Abstract

This research concentrates on the architectural process of Dutch architects in the Dutch East Indies, specifically Maclaine Pont, Thomas Karsten, and Wolff Schoemaker. The issue addressed by these three people is how they learned, particularly their reaction to the conditions and wealth of buildings in the Dutch East Indies, and what drove each of their architectures. This study employs a synchronic-diachronic analytic strategy as well as a historical interpretation strategy based on contextual evidence categories. It runs from 1900 to 1940. According to the study's findings, all three encounters through the same learning process, which includes the introduction phase, the exploration phase, and the architectural attitude phase. The architectural perspective was expressed at Maclaine Pont through the design of a tent structure system based on studies of Javanese pavilion roofs, whereas Karsten and Schoemaker referenced modern architecture. Karsten was fascinated by people's daily lives, whereas Schoemaker thought Frank Lloyd Wright's style was the most recent at the time.

Abstract

The advent of computer technology has set off an information explosion that has changed civilization and indeed the entire workforce of today’s world. These changes presage a new context in which architecture schools must function. Traditionally, architectural education is basically between a group of persons; the teacher and the learner(s) in a defined classroom space. This mode of knowledge delivery makes the students to adopt a passive position (based on just listening to the teacher). This prevents the diversity of ideas, promotes repetitive learning and kills creativity. Virtual education on the other hand refers to instruction in a learning environment where teacher and student are separated by time or space, or both. In this knowledge delivery mode, students’ take responsibility of their learning process in an active way. Multimedia tools, electronic media like a discussion forum, chat room, voice mail, and e-mail are employed for communication. The benefits inherent in this type of learning process include sharing of resources and learning environment, promotion of collaborative learning, effective education delivery and educational programme enhancement. In this paper, the concept “virtual architectural education” is considered together with the inherent benefits for the architecture schools and profession.

Abstract

Climate Sensitive Urban Design (CSUD) is a new paradigm in urban planning that is adaptive to climate change by adapting various elements that support the physical development. This study aims to determine the appropriate landscape design adjustment strategy in cultural landscape such as the Old Town Semarang. The data used are in the form of six CSUD components such as air temperature and thermal comfort, vegetation, shadows, materials, solar radiation, and frequency of regional activities. Data processing is carried out by simulating CSUD elements such as shadows, vegetation, and solar radiation using the Sunhour and Curic Sun menus in the Sketchup application. To determine the significant effect between test variables, the SPSS linear regression analysis method was used. The results obtained are several scenarios for the proper application of CSUD at four stations in the Old Town Semarang. The findings are in the form of the influence of the presence of vegetation and shadows of objects in minimizing heat stress. The addition of 1% shadow area can increase the area with moderate to low radiation levels by 1.083%..

Abstract

The latest lighting standard in Indonesia, SNI 7391:2008, emphasizes uniform distribution for road lighting to ensure the safety and accuracy of motorists. However, in urban kampungs, local roads serve as non-commercial public spaces and require lighting that is suitable for human-scale activities. This study examines road lighting in Siwalankerto, Surabaya, and explores how residents' nighttime experiences relate to their perceived adequacy of illumination (PAI). The research involved 26 participants who rated their experiences while using the local road after dark. Nighttime experiences, including pleasantness, willingness to stay, and safety, were compared to illuminance levels and PAI. The findings show a correlation between perceived adequacy of illumination and pleasantness, as well as the willingness to stay in the road space. There was no significant correlation between safety and PAI.

Abstract

Pekarangan ngajeng (Ngajeng yard) is an open area at the front of the residence. Ngajeng yards are formed based on the division of residential land. The formation of the Ngajeng yard is based on tradition. The Ngajeng yard's use is determined by social, religious, traditional, and agricultural factors. The ngajeng yard is still preserved by the Kalang village's Javanese sub-ethnic group, the Kalang. The advantage of the ngajeng yard space as a path for the sun's movement is provided by the Limasap house, where the Kalang people reside, being oriented towards the North and South. Specifically, the objective of the ngajeng yard following the direction of the sun's movement will be covered in this research. The methods used are 1) ethnography, describing traditions related to the Ngajeng yard as well as religious aspects and beliefs of the Kalang people; 2) Analysis of the sun's movement in the East to West trajectory. The orientation of the traditional Limasap omah (house) building influences the existence of the ngajeng yard; 3) The next stage is looking for a belief system through ontology, explanation, prediction, axiology, practice, and epistemology approaches. At this stage, a belief system about the Ngajeng yard is obtained. Thus, it can be concluded that the Ngajeng yard is an open space that has various functions for the Kalang people. These functions are 1) Social function, as a communication, mitigation, and security space; 2) The function of tradition, as a space for the obong tradition to lead ancestors to nirvana; 3) Agricultural function, related to tandur (planting) traditions and harvest traditions. The belief system that is formed is a legacy of tradition related to the implementation of the wong (people) Kalang tradition.

