house in East Kalimantan. The changes in spaces of traditional houses are caused by factors such as modernization, the economy, society, and others. Lamin houses, which have communal spaces with activities, have also shown indications of changes in functions. Therefore, the research purpose is to identify the changes in functions and their contributing factors, as well as to explore the meanings behind these functions. This research utilized a qualitative descriptive method with a phenomenological approach. Data collection techniques involved in-depth interviews and observations. The research findings indicate a shift in the functions of Lamin houses, which has an impact on the meaning of space and the addition of functions, accompanied by the meaning of behavior that maintains cultural aspects and encourages the economic sector. The factor causing the change is that the communal space has increased its tourism function. It is hoped that the results of this research will become the basis for maintaining the sustainability of the Lamin house as local architectural wisdom.

Abstract

One alternative energy source to replace fossil energy is sunlight. The presence of sunlight has an impact on the building in the form of heat radiation and natural lighting. Under certain circumstances, these two effects are contradictory. Buildings need natural lighting to reduce their reliance on artificial lighting, but adding this natural lighting also causes the building to become warmer, which will increase the energy required for air conditioning. One alternative solution to reduce the intensity of heat entering a building is the use of shading devices. The presence of sun shading is believed could be used to prevent heat radiation from entering the building, but the lighting intensity is not at its best. Educational buildings, particularly classrooms, are one type of building that utilizes natural lighting extensively. One of the educational buildings that has attempted to use shading devices. This research aims to determine the perfomance of natural lighting, especially uniformity in classsrooms that used shading devices. The research administers quantitative methods with Dialux Evo software simulation to determine the uniformity ratio of natural lighting in classrooms that use various forms of shading devices The research results reveal that the performance of classrooms with the four types of shading devices still does not meet standards. There is still a need for adjustments to the four types of shading devices so that their performance can meet standards

Abstract

A case study is a research approach that focuses on one or multiple real-life cases as the subject, encompassing both concrete entities such as individuals, groups, or organizations, as well as abstract constructs like processes, networks, or projects. This approach is employed to in-deep investigate complex issues and has been applied in various disciplines, such as; the social sciences, humanities, management, psychology, and architecture. The specific characteristics of a case study involve thorough exploration and analysis, data collection from diverse sources, and identification of key themes within the case. The strength of case studies lies in their ability to combine quantitative and qualitative data, enabling researchers to gain a profound understanding of the processes and outcomes of a phenomenon. This study applies a systematic literature review from several credible scholar articles. Two architectural case study researches are selected as precedents to provide a concrete overview of the characteristics, strengths, weaknesses, and procedural framework of implementing the case study approach. Analysis is conducted by comparing various gathered data to discern the potential for case studies to contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the complexity of issues and the quest for their solutions.

Abstract

The Special Capital Region (DKI) of Jakarta is an area that experiences population growth every year, which raises the number of housing-related needs and reduces the amount of available vacant land for housing. In order to get around the lack of land for housing, a plan for flats—like the West Jatinegara Flats—must be implemented. The spaces in an apartment that are designed by an architect are required to produce a design that takes into account the comfort factor of the space for the occupants or users in addition to aesthetics. Residents feel comfortable if they are at a thermal temperature of between 22.8℃-25.8℃ with humidity of 70%. The study, "Evaluation of Space Comfort based on Occupant Satisfaction in West Jatinegara Flats Residential Units," attempts to ascertain whether or not improving strategies are required to raise space comfort based on occupant satisfaction and whether or not an appropriate level of space comfort is achieved. This study employs the quantitative method, which entails gathering primary and secondary data and conducting interviews with at least 10% of the resident population selected at random. This study's results indicate that improvement strategies are required to improve room comfort. These strategies include organizing each room to make it cozier and more compact, considering the type of opening material, the opening area ratio, and the materials used for the glass and frame to prevent breakage and damage to the windows and handles. Every room in the residential unit needs to have optimal air exchange during strong wind conditions.

Abstract

Selective reuse of heritage buildings should be based on consideration of strategic issues of sustainable development. Research that discusses the reuse of cultural heritage buildings in the field of architecture still does not implement the concept of sustainable architecture. The purpose of the study is to obtain a strategy formulation that can be used as a parameter for adaptive implementation of reuse in cultural heritage buildings in line with sustainable development. The research took a case study of De Tjolomadoe building in Surakarta City, Indonesia. The building is a former sugar factory building currently converted as a meeting place, tourist destination, and educational communal space. The benefits of the research provide recommendations for adaptive reused strategies for cultural heritage buildings with the concept of sustainable architecture to support sustainable development. The study used in-depth observation with interview techniques and secondary data from the literature as the determination of the most important factor of the concept of sustainable architecture in optimizing the management of cultural heritage buildings. The results show that there are four architectural aspects that need to be considered so that adaptive reused cultural heritage buildings can provide sustainable benefits, i.e., the need for integration and synergy between building history, culture, environment.

Abstract

Mapanget District is one of the administrative parts of Manado City which has service functions, namely housing and new settlements, tourism, and trade and services. The Mapanget District is part of the new city planning in the 2015–2019 RPJMN to account for unequal development in the city core. Predicting the development of residential land use is crucial to avoid uncontrollably detrimental effects on suburban communities. To forecast land development over 20 years, from 2022 to 2042, this study will employ spatial analysis based on the Geography Information System-Cellular Automata and weighting analysis using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique to analyze potential deviations in the spatial pattern development of Manado City settlements, particularly Mapanget District. The software used for this research's simulation procedure is LanduseSim 2.3.1, QGIS, and Archmap 10.8. According to the projection results, residential land use will vary during the following 20 years, starting in 1956.75 Ha, or a 201% increase, resulting from the most important driving factor, which is closeness to existing towns. 1106.79 Ha is the possible deviation depending on the direction of the spatial pattern plan for residential structures. It is advised to plan tall buildings, particularly for settlements, as the current residential land in Mapanget District exceeds both the carrying capacity and the land capacity as of 2042, according to the prediction results.
