Abstract

Writing process involves thinking and creative skills. To stimulate the students’ thoughts to express their ideas, clustering technique is effective brainstorming activity to help the students explore their ideas and write consistently. Thus, the objective of this study is to find out whether or not there is any significant difference between the students who were taught in writing descriptive paragraph through Clustering Technique and those who were not. The population of this study was all of the eighth grade students of SMP Srijaya Negara Palembang in academic year 2016/2017. There were three classes that consist of 113 students. The samples of this study were VIII C as a control group and VIII B as an experimental group. This study was conducted by using quasi experimental method with nonequivalent control group design. Then, the data were analyzed by using paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test. The result of independent sample t-test shows that the value of sig. (2-tailed) was 0.00 < 0.05 in the level of significant 0.05. While, the value of t-obtained was 5.213 higher than the critical value of t-table was 1.665 with degree of freedom 76. It can be concluded that the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It means that there was any significant difference between the students who were taught in writing descriptive paragraph through Clustering Technique and those who were not.

Abstract

This study tried to find out the correlation between motivation and English proficiency of EFL learners. The sample consisted of two hundred and six students of the fourth semester of Law Faculty of Sriwijaya University. This study used correlational study. The instruments to collect the data were questionnaire of English learning motivation and TOEFL Test The result showed that: 1) there was no significant correlation between students’ motivation and their English since the significant level (sig. 0.071) was higher than 0.05, 2), students’ motivation did not contribute significantly to their English proficiency, the contribution was only 0.2% because the students had different motivation to join English classes. Theresults of this study can be used by lecturers, learners of English, and other concerned parties to concern more about motivation in relation to English proficiency.

Abstract

This study is aimed at describing the kinds of the English and Indonesian prefixes and suffixes mostly found in the descriptive text of student’s and finding the similarities and dissimilarities. The writer used descriptive qualitative research method. To collect the data, the writer used documentation technique. In analyzing the data the writer used descriptive analysis. After investigating the data, the writer found out four types of English prefix; quantified, locative, temporal, and negation prefixes. English suffixes have four types; nominal, verbal, adjectival, and adverbial suffixes, and five types of Indonesian prefixes; forming verb, forming adjectival, forming noun, forming numeral, and there forming interrogative. The writer also found out thirty two prefixes and suffixes words categorized as English Prefixes and Suffixes, and twenty prefixes and suffixes words categorized as English Prefixes and Suffixes. The writer found out the similarities and dissimilarities. The similarities between English Indonesian prefixes and suffixes in the descriptive text were on prefixes in line with quantity, and suffixes in line with nominal, verbal, and adjectival suffixes. While the dissimilarities were on prefixes and suffixes. In English prefixes, there were no types of prefixes that forming verb, adjective, noun, and interrogative. While in Indonesian prefixes, there were no types of prefixes such as locative, temporal, and negation prefixes. In English suffixes there were no forming numeral and interrogative. In Indonesian There was no adverbial suffix.

Abstract

Listening plays a vital role in daily lives. Everyday people listen for different purposes such as entertainmnet, academic purposes or obtaining necessary information. It is essential for learning languages since they enable to acquire insights and information, and to achieve success in communicating with others. But many students fail to seize them because of some learning difficulties in listening class. Teachers should be aware of students’ learning difficulties. Understanding students’ learning difficulties may enable EFL teachers to help students develop effective learning strategies and ultimately improve their English listening abilities. This paper focuses on how teachers enhance their positive attitude; trainthem to be responsive by giving the suitable strategies that will enable them to develop their listening skills.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the effect of role play performance on accounting students’ speaking achievement at STIE Muhammadiyah Berau.This research is an experimental research which were consist of 20 collegians as sample. They were taught by using role play technique. The test given was in form of oral performance test. The samples were given pretest before treatment and posttest after treatment. The criteria of scoring were fluency, content and pronunciation. To know the effect of the role plays technique on the collegians’ speaking achievement, t-test was used. The result shows that teaching speaking using role play technique gave positive effect to the students’ speaking ability.

Abstract

This paper brings to light, the importance of an approach in learning speaking; a student centered learning approach. The researcher pays so much attention on this approach caused the necessity of students in globalization era that required them to master the English especially in terms of communication. A key issue here is whether what happens in a speaking classroom is concerned with “teaching speaking”. Student-centered learning is focused on the student’s needs, abilities, interests, and learning styles with the teacher as a facilitator of learning. This classroom teaching method acknowledges student voice as central to the learning experience for every learner. The relationship between student-centered approach and the speaking skill is relevant. This approach creates learning by doing situation. The students can develop their speaking skill through the realization of tasks, which are devised along with the students and taking into consideration their needs and characteristics.

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to find out (a) to what extent the English textbooks used by the public senior high schools in Banyuasin matched the requirements of Curriculum 2013, (b) which textbooks met the objectives of TEFL based on Curriculum 2013, (c) what were the teachers’ perceptions of the English textbooks used by the public senior high schools in Banyuasin, (d) what were general qualities found out in the textbooks. Descriptive analytics and quantitative method were used in this research The samples were 22 teachers of English who taught at public senior high schools in Banyuasin. The data were based on (1) documentation, in terms of three English textbooks, (2) three questionnaires were used, a checklist for raters, teachers evaluation, and teachers ideas about general qualities. The results showed that (a) those three textbooks matched the requirement of the 2013 Curriculum, (b) the highest occurrence of the Kemendikbud textbook was 4.33 (good), Bumi Aksara was 3.87 (good), Erlangga was 3.49 (adequate) based on the scale which meant the textbooks met the objectives of TEFL stated in the newest curriculum, (c) teachers’ perceptions of the SMAN English textbooks were positive based on the requirements in the questionnaire of the three textbooks they evaluated, (d) there were some general qualities found out in the textbooks. Then, those three textbooks were recommended to use in the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to find out whether or not there were any significant different scores obtained by the students who were taught through concept-oriented reading instruction (CORI) method and those who were not. A quasi-experimental design, specifically nonequivalent control group design was applied in this study. The result of the study showed that the students’ scores in paired sample t-test of experimental group higher than control group (-11.83 > -12.64), while in independent sample t-test, the critical value 0.05 significance level with df 35 (36-1) was 1.697 and t-obtained 1.992. It means that tobtained was higher than t-table as critical value (1.992 > 1.697). Consequently, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It could be concluded that, teaching reading comprehension of procedure text through Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) method to the tenth grade students of state senior high school 13 Palembang was effective