Abstract

This study includes a semiotic analysis of the KAKR Bamboo Hall facade. This is inspired by the architecture and surroundings of the building, which a young vernacular architect created. The first steps in conducting research on buildings are identification studies of the local environment, local culture, and the data utilized in the design process. This study makes use of semiotic theory by Charles Jenks and employs a quantitative research methodology with a descriptive approach. To obtain actual field data, the research began with a direct survey of the research location. A test on semiotics-related architectural theory was conducted using this data. The objective of this study is to provide a foundation or point of reference for the accuracy of the design work that will subsequently be performed on the nearby buildings. This, it is said, is because the village will eventually transform into a historical tourism destination. The findings show that Semiotic trichotomy indicators and Peirce's semiotic theory are compatible. The research's output is a design concept that uses a vernacular building approach in the Buluh Awar area. It does this by emphasizing semiotic trichotomy—the relationship between semiotic concepts and physical structures—in the form of buildings.

Abstract

The term child ‘streetism’ refer to a group of children that has emerged as a result of rapid technological development that led to the migration of people from rural areas to cities. However, due to various other factors that thwart efforts to improve their lives, a class of street children is emerging. This paper examines the children living on the streets in Malaysia. They are subjected to multiple forms of abuse, neglect and often engage in informal economic activities to survive. Children basic needs can be effectively met through empowerment and holistic approaches that utilize art and creativity. Such approaches recognize that children’s well-being is linked to various aspects of their lives, such as physical, emotional and social. Arts and creativity provide street children with a safe space for self-expression, increase self confidence and self-esteem, develop life skills, and create alternative income opportunities. In addition, arts and creativity-based interventions have been shown to promote positive mental health outcomes, improve social inclusion and reduce stigma among street children. This study draws on several perspectives on the issue of child ‘streetism’ in Malaysia. However, the mandatory focus is about analysing the empowerment and holistic approach to children’s ‘streetism’ via art and creativity in education to help children realize their full potential and overcome their obstacles. Interviews, and thematic analysis will be conducted to obtain a collective opinion and gather more information on the research topic. Arts and creativity via education can play an important role in addressing the challenges faced by children living in the streets, by providing opportunities for self-expression, skill development, social inclusion, trauma recovery, advocacy and especially education. Ultimately, by incorporating Kinaesthetic Learning methods via arts and creativity can empower them, promote their well-being and contribute to their holistic development which can be effective strategies to foster the resilience of the street children and help them to build a better future.

Abstract

Nature-inspired cafés have become a trend in modern interior design, promoting quality health and well-being for the customers. To encourage people to bring nature into the built environment, terrariums have taken up the interior space to improve the quality of life. Terrariums are one of the preferred indoor gardening options that only require an individual's creativity, with or without professional knowledge. However, the terrariums approach to interior spaces is still uncommon in Malaysia, and how the terrarium approach enhances people’s eating behaviour remains unexplored. With the emerging trend of Mossarium KL, the concept of terrariums is used as part of the interior design as well as positive factors that enhance people’s eating behaviour. This paper aims to study the terrariums approach in built environments and to review the enhancements of the terrarium on people’s eating behaviour. A case study had been done on the Mossarium KL in Petaling Jaya, Selangor that adapted the concept of a terrarium in the interior space. This study's conceptual framework is based on the idea of employing terrariums as an interior landscape for exploring their potential impact on individual eating habits. This study highlights the importance of incorporating nature-based interventions, such as terrarium cafes within interior spaces and providing valuable insights into people’s eating behaviours in the cafes.
